Thinking about doing this...

what is the good & the bad...

How well do they hold up? With regular nail polish, the nail polish chips by the evening, worried about going on vacation and not being able to take off the shelac and having a huge chip in the color.

Mine last 2-3 weeks. By the end if the 2nd week, it usually ends up with a small chip on some nails but not bad at all.

Most people can get 2 weeks out of them. I am a nurse and I can only get one week before I break em. It is hard to get off. You have to soak in acetone. Some salons use that drill file thing to get it off, I don't let them do that because it ruins your nail. But it is painfully slow to get it off. And it is expensive, lit costs like 30 bucks around here for a shellac manicure. It is very strong and if you can maintain it, they look great. My sister can get hers to last 3 weeks.

I once made the mistake of getting shellac on my toes. It looked great for the first few weeks. Then my toe nails were getting long and it was impossible to cut. It was really hard to get off. It took a lot of effort of soaking in acetone and filing. I don't recommend growing polished toe talons. Eek!

I once got the shellac to last two weeks when I was on vacation, but I wash my hands and use purell too much at work to make em last. My workplace allowed the shellac/gel polish only and once it is chipped it has to be taken off.

I love doing the shellac. They last about 2-3 weeks and my nails always stay nice and long.

I usually get them done for special events- weddings, vacation, etc. I'd like to get them done more frequently but can't justify spending the money and I'm a little wary about the UV health implications.

My daughter got shellac for our cruise. It will chip with the combination of saltwater and sunscreen.

What exactly is shellac? I thought it was just a polish they put over your nails.

I was one that a regular manicure was chipped by day 2! Ive been doing the shellac manicure for almost 2 years. I always have it on. Mine last about 10 days, not because it chips, but because my nails grow really fast.

I've worn it through vacations, beach, pools, everyday, and its amazeballs. I've done shellac and OPI. I prefer Shellac but use OPI when the shellac colors won't cut it. Like everything, its all in the application. Too many salons are doing it and not doing it right. If its chipping or peeling before 10 days, its not on right. Some techs just lay it on too thick.

A couple of things, if a nail salon is using a drill, run fast! They aren't trained properly and aren't doing it right. The correct way will have your nails wrapped, with an acetone-soaked cotton ball and aluminum foil or with special shellac made "nail booties" (as I call them). You let them sit for about 10 minutes and then the polish should get scraped off with an orange stick.

The only thing I recommend is to apply cuticle oil to your cuticles every night. This keeps them conditioned and helps not dry out your nail.

I love shellac and do not mind the cost as one costs basically the same as 2 regular and wears much better. My nails have never been stronger and never looked better.

Its a hybrid nail polish that has gel "mixed" in it. Its applied with special base and top coat, each coat is then "cured" under an ultraviolet light.

has anyone done this with a french polish or just color polish?

I've done the french with the shellac or gel polish. It lasted a couple of week. It is basically the gel solution (not acrylic) they use for tips without the tips. When I had mine done they didn't file down my nail bed at all. I took them off at home my soaking and filing with an emery board. Took one whole evening but my nail bed was not damaged at all.

Thanks, I am thinking of doing this for my Sept trip, but I don't know anyone who has done it.

I've been getting shellac for 2 years now. I haven't looked back. They are the best . Mine last for about 2 weeks although i have stretched it to 3 and they require acetone to take the polish off, but mine dosen' chip that often .

They are my biweekly splurge and i wouldn't change that even if i do spend 30.00 for them.

I get a shellac French manicure a few times a year. It lasts about 2 weeks.

As PPs have said, do not let a salon take a drill to your nails to remove the shellac, also don't let the operator file the surface of your nails--it really weakens them.

If you can't find a salon that will remove the shellac properly, you can remove it at home with 100% acetone, or--if you can't find pure acetone, wait for the shellac to bubble up close to your cuticle, and working from the bubble, gently peel the shellac off with your fingernails. The shellac should come off in large strips. Sounds icky, but it works, and it does not ruin your nails.

The first time I had it taken off the nail tech picked up the drill and I kind of panicked thinking she was going to drill it off. All she did was drill into the top of it so the acetone could soak in better. I have had color and french and loved both.

I agree about the proper removal. I've had a few salons try to stick my nails into a bowl of acetone--this was very, very drying to my nails and I make sure to ONLY go to salons that take the time to do the acetone on a cotton ball removal. It comes off very easily that way.

Also agree on the cuticle oil!

My sole complaint about Shellac is when oh when are they going to come out with more colors??! I've done all the colors I like, I've even layered them, but geez, they have SO FEW CHOICES! I wish more salons around here did Gelish, they have so many more colors to pick from!

I agree! That's why I'll do Gelish or even OPI when bored of their colors. THEY NEED MORE!!

do they charge you to take it off if you don't want it on again?
My salon does not charge you if you are re-applying or doing another manicure. Otherwise, if you go in for just the removal, there is a charge.

I had my nails done for DD's wedding. They did look beautiful, but I felt the whole removal process was damaging to my nails. With that said, it is something that I would reserve for special occasions.

I have never done it (yet) It does sound like the removal process is harsh, BUT is it worth it for vacation?

I keep gels on all the time - I can make mine last about 3 weeks, but at that point the growth of my nail is beginning to be too obvious near the cuticle.

I guess I need to find a new salon though - they do have me soak in acetone to remove and this last time, I noticed that my nails are really dried out. It is worth it to me though - I have never been able to keep regular polish on for more than a day or two without them looking like a mess.

I've done both French and color, but French is my usual. LOVE them. I can't imagine NOT doing them for vacation.
