DH and I are taking our 10 yo granddaughter and my mother (73:rolleyes1.) to WDW in October. They are on a package without the DDP because my mother cannot eat that much food and DGD can't even get through a salad so we are better off for her to choose her food from the kids menu and pay oop. DH and I are up for the challange, our package includes the dining. To make things interesting I'm a diabetic so unless Angel food cake in on the dessert menu, I won't be eating them. Can I let Mom and Haley share my dessert and maybe even the appetizer? I do not want to get my hand slapped during dinner. They will get my snack credit but I did't think that would be much of a problem as long and I "pay" for them myself.

Rest assured that Disney does not care what you do with the food once you get it. Well, except for the waitresses at 50s PT. ;) As long as you are redeeming credits that belong to you (which you will be, according to your post), once you get the food in exchange for those credits you can eat it/save it/trade it/give it away/throw it away to your heart's content.

DH and I were having a meal with friends at Le Cellier. We were on the dining plan and they weren't. I asked if I could give my appetizer to my friend and the waitress said "sure".

It probably would be nice to ask beforehand, but it appears it's not a problem.

WARNING: This is NOT a criticism, it's merely information!!!!

The actual, written policy is 'no sharing with people not on the dining plan'. This is generally considered to mean that you (not YOU you, but anybody on the DDP) cannot use their credits to buy food for non-DDPers.

As stated above, once you have your food it's unlikely any Cast Member is going to care who eats what* BUT!!! There have been occasional reports of a restaurant or two sticking to the exact wording of the terms and conditions of the DDP, and not allowing sharing period. It's likely NOT going to happen to you, but be prepared in case it does.

Also, if you let the restaurants know ahead of time that you have dietary restrictions, they will VERY likely be able to provide an alternative (aka one you can eat) dessert.

*Of course, if there are four of you and you only order two meals, period, it's considerate to tip 'extra', or in the case of the DDP, to tip above what the plan covers.

I'm sure you've heard the old saying, "sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission." Sharing items of food (i.e., parts of a meal) that you've legitimately ordered with your own credits on the DDP with someone not on the DDP is IMHO one of those situations. WDW would be a most unmagical place if you could not do whatever you wanted with your actual food once you got it within the terms of the plan. In fact, one could make a sound legal argument that once the food is delivered to you in exchange for your credit, you have the right to give it to anyone you wish, even someone (gasp!) not on the DDP. And yet, as kaytieeldr has pointed out, Disney's quasi-official* stance is "no sharing between DDP'ers and non-DDP'ers," and since whomever at Disney you ask a question about "sharing" (be it a restaurant CM, dining CM, Guest Communications CM or Guest Services CM) is unlikely to be a lawyer, you may get the stock "no sharing" response even if all you want to do is let your granddaughter eat your dessert, which I am 100% positive would never be an issue if you didn't ask about it in advance. So, OP, just do what you planned, don't unnecessarily complicate things by asking in advance, and in the EXTREMELY unlikely event that a CM takes it upon him/herself to question why your granddaughter is eating your dessert, politely ask forgiveness.

* I say quasi-official because the official language actually says nothing about sharing items of food, it's actually about sharing entire meals, or in other words, what you are entitled to get in exchange for credits. The official quote from the DDP brochure is:

Q: Can I use my Disney Dining Plan to redeem meals for friends or family members who are not included in my reservation and have not purchased a Magic Your Way Package Plus Dining?

A: Sorry, you may not use your Disney Dining Plan to redeem meals for friends or family members who are not included in your reservation and have not purchased a Magic Your Way Package Plus Dining.
[Emphases added.]

I feel 100% confident in saying that what Disney is really concerned with, and what the quoted language is meant to address, is the proverbial situation where there are 4 people at a table, 2 who are on the DDP and 2 who are not, and the 2 DDP'ers try to use 4 credits to pay for everyone's meals. That's why there is software in place that prevents the redemption of more adult/kid credits at one time than there are adults/kids on the room reservation. But I do not think it is an actual violation of any official DDP term or condition to share bites of or even give an item of food away once you've gotten it legitimately with a DDP credit.

Thank you all for your help and thoughts. I do want to point out that DM and DGD will be ordering a meal from the menu. I am not necessarily supplimenting their meals, I just don't want to waste it. Trust me, I could eat it all from beginning to end but when you have to actually check your blood 4 times a day, it's going to tell you the truth. Ugh.

Thank you Kaytieeldr for suggesting an alternative dessert. There could be some sugarfree cheesecake sitting around in the kitchen.

Actually, Disney IS concerned about people sharing any of their food with people not participating in the DDP. It's not permitted, and never has been. The fact that many have gotten away with it (including me) does not make it an acceptable practice as far as Disney is concerned.

As a matter of fact, a few months ago they announced a "no sharing of anything on DDP, period" policy to counter that. Fortunately, somebody with brains realized what an enforcement nightmare that would be and they backed off. However, you will see it enforced at some restaurants, by some CMs and some managers, on occasion.

Some of the comments here are reminiscent of the comments we heard about using kids credits to purchase adult meals -- basically saying, "Hey, if they don't STOP me, I'm going to do it because I want to." That is exactly the attitude that got the kids and adult credits separated, and got CMs threatened with termination if they violated the policy.

It's not hard to predict that if enough people share food items with people not on DDP, the Mouse will eventually step in and say, "Okay, no sharing period." When that happens, sharing strategies which are perfectly legitimate now will be no longer cool, and DDP participants will not be able to share among themselves to save credits for Signature Dining...just as one example.

Frankly, I wish they'd just institute a "sharing charge" of $5 per shared plate and be done with it. Then people who wanted to share an item could, and the CMs would be on solid ground to tell people no if they didn't want to go about it the permitted way.

nanalisa, have you checked out the disABILITIES board? It is a great board and an aawesome community. If you have questions on touring with diabeties they are the folks that can really help you.

Have fun planning.

I believe the OP questions on sharing have been completely answered at this point.
