With the exception of buffets and family style meals, is it acceptable to split TS meals, or is this frowned upon?

Yes, it's fine. (You also can't split at dinner shows, CRT or Akershus)

Can you even do this on the Dining plan? We are taking the kids in August. They will most likely ditch us most of the time. DH and I though we could share a meal at 3 or 4 of the sits downs and make extra lunch or late evenings and share another meal. Since it was DS's bday he chose some very normal places and DH and I would love to try some that we have never been to like Sanaa. This would be great if we could do it.

Since it sounds like you have older teens, you can also take some of their cridits and let them have a night in the parks with counter service dining and you and DH take the TS credits.

The restaurant at the boardwalk gave us a terrible time about sharing on the dining plan. Actually it wasn't even sharing I didn't want a full dinner just a $5 soup that I wanted to pay OOP. The said I had to use a dining credit on the soup. Crazy. I told the server that my family would not eat there if that was the case. He was shocked we would leave so let me buy the soup. I don't remember the name it was some brewery resturant at the Boardwalk.

Hmm...thats really odd. They can't make you use your dining credit if you want to pay OOP. I would have complained.

That would be Big River Grill. This is not a Disney restaurant and could possibly have its own rules about the dining plan that aren't like those at Disney restaurants. Most restaurants where persons reported not being able to share were non-Disney restaurants.
