Shirley - Evryone Ok?

I am so glad to hear that you folks were spared the brunt of the storm and it's damage. Thank God you are all safe!!! Thank you for taking the time to share.

Let's all remember to continue praying for the folks in Punta Gorda and the other cities that suffered damage and loss of life.

I spoke with a friend today that is the Head of one of the Red Cross disaster shelters in downtown Orlando & what she described that happened & remains was absolutely horrifying. She says that it is far worse than what they show on tv.

Although we were originally scheduled to have Charley hit us head-on & then it made a last minute detour, I find myself often feeling guilty & helpless that I am in a house that never lost power with a yard that saw barely any wind or rain. Not that I'm not thankful that we were spared, but I feel so badly for those who are suffering with loss. When I offered help, my friend said that the best we could do is to give blood & "stay away". She said that people coming to look & well-meaners trying to give un-organized help are making the situation worse. However, I did see a number on tv today to call - IF we're ever able to get through!

Also, she stated that a lot of the media hype about government officials coming to 'observe' & 'offer help' is embelished. She gave several examples of some prominent people offering boxes of supplies in front of the tv cameras which later turned out to be EMPTY boxes & asking if there's "anything we can do to help" & then when they're given verbal lists, they don't write them down & supplies don't arrive. She is a very hard worker & respected volunteer, and is concerned for everyone that remains in need. She is off to Punta Gorda soon, and says that the death toll will be high, as Shirley stated.

Please continue to keep everyone down here in FL in your prayers.

We probably won't have electricity back until Saturday . . . blech. We had some serious property damage, but we are all, thankfully, okay. We atched the news on friday evening, saw that the eye of the storm was going to pass over our town in 5 minutes, and then we lost electricity. Very surreal.

Not everyone has their electricity back, just most of us in Collier County. Most people in Charlotte will be without for another 2 weeks! Lee County will be through the end of the week, hopefully. Isn't losing your electric in this heat unbearable?
