We have always ordered ours from Disneyland.com, and had them shipped and these are the ones from last year. They resemble a credit card, with the strip on the back, but they aren't hard like a credit card. It kind of feels like a low weight card stock.
Just so you know, if you print your tickets, they are really vouchers that you give to the person at the gate who then gives you the hard cardboard ticket in exchanges. We have done this, very easy.

Yes, you give them at the gate, you don't go to the ticket counter. DH and I have APs but we took our boys for just one day on Jan. 2. We bought tickets from Disneyland online and printed them out. We handed them to the guy at the gate and he gave us two regular tickets. They are not the plastic kind, but the normal cardstock ones. I believe the directions are on the site and on the papers you print.
I recently ordered ours from the Disneyland website. They only took a few days to get here but they weren't hard plastic. They are a lightweight cardboard. One has a picture of Goofy on it , the other Pluto.
