We just got back last week and I thought I would share the tips I am glad I a listened to:

1. We had water shipped from Cosco. This was the best tip of all. It was only $8. I ordered it on a Monday and it was there when we got there on Friday. It was great knowing we had the water available.

2. Ponchos. I brought 2 cheap $1 store ponchos for everyone. I was glad I had them. I also think the lady that was carrying an infant in the pooring rain tryint to get out Fantasmic was also glad I had a spare since I gave her one.

3. The over the door shoe holder. There would have been no other good way to store all of our tiny supplies. We had 5 people in a room at POR. The only thing was that the hooks didn't fit over the bathroom door. I had to put it on the clothes rod. If you can find one that goes on a closet rod get one of those. It worked just as well though.

4. Having all my laundry supplies ready to go. I had a bag w/ my quarters, dry degerent, and dryer sheets. While my family slept in after an EMH I just grabbed our laundry and went. I didn't use a laundry bag to keep our dirty laundry in though. I just threw everything into an empty suitcase as it begame dirty. I was then able to wheel it to the laundry room.

5. Photopass share. Thank you to the DISer that came up with the Aug photopass share. I can't wait for my pictures. I would have never spent $100 for it but I am glad I was able to get the pictures.

6. Arriving at the parks early, taking a break and then going back. This was the best tip of all. On all but 2 of our 7 days of going to the parks we got there at opening. The lines were short and we were able to go on many rides. My kids were able to ride EE 7 times thanks to getting there early, getting a FP and use of child swap. I also knew that our only hope of riding TSM was to get to HS at opening. I had originally planned our HS as a sleep in day. I must say that while I liked the ride. It wasn't worth all the effort it took to be able to ride it. People were in a 2 hr line when we used our FP. Those people are crazy!

Some of the things I did that I wish I didn't:

1. Stay at a moderate resort so we could use the nicer pool and the ferry to DTD. We only went to the pool with the water slide once. I kept asking my kids if they wanted to go the pool with the slide and they said they liked the quiet pool better. :confused3 We only took the ferry to DTD once. It rained on our way back so we had to take the bus. We really could have used the extra space at the family suites at All Stars even though I think it would have cost us $300 more.

2. Getting the DDP. I have mixed feelings on this. I am glad we did it at least once. I am not sure that I would do it again. I would really have to crunch some numbers before making that decision. It doesn't sound like a lot of food but it is. We ended up with 4 unused CS credits. On our last couple of days were were strongly encouraging our kids to get snacks. It was nice that we were able to do that though. Normally we are always telling them no. We also ended up throwing away a lot of the CS desserts. I think it is sinful when there are starving people in this world that we throw out perfectly good food. By the way, I brought breakfast food so we ate breakfast in our room. I brought way too much of that too. We aren't big breakfast eaters anyway.

3. Bringing the single serving kool aid was more trouble that it was worth. DD7 tried making her own and would spill the powder. What a mess. :sad2: While my kids like kool aid and liked having it. They were getting plenty of sugar in other things. They really needed just plain water.

4. Carrying misting fans. I think I only used the misting fan a couple of times. Everyone says how miserable Aug is. Yes there were some hot moments but there would have been hot moments in the midwest too. Most of the rides are indoors. If they aren't there are plenty of fans in the line to keep you cool. The only line that looked absolutly miserable was BTMRR. They do have you in that line like a bunch of hot, rotting sardines. Fortunately, I had a FP. :thumbsup2

5. Autograph books. I don't think if I had mentioned them to my kids they would have known or cared about them. I spent hours downloading clip art and printing cards. I did print someone's passport pages from the Creative DISigns thread. Those were nice. They did have some cool autograph books at the gift stores that on one page there was room for a signature and on the other page there was a place to insert a picture. They were $10. I would have spent the $10 on one of those as I think it would have been a nice keepsake. There would have been no fumbling around for the autograph page then.

That is it for now. If I think of anything else I will add it. Overall we had an absolutely wonderful trip. Possibly the best vacation I ever had. I hope to go back to WDW again. Right now it looks like that won't be until 2010. :sad1:

All the acronyms/abbreviations are sometimes hard to figure out...LOL
What is BTMRR and TSM??
Thanks for the tips though. Never thought about shipping water! How does that work?

TSM is toy story mania, a new attraction :goodvibes.............
BTMRR is Big Thunder Mtn Railroad, a rollercoaster near Splash Mtn in Magic Kingdom

Thanks, I enjoyed reading your post.
I have used almost all the tips you did, thanks to these boards.
I completely agree about the shoe holder for holding bathroom stuff..it works out great because I like to keep my stuff organized.
We are staying at POR here in a few weeks too, and I'll be hanging mine in the closet area, near the double sinks.

OH, about TSM..I am nervous about this ride. The first thing my party will want to do is head straight for ToT and R&R..so I hope the lines for TSM aren't too bad by the time we make it down there.

Thanks again!

If you have any hope of riding TSM get a FP first thing. They were gone by 11 am and the line was 2 hrs. I would discuss this with your group and let them decide if they want to ride it or not. It isn't worth the wait that is for sure but a good ride none the less.

How funny... we were there from 8/13-8/19 and the misters were our BEST thing!!!

We got the misty-mates at BJs @ 3/$15. They're the size of an electric toothbrush, so they were small and light. I normally put 2-3 into my bag (in a ziplock bag, just in case) and one into the stroller. They made a HUGE difference, particularly at AK and at the Stunt show at DHS. My sister got us some bigger ones which never left the room (don't tell her!)-- they were just too cumbersome to be practical.

The last on-site trip I brought all kinds of DISer decorations for the door and window. Our room ended up being on the very end of the first floor wing at POP; beautiful quiet spot with a lake view; but NO ONE walked by our door and wondow except the maids. Wasted time and valuable luggage space.

Whe I got to our room at POP I realized that the sink area was going to be a mess with all our stuff so I just popped the ironing board up to the same height as the sink and put it adjacent, along the wall under the clothing rack (which we didn't use). Each person had a space for their toiletry bag and it was totally off the sink counter which made me happy.

We got refillable mugs and got our money's worth out of them by the morning of the second day. When we got home we sold them on eBay.

I quickly realized that wearing a lanyard for water, a pin lanyard, and a cord around my neck for the ticket holder was just too much. I bought a ticket holder that clipped on to the pin lanyard and that made life a little easier.

Bought a water-tight container for money and tickets at the POP gift shop before we went to Typhoon Lagoon. What a lifesaver! I tucked it down inside my racer style swimsuit when we went on any raft rides.

Other great money-savers - joining a photopass group and joining a refrigerator and coffee pot swap, althought it was a hassle for the folks at the hotel to locate the box, and then another hassle to relabel it and return it very early in the morning the day we left.

I brought water with us in the suitcases and did not even use all of it. I found that it was easier to ask for ice water throughout the park rather than lug a water bottle around with me all day.

I wore my Holey Soles (Canadian version of Crocs, and designed to fit a narrower foot) and my feet couldn't have been happier.

Followed a tip on this board and tried the Norweigan Bread at Epcot. It was awesome!

One of the first (and best) tips was to schedule the earliest possible breakfast with Cinderella. On our very first trip almost 10 years ago my husband grudgingly agreed to one day at the Magic Kingdom since we were vacationing in the area and that is when I really started using this board. I wanted to make the most out of our day. We got there extra early and I literally drug my husband and then 7-year-old son to the Castle. Our daughter was 4. The breakfast was amazing and totally changed my husband's mood. Cinderella kissed my son's cheek and he didn't want to wash the lipstick off all day! I think just seeing our kids interact with the characters melted my husband's heart a little. I followed all the touring advice given back then about which rides to do first, how to avoid lines, where to go when it was hot and you need a cool break and our day ended up being perfect. We stayed for the fireworks and walking to the car my husband admitted that it was THE BEST vacation day we had ever spent. The next year he agreed to go again and stay on site at the Poly and then the Beach Club.

Re: BTMRR- "They have you in that line like a bunch of hot, rotting sardines."
Funniest and most accuate description ever!!:rotfl2:

Toy Story Mania is the coolest ride, my favorite. At rope drop we went straight to Rockin Rollercoaster and got a fast pass then straight to TSM. Had a 65 minute wait even that early. When we got off we got in the single rider line and rode again within 15 minutes. We did the single rider later in the day too and only waited 20 minutes. But, the inside is decorated to the hilt so everyone should go through the long line once. It is great just looking around.

The shoe bag over the door is Wonderful. We were there the first week of August and we used the small mister fans and enjoyed them. The had a clip so you could hook them on your belt look and they were quite small and worked great. My other favorite is to pack a fan. We always take a small fan for our room. It is just the right amount of noise so you can't hear the halls or the outside or the AC shutting off and on.

The kids I took both had mister fans, and by the 2nd day, they didn't want to carry them..oh well...I didn't either...however, we really didn't need them....

The best tip I used this trip was to head straight to TSM for a fast pass at rope drop then hit the ToT and ROckin Rollercoaster. This worked well for us. The ToT line was only 10 minutes. The Coaster line was longer by the time we got there, because we had to baby swap ToT, but my DH used the single rider line, and then I used the single rider line later on in the day.

TSM fast passes were gone by 10:30 and the stand by line was 180 minutes during the middle of the afternoon. We waited about 10 minutes with our FP.

Glad I listened to/brought:
--bring some sort of "basket" for the narrow shelf in the POR bathroom. I brought one of those mesh CD/DVD baskets and it held my stuff in a neat, organized manner. I was able to fit a small suitcase in between the sinks, and throw the hairdryer and some other things in there to keep it off of the sinks.

--toothbrush holder
--Tour Guide Mike
--Over the counter medications -- we needed several and it was nice to have stuff on hand
--Organizing Pennies/Quarters in the M&M containers for the pressed penny machine
--Hot cocoa. I would make this a night in the coffee maker and the kids loved the treat.

What we didn't use as much:
--Since we went in January, I ordered way too much bottled water. We ended up with leftovers that we just had to leave. Oh well!

What I wish I had taken:
--a small screwdriver. Two different things we purchased for the kids were screwed in the box or had battery covers screwed on. It was a major bummer for them to get something and not be able to play with it.

I'm sure I will think of more later!

I always packed extra water but for my upcoming trip (in October) I am using the DDP and I expect that between the CS beverage and snack credits I'll have plenty of liquid.
Do you think that's right?

Most definitely you will have more than enough liquid..don't forget to ask for cups of ice at CS. I even was asked did I want a small or large cupful...we had beverages left over...

oh wow this is also a great thread!!!

Hi everyone. I'm new to this side of the boards. I've never been to WDW and I hope to start planning for a trip in 2010. I already have trips planned for DL this Christmas and October 09, and I've done Dl plenty of times. But I'm completely overwhelmed with WDW info. Is there another thread I should be reading to get the basics?

Moleskin! I could not have survived the week without it. I had a bad callus on the bottom of my foot and after just a few hours at WDW, it was awful. I had never used moleskin before, but decided it couldn't hurt. It took all of the pressure off of the callus and kept me going all week.

Getting to the parks early is probably the #1 tip. Made all of the difference in how much we rode.

I ordered water and had it shipped. That was okay. I took way too many snacks and ended up leaving them when we left. With the dining plan, we ended up with snack credits left and had lots to bring home from that.

Keep ponchos with you at all times! You never know when you will need them.

Keep reading these boards. Yes, I took way too much stuff, but I like to be prepared!

We went in December 2007 and here are my tips that made our trip:

1. Tour Guide Mike. Hands down worth the $20.
2. ROPE DROP! Every day. No exceptions, no matter how tired we were initially, we were glad by the end of our day that we did it.
3. Disney Dining Plan. It worked for us. It was totally worth the $ spent. This was when they included the tip and appetizer. Now I don't know whether or not we'd do it with the changes they've made.
4. The time I spent on these boards totally made the difference. All the research came to fruition from the moment we got there to when we left.
5. Chef Mickey's on our night of arrival. We had the 1st dinner ressie and I couldn't have planned a better kick off to our vacation especially after our rocky start on the way down (read more if you're interested in my siggy vac. blog, the drama is spelled out at the end of the blog)

Done without:
1. Early bfast ressies after the late night at MVMCP. Bad move. Best bfast but we were EXHAUSED.

It looks like things are different for everyone but here is ours:

Absolute Must
1. Be at the parks at rope drop!!!
2. Bring a bottle of water from your fridge at the resort.
3. Have a plan!!!!! (Touring plans was best for us)
4. Plan breakfast daily. Biggest meal of the day gets you off right. DH is diabetic so we had 7:30 ressies daily then were at rope drop daily. I'm not a morning person but it was great! If you can do a later breakfast, get 10 or 10:30 ressies and you'll probably have 2 meals a day and a snack.
5. Over the door organizer for bathroom stuff really cuts down on clutter at the vanity.
6. Comfortable shoes, like good tennis shoes. Don't take new ones. You'll average over 7 miles a day.
7. Take tons of pictures. I took a little over 550 then weeded it down to about 150 when we got home. So glad I did. Visit the photography board on this site for some great ideas.
8. Carry 1 small backpack or cross the chest sling bag. We carry tickets, camera, sunscreen, gum, snacks and cash.
9. Go to Chef Mickey's for one meal regardless of your child's age. It is still our favorite place and our kids are grown and 10 year old GS still loves it.
10. Read this list. Invaluable information!!

Shouldn't have done:
1. Unless you are staying in a resort with a kitchen don't do grocery delivery. Since the minimum is $50.00 we bought more than we used and left it there for housekeeping when our trip was over. You can ship water for free through Coscto and then pack your snacks.
2. Take ponchos with you everywhere. We just ducked in somewhere and waited it out. All the dollar ponchos we took never got used.
