Sharing Meals on the Dining Plan

But can you do this in the Dining Plan? I have in the past ordered my meal and an appetizer for my son. Because he says he is not hungry or I simply can't eat the whole meal they give me! It is to much some times! They have never said anything and I pay cash for his appetizer and milk with the meal. It often ends up the same prices as a kids meals so honestly I am not sure it is worth doing that even. But I am at least not wasting food and I will use his meal another day for a breakfast TS for him at the resort or something.

I believe it would only cause a problem if you were on the dining plan. From what I understand it is a huge no no when on the plan.

Really? I got the impression from trip reports that it was okay. We were planning to do this a couple times. Is there a policy against it?

It's my understanding that it's not OK on the DP, but it is okay if you're paying OOP.

I believe that on the disney dining plan thread it says that you may not share food and is is not allowed at all. We will be eating ts meals mostly at buffet where everyone would have to pay anyway but if you are not having buffet then it is not supposed to be allowed to split with ddp.

As stated sharing on the DDP is NOT permitted. If you are paying OOP it is perfectly fine.

However, not everyone at the table must use DDP credits. So, for example, 3 people dining....1 person is using DDP credits and the other 2 are paying OOP......the 2 that are paying OOP may share a meal. Just remember to tip fairly. Take into consideration that the server would get a better tip for serving 3 entrees. I somehow doubt that 2 people sharing an entree makes for an less work for that server.

I realize that the OP was talking about sharing meals that are paid OOP. But because we were discussing sharing meals with the DDP, I thought I'd post this in case anyone else wondered.

It's from the tread on the dining plan.

Can I share meals with other guests on the Dining Plan staying on the same hotel reservation?
There is no clear answer to this. Consistently, guests seem to be allowed to share the meals ordered on the Dining Plan amongst the guests at their table, with the exception of fixed price meals, such as buffets or other all-you-can-eat options. However, this question has been asked directly to Disney via email, by a number of guests, and consistently, they have answered this question by saying specifically that, "sharing is not permitted." Despite several attempts to get clarification about that statement, no clarification appears to be forthcoming from Guest Communications, and nothing official has been released by Disney Dining to resolve the confusion. Ask your server.

During our January trip, we were on DDP and we did share meals. I shared with my 4 year old if we weren't at a buffet. Specifically, I shared with him at Les Chef du France and Le Cellier. Extra plates were brought to him and it wasn't a problem.

Good to know. I'm a very small person, so I almost never finish a meal and DD3 is very petite also. I'm sure we could share a meal and still have some food left over.

It seems that it would be okay to share the meal-even if you're on the DDP-as long as the server still charged each person with their own TS credit. (Basically "wasting a TS credit.) Does that make sense?

I moved the posts regarding shairng on the DDP out of the regular restaurant board into a separate thread on the DDP board. I think that it'll be more clear for everyone wondering about sharing if the two issues are separated and Neverbeen2DW gets her answer from the DDP forum.

If youre both on the ddp you can order one meal and split it. You can NOT split a meal if youre on ddp and the other person is not.

Tricia thanks, but honestly it is not a big deal to me. I have done it several times already and nobody has questioned me. My son (6) and I both always have the dining plan and some days he is just not real hungry. On those days I order an appetizer (not on the DDP), I order an entree on the DDP and I order him a milk. I pay OOP for the milke and appetizer. It has never been an issue. We do end up with an extra meal but we use it at some point. Often times when we both order and entree on the DDP and I end up eating his and he eats mine so it works out in the long run. The children's meals are actually the perfect size for me and they almost always offer fish of the day which is always Salmon. I love Salmon so it is win, win! I just wondered if anyone has been told by a CM when they order they can not do that. I really do not want to hear what a DIS'er thinks of what I am doing. I want to know IF anyone has ever been repremanded for doing it.

We have shared TS meals (using 1 credit for 2 people on the DDP) many times, and have never had a problem. We've done this at Coral Reef, Le Cellier, Rose & Crown, San Angel Inn, and Tony's. I've heard of others doing it at other places. It wouldn't make sense to make people order an extra entree only to throw most of it away. If they want to charge a small fee for an extra plate, fine. But so far they're not even doing that.
