does anyone know if a ship tour is given on the first day? Thanks in advance. Going in 2018 on the Fantasy.

They usually do an intro "these are the main places" kind of thing on day 1. It will be listed in the navigator.

Yes - there is a "Walking Ship Tour" offered usually at least 1-2 x in the early afternoon on embarkation day. it was fun, but not very detailed - they basically took us around to show us where the pools, MDR's, and theatres were on the ship. If it's your first time on Disney, you will find it helpful, but totally not necessary if you don't make it. We were able to find our way around pretty easily after our first day or two.

The first day there is usually a "walking tour" that takes you to key areas. That tour is usually repeated on day 2.

There is also an "art of the theme" (forget the exact title) tour which explains various design elements of the ship. It is for adults only. We found it fascinating and once we discovered it have taken it on each cruise since.

The tours will be advertised in the Navigator. With the Navigator app, you can look them up and see when they will be offered throughout the entire cruise, since each tour occurs more than once.

I like that one too and took it a couple of times on one of my cruses. For one of them they accidentally put the wrong meeting place for the start of it so the tour guide had to do it backwards. There were a few of us that had been on it before (we thought it was going to be a different version of it because it had been done before) so we helped the guide out when they got a bit flustered.

I'll add to the chorus...

As others have said, the walking ship tour on embarkation day is pretty much just an orientation to the ship. Ok for what it is, but it won't be about learning anything, other than where the restaurants are, etc.

The "Art of the Theme Show" tour is a fun look at the design elements of the ship. I enjoyed it and recommend it.

Note that neither tour will take you to any "backstage" areas.
