My husband and I would like to ship our bikes down rather than rent for our upcoming trip. Can anyone recommend a reasonible but sturdy shipping crate for them?

Some ups stores will help you, give them a call. Hope this helps. As long as they are under 150 Lbs you can ship them UPS. Maybe the UPS retail stores will build a crate for them.

I have shipped bikes by Fedex Ground in the past but I believe shipping has now got so high that shipping them down and back it would be cheaper to buy new ones at Walmart.

If you have a bike shop near you, you may be able to ask if they have any boxes that you could have. (The ones new bikes come in.) Generally, bikes are partially disassembled to be able to fit in the box. Handlebars, pedals and seat are removed, the boxes are only about 9" or so wide. We have not done it, but have heard of others doing it for flying with your bike. If you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself, the bike shop may help you, then have the bikes shipped to the FW bike barn. I would call ahead to see if they would accept the shipment, and then help you with the reassemly. (And reshipment back home, too.)

Good Luck! and Happy Camping!

We can get boxes from a local dealer. Thought about packing clothes and such around the bike parts. We're comfortable packing and unpacking/reassembling. We normally ship our luggage ahead of time so hope we can pack all around the bikes.

A box from a bicycle store should be the least expensive way to go. Stem and bars come off and bars rotated, seat, pedals and front wheel also get removed. Typically the fork must be spun so it faces backwards.

Years ago DW, DD, DS and I planned on a Fl. tour with WDW as the final destination. We checked in at airport, Newark, and they had me bring the boxes down to the loading ramp into the plane. We flew into Tampa and I assembled the bikes and trailer outside the terminal. Had a crowd gather.

After stay at Vacation Villas, I got new boxes from bicycle store in Orlando and reversed the procedure.

Back then, early 80's, the bikes didn't cost us anything extra to take on the plane.

Considering the costs for shipping both ways it might be more advantageous to rent or buy cheapo when down.
