My father served in the US Army during the Korean conflict(no,Hawkeye WASN'T his doctor:happytv: ). My mother asked me the other day if as his widow she was entitled to make a reservation and stay at Shades of Green and I couldn't answer her question one way or the other. I am sure that someone on the Dis will be able to answer her question,so I am posing it here. TIA!!!!

Did your father retire from the Army? Was he on 100% disability? If the answer to these questions is 'no', then your mother is not eligible to stay.....usually. However, SoG is currently running a special for ANY vet (I do not know if this applies to widows of vets, you would need to call and ask). For Sep and Jan 08 (their slow months), they are allowing vets to stay at the resort. :)

You mom can stay there if your dad was retired from the military (did he serve 20 years or was he medically retired?). It is not open to all those who served, just current active duty, retired, and DOD employees, basically. Their website, www.shadesofgreen.org explains it better.:thumbsup2

Wow, thats great! I have to tell my Dad! :)

Where is this resort? What is it close too? I looked at the web page but it only says that it's on the DW property.

thanks

It's next to the Poly. It is comparable to a deluxe, with some of the largest rooms on property. While it lacks Disney theming, it's a very nice resort at an awesome price (comparable to value resort pricing) We stayed in June and enjoyed it. Our rooms were always clean when we came back in the afternoons, Room service was good and CHEAP!

It's the old Disney Hotel right across the street from the Poly co-mingled with the golf courses. It was just rebuilt a few years ago and is gorgeous. The rooms are as large as any on WDW and have 2 queen beds and a queen pullout. There are some good restaurants and a great sports bar on the property. You either have to be active, reserve, NG, retired (gray area counts), or in a special category -- MoH winners, DoD employee, etc. The requirements are posted on the site OP have listed. Generally, if you have some sort of military ID card you're probably eligible.

They also sell discounted tickets there and as all military installation there are no taxes. We've stayed there many times and it is fabulous.

I thought Shades of Green used to allow Purple Heart (bullet catchers extraordinaire) recipients, under 100% disability, access to Shades of Green.

This would be a decent thing to do, as I imagine there are quite a few folks who could benefit from this (selfishly...... like me).

Not a big deal for me and mine, as I can currently afford regular WDW resorts just fine. I imagine there are others who would really benefit.

Okay,my father was drafted into the army for the Korean War and was honorably discharged,so I guess my mother isn't eligible. Thanks for the answers!!

My DH served 8 years in the ANG and has an Honorable Discharge, and I don't think he's eligible either.

We went on a cruise last year with Carnival, and he did qualify for military discounts with them. It sure would be nice if DW allowed that too!

I am sorry you guys do not qualify. It is a great thing for the military who have to put up with so much. Kind of makes you want to stay in. Hmmmm, No more Iraq? Shades of Green? No more Iraq? Shades of Green? :confused3 Can I take a physical challenge?

Ok let me see if Im reading this right.

My Dad is retired military(Marine).
My brother and brother-in law currently are in IRAQ (Marines).

Im the Cop in the family so I dont qualify Or can they make reservations for my family and I. OR do I qualify as a family member? I tried to email them with no luck.

thanks

For my part, no problem at all. I agree that active duty/active reserve should have priority (frankly, it should be free w/ticker tape parades to and from WDW & banquets w/o end).......

It is a shame and verifiable fact that we do very little for those who sacrifice the most in this country. When I was a child , my grandfather (WW1/WW2) would tell me a story about tending the trees and how there are 2 types of people in the world: those who tend the trees and those who sit under the tree and enjoy it's shade. I never really understood what he was talking about when I was a kid (now if he had included lightsabers....well, that would have been different)

I understand too well what he is talking about now and will pass this knowledge on to my children.

I always think of this story when I pass "Shades of Green".

Again, a heartfelt thank you to those who "tend the tree of liberty" for us all today. Hopefully, we as a people, can figure out a better to honor your sacrifices.

Regards,

You may stay at Shades as long as the qualifing person is staying there. Spouses, as long as they have military id, may stay and reserve rooms for other guests as well. They may reserve up to 3 rooms.

If someone in your family has a 12-month or longer deployment to Iraq, you may be eligible for the OEF discount. Check the SOG website or call them--we are paying $266 a night for a family suite at SOG with a meal plan for seven days...room rate on the suite alone was $250--so you can see what a good deal that is!

It is worth asking about!

As long as a qualifying individual is staying there, they can reserve rooms in their name for you and your family. you cannot stay there alone, however, your father or Brother/BIL must also be staying there at the same time.

The meal plan is breakfast and dinner at one of the SoG restaraunts. That would probably be for each night reserved.
