I'm talking to a friend of mine who is telling me DVC is a "shell" program where it isn't owned by Disney but after I have my contract for a few months they'll ask me to become a member of this shell program?

Anyone know anything or heard of anything like this?

We got our contract in feb. 2014
To date have never been asked to join anything else.
You may get a post card when new DVC resorts open up to entice you to buy more points.

The only thing I can think of is that some companies offer temporary or sampler packages where you pay for one year and can become a full member later with credit for what was paid already.

I think Marriott does that but I'm pretty sure Disney is it's own thing but had to double check.

I'm waiting on my first ROFR and thought I had read everything!

Yeah, Wyndham does that. It's a one-time vacation with a number of restrictions, and then they hit you for the full ride once you try it. A sales presentation is required to get the trial program, and then another sales presentation is required while you are on that one-time vacation.

I've never heard of DVC doing anything along those lines.

DVC is definitely NOT what you're describing, and I don't know of any other timeshares that are either.

DVC is ownership of a specific real estate interest in an actual physical building, for a limited time (30-50 years), represented by points. Very straightforward; no surprises.

I appreciate the responses. I didn't think it was but she was so sure I had doubts!

Thank you again!

Wyndham does, Bluegreen does and I've seen a number of others. I don't think Marriott does in that sense, what Marriott does that I am aware of is to try to sell off specific weeks, ones that are somewhat excess. Disney upgrades certain cash guests, whether they do so with an intent to entice them is unknown.

We've been members for 5 years now and nothing you described sounds remotely familiar. :confused3

If anything DVC is ridiculously addicting (for lots of us) and people add on to their memberships unsolicited.

You can also tell your friend that DVC isn't owned by another company. Disney Vacation Development (DVD) is the timeshare sales division of the Disney company. DVC interests are sold, operated and managed by Disney.

I did. She's just convinced that it's like all other timeshares :)

It is a timeshare -- like all other timeshares. But not all timeshare operations are as sleazy as the worst. There are some systems which are pretty good in all aspects (like DVC and some others), some that are good in some areas and sleazy in others (Wyndham and others), and some that are just plain sleazy (Westgate and others).

If your friend thinks all timeshares are all the same, she shouldn't buy one.
