It was suggested that we check out Shades of Green for our upcoming trip. In comparison to where we were going to stay its significantly cheaper. We don't intend on spending too much time in the room but after having only ever stayed on Disney property I was wondering if there was a huge difference in comparison. I'd love to hear your experience and thoughts. I would be staying there in December with my husband and 2 boys - 8 and 6.

Thanks!

Hi--here's a thread with more information on SoG than you probably could ever want to know. :)

We've stayed at SoG several times over the years and really like it. The rooms are very large, the pool area's been recently renovated and it's a short walk (or Shady Shuttle ride) to the end of the drive where you can cross the street and access the monorail at the Poly. The bus runs to/from the parks on a set schedule, which I like. The staff is very friendly and it has a military-friendly feel I like.

I don't think the food is that great, but it's not horrible, either, and there are other options close by at the Poly.

We've been staying at SOG for several years now and really like it. The location is great, the rooms are large, the staff is very helpful, the bus runs like clockwork and it has a military feel to it without being too military. We've stayed at the Contemporary and also Wilderness Lodge Villas and keep coming back to SOG. You can still use all of Disney's transportation so don't let the bus schedule scare you off. We wind up taking the monorail to the Polynesian most times and walking back to SOG across the street. I've only had breakfast there so I can't really comment on the food. We'll be going back in December.

If you have any specific questions, just let me know.

My grandson likes Sog better than Beaches. It is a small resort and people very friendly. Because of size and more low key environment it is perfect for my youngest grandson who has ADHD/Autistic spectrum. He needs to wind down at end of day. Also the pools are great!

We've stayed there a couple times and may actually end up staying there again on our next trip. It's very nice, large rooms, friendly atmosphere, bus schedule is good and less crowded than Disney buses. A couple of things we didn't like are lack of good places to eat and lack of Disney theme that you are used to at the Disney resorts. It's on Disney property but don't expect the theme to be the same. The prices are great and don't go up during "peak" seasons.

Great location, large comfortable rooms with balconies or patios. There are more eating options now that they've reopened several of the eateries. Busses run on a schedule so it's easy to plan. We had THE BEST bus driver there. We had done a split stay at CBR and SOG. The bus driver at SOG gave us all sorts of disney trivia as we drove and talked to everyone on the bus asking us where we were visiting from. He was great!

Love being able to walk to Poly for Monorail or busses to parks if we didn't want to wait for SOG bus schedule (and to get dole whip!).

Pros:
Large rooms
Price
Close to Poly

Cons:
Onsite dining options

Maybe pros or cons depending on your preference:
Not overwhelming Disney theming
Quiet atmosphere
Bus drivers can be stringent when it comes to seeing your SOG ID before boarding buses

We are now DVC ,but had stayed at all of the Values and Moderates before becoming eligible to stay at SOG and when we want a quick trip and are out of points SOG is the first place I look. We are looking at location and room size and SOG always comes out on top. I think the resort itself is far prettier than I expected from a military resort and the atmosphere is so respectful and quiet we really enjoy staying there. An added plus is that for just a few dollars more than a value resort standard view, we can get a much larger poolside room at SOG (and I pay the highest rate at SOG!)
We enjoy going to Evergreens for bar food and drinks at prices that can't be beat on Disney property, the food is good and can't beat the prices.

Starbucks coffee, ice cream in lobby and great prices at the on-site exchange!
