As we plan our next vacation, we are considering RCI.

Have you stayed at an RCI resort? If so, where & what did you think?

I would approach things a bit differently. RCI has more than 3,000 affiliated resorts, so "Has anyone ever stayed at an RCI resort?" is such a vague question that I can only answer, "Yes..."

Instead of asking for experiences of others, I'd ask myself, "What kind of vacation would my family LOVE?"

And then, I would consider where you want to go on that vacation...then check to see if DVC/RCI offers a resort there...and then see if anyone on the DIS has stayed there.

If you strike out here, check other resources such at TUG (or many others) to get actual reviews of the resort you might be interested in.

I would also recognize that there are other options for doing non-DVC vacations using DVC points.

For example, any resort you find on RCI (DVC-accessible or not) is a timeshare. At every single one of those 3,000+ timeshares, there is some owner looking to rent a reservation -- and they are almost certainly offer the least expensive path to that resort...BY FAR.

You just have to find them. The three most likely places to look are 1) eBay, 2) TUG, and 3) Redweek, but there are many other marketplaces.

So...you rent those points you're not going to use for a DVC vacation -- and then you use that cash to rent a reservation at your preferred destination.

That's another option, and very viable.

We've stayed at many RCI and II resorts. Asking what you think about RCI resorts is akin to asking what you think about hotels in Orlando with no more limitations. Motel 6 is different than the Ritz. That said, only a small subset of RCI resorts are a reasonable exchange using RCI. Remember that once you exchange, your DVC points are gone. IF you are thinking of using RCI for an exchange through DVC, I'd suggest you decide the locations and times you want to go, investigate resorts and put in a request first at least 10-12 months out, preferably even further out. As noted, there are other alternatives including renting out your points, a private exchange or using one of the independent exchange companies.

We are avid timeshare exchangers. If I were you, I'd rent out the DVC points and then just book a timeshare via redweek or Ebay. It will work out in your favor IMHO. All that said, we prefer Interval over RCI for everything but trading INTO DVC and HGVC (Hilton). We are big Marriott fans though and Interval has Marriott.

We just returned from a trip to the Suites at Attitash Mountain in Bartlet, NH. Since you're from New England this could be a no fly vacation. We've been twice now and find there is a lot to do with 8, 11 year olds. Huge one bd units!
