Way back in 1994, my son met a young woman, Lorie C., at college, in Texas. He was crazy about her and the first time I met her, I was crazy about her too. As time passed, I became convinced that this young woman was "the one". They were together for two years. Then in 1996 she decided that college was not for her and she moved back to Houston to attend the Culinary Institute there and become a chef. Travis missed her bunches and when some friends of theirs got married, he got this bright idea that he could get her to come back to Nacogdoches and be with him if they got married. Well, when he broached the subject with her (she was only 20 and he was 21) she panicked and broke off with him a few months later. He was heart broken, I was heartbroken, dh was heart broken
Fast forward to 2003. Travis was in Michigan in August to attend his 10th high school reunion. He signed up with Classmates.com to get the info about the reunion and he had a ball at the festivities. He went back to Houston and about two weeks later got an email forwarded to him from Classmates.com. The email said, simply:
Are you Travis W.W. Johnson? It was signed Lorie C.
He answered her back with:
Yes, I am. How are you and where are you?
Turns out her apartment is about 10 minutes away from his apartment. They got together right away and apparently Lorie had been looking for him for two years. She said she didn't want to call me and ask because she was worried I would be angry with her for breaking up with him. She remembered the year he graduated from high school, remembered the name of his highschool and found him through Classmates.com. She told him she had never stopped loving him but and felt frightened and not ready for marriage 7 years earlier.
On December 6 of this year. Travis and Lorie went to San Antonio. They had a lovely suite at La Mansion Del Rio, right on the riverwalk, with a nice private balcony.
On December 7th, I was at a DIS meet at OKW (thanks again for hosting this Danny and Belinda), surrounded by DIS pals, when my cell phone rang. It was Travis. He told me that he had asked Lorie to marry him, right there on that private balcony and given her an engagement ring. Lorie said YES.
So, there I was surrounded by fellow DISers, standing in the sunshine and jumping up and down screaming with joy. No, really...I literally was jumping up and down. Ask Dan Murphy, he was there.
I was right all along. Lorie is "the one". Travis is so happy again. After he and Lorie broke up so many years ago there was a spark missing. He accepted that Lorie was out of his life forever and went on living but the "spark" was missing.
Since Lorie has been back in his life the spark is back in his voice. He is so happy now.
So am I
They plan to marry in July, 2004. I sure hope her biological clock is ticking very loudly
