What can you tell me about the area? There is a possibility that we may be relocating to the area for my DH's employment.

I live about a half hour away from there. It's a college town. Housing seems to be more reasonable than in alot of surrounding areas. It's a fairly small town. It does have a Wal-mart. Don't go there much so that's about all I can tell you. Good luck.:thumbsup2

I too was gonna say about the college and Walmart, I also know nothing else about the town. Hope someone else can help you better.

Th town is pretty quaint. I have two offices there and know a few people who work for me in the town. I'm about 40 min. South in MD, but have been in that area a bunch. It's nice there, pretty quite and with some nice countryside. There's not that much to do in the area, but Hagerstown, Md (where I live) and Harrisburg, PA are pretty close. You're also about 2 hours away from both Washington, DC and Baltimore -- pretty easy daytrips.

I actually went to college at Shippensburg University. As others have mentioned there isn't a whole lot to do there. It is your basic college town with a Walmart, Sheetz, a few bars, etc. Shippensburg is only a few miles from Chambersburg - I often went there to shop or eat. You're only about 30 minutes or so from Harrisburg where there are all types of things to do. You can also get to other larger areas - York, Gettysburg, Baltimore, Hagerstown in a decent amount of time.

I worked in Shippensburg for about 2 years and I have family there. I'm about 30 minutes NE now.

It's a nice little town with not much to do. There is plenty to keep you entertained if you are willing to travel. If your hubby is going to be working in Shippensburg, you could live between Carlisle and Shipp. Lovely and scenic. Lots of farms.

We love South Central Pennsylvania. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

As others have said, there is not much in that specific area (it is pretty rural) and it is a college town. If you lived north of Shippensburg, you would be a lot closer to the Carlisle/Harrisburg area and closer to malls, more things to do, etc. and would still have an easy commute.

Overall, south central PA is a nice place to live! Housing is affordable, the local economy is very stable, public schools are good and we are close to a lot of big cities (Baltimore, DC, NYC, Philly) if you want that big city feel or day trips.

I am not super familiar with Shippensburg itself (I live about 30 minutes North and there is just not much reason to head down there if you don't have family or a job in the area) but if you want more information on the general area feel free to pm me and I will offer any help or advice I can.

Good luck with your decision!

Quick hijack - Hi Mindy! I always see you on these PA threads. Hope all is well.

Hey Jen! We're so close yet so far! LOL

What . . . a ten minute drive due to traffic. We really should plan a DisMeet.

Shippensburg is a great little town for a family. I grew up in Shippensburg and attended the university there for my bachelors and masters. I now live outside of Carlisle, but still go to Ship all the time to visit my family (and for milk shakes from The Treat!!!). There is alot of emphasis on sports for kids, and a ton of programs with that in the area. There has been some definite building in the area recently, a tremendous number of new developments (there are actually a fair number of people commuting from Ship to DC now because of great housing prices, that is what the person is doing that bought our house). The school district is good, and in high school if you are in advanced classes, they even pay for you to take some college classes.

There is a Wal-Mart and a new Lowes, and the downtown is very quaint. There are a fair number of parks for children in the area, and the university just built a performing arts center that has been attracting some decent acts for families and just adults. It is also in a great location to go to Baltimore, DC, Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Hagerstown (only about 35 minutes and also experiencing tremendous growth).

If you have any other questions, let me know.

I don't know much about that immediate area but live just outside of Carlisle (North Middleton Township). Carlisle is not that far away as the others have said. I moved her from Philadelphia 5 years ago and love it. Would never move back.

Just because your DH would be working there , you can think about living in other towns. My DH works in Mechanicsburg. In Phila the commute would take over 1 hour - Here it's 20 minutes - for the same distance!

Carlisle has some good car shows if your interested in that. Antique store are plentiful in the area. Maryland has some outlet stores, as well as Hershey , Gettysburg, and Lancaster (1 hr from Carlisle). Not to mention Hershey Park!

Central PA is a great place to raise kids.
