SHADES OF GREEN at Walt Disney World Resort Thread

Since our early May visits have been steadily getting more and more crowded - and our last visit this past May was way too crowded for our taste - we have decided to try a different time of year. We are thinking of trying the first couple weeks of October to try for both low crowds and the Halloween decorations. Has anyone here been in early October? How is the weather and crowd levels?

Thanks!

Let's just say my DBF is going to be quite ticked:headache: if the hot tub is closed due to pool construction when we go in a few weeks. He keeps talking about how the hot tub will do his back wonders! :cloud9:

I can't say I've been in early Oct, but have always wanted to go then. Just remember Food and Wine Fest is going on then, so the parks, esp EPCOT may be more full.

Crappolla. :sad2: I looked it up and that festival goes from the end of Sept. all the way into November. I can only hope that, at the very beginning of the festival, the crowds will still be low to moderate.

We we there last October, and Epcot was VERY crowded due to the Food and Wine Festival...it was like the world's largest pub crawl. LOL. Our's was a last minute trip, and we stayed at CRS, which at that time of the year was a great bargain with the military discount. The hot tub at CRS was fabulous; couldn't get DH out of it, so he'll be pretty upset if the Shades hot tub is closed when we're there. We really did not have time to make ADR's before we left, and I didn't think we would have much trouble with TS meals in October, but I was WRONG; all the good restaurants were booked. I kept thinking there must have been some convention going on???? The good news was that the lines for the majority of the attractions were low...... I suppose everyone was too busy eating.:rotfl:

We went in Oct 2010 for F&W and stayed at SoG. Epcot wasn't bad except on the weekends. Even then, it was fun so long as you had realistic expectations on crowds. The rest of the parks were practically empty, which was a new experience for us. We're already planning a return for Oct 2013.

We love going in October. Our first Disney vacation was Easter so it was packed. Since then we've gone October, November & December. We've never noticed EPCOT being too crowded during the F&W Festival. The weather is wonderful & Halloween is sooo fun. I recommend MNSSHP it's great fun to see all the costumes and the parade is amazing:thumbsup2

We our kids were younger and went with us, we always went in the beginning of Oct, it was perfect, then more and more found out about it and well it became too crowded for us. We love the middle to end of September, beginning of May and the weekend right after Thanksgiving through the second full week in December.

I believe not only is the F&W going on but a marathon as well in the beginning of Oct.

In fact we just changed our trip from Oct to Sept again, due to the crowds and Disney having the week we picked, blacked out from FDDP and and other discounts! I have a feeling it is going to be crowded unfortunately.

Same here!! Dh spends a lot of time in there due to his injuries. When are you going? If it is after us I can let you know. We are going Sept 14th-21st

Just avoid going when Columbus Day weekend is included! Very crowded at all parks!!

Correct me if I am wrong. Messing with my spreadsheet it would seem that for lengthy stays (in my case 10 nights), if you want to stay at a WDW property (Not SoG), your best financial plan (barring any discounts/offers) is to book room only and get the S&S tix from SoG.
From what I can tell if I do that, and Disney does indeed offer the 35% discount again next year, I can book two rooms at POR instead of the Junior Suite at SoG and it will only cost me an extra $500. SoG is nice (I have stayed there before) but we stayed several times at POR when in was Dixie Landings and it holds a lot of sentiment for us.
Of course if they do offer the discount Poly is also a possibility. I have always wanted to stay there but even with the discount I could only afford one room and I am not sure my wife, myself, 21 year old daughter and 19 year old 6'3" son would be comfortable in a single room. AAARGH!! I hate making decisions!!

I have a hard time just reading and following your numbers, but I'm thinking You're right with your first paragraph. It would be interesting which saves you more, the 35% off room rate or the free dining. I guess your kids are still in school so the dates might not help? I think your family would be most comfortable in one room at SOG -so spacious and it has the extra pull out couch.

Our stay at SOG before DVC was in mid October - right after Columbus Day, celebrating DH's graduation from Sr NCO Academy. The crowds were low and the weather was great! It was a little cooler in the evenings, but it was very nice in the daytime. It seemed to rain at night and be all fresh and clean in the morning! Loved it! Of course that was before the F&W started. I'll bet the crowds are low at the other parks besides Epcot though.

I had a thought and wondered if anyone here has any experience with this from prevoius years. Again, we want to have 6 days in the park. What if we bought the military salute ticket and then took it to the park and asked to add on two more days? Would they use the price we paid as the starting point, or the number of days your ticket is for? Or maybe these are not upgradable at all? :confused3

They are not upgradable. DH and I wanted 8 days so we bought four tickets.

Hi. I'm really glad I found this site. I was looking through this thread, but its really long and I didn't see my question, so I apologize if this has already been brought up. We will be staying at SOG for the first time next month, as my DH is a veteran and they allow veterans in September with a copy of their DD214. I was wondering since we will be staying there, if we get park ticket discounts like what is posted on their website. When I made the reservations, the woman wasn't very clear on it and said to call back a month before and talk with the ticket people. We don't leave for a little over a month, so I don't want to call yet. Can anyone help? Thanks!

We are doing the same thing. It's very confusing. I have been told that we can buy them there and also get the salute ones but I have also been told that you cannot>:confused:

If anyone has any input on this please let us know!! I have 39 days left and getting very anxious!!!

In order to use the Salute tickets you HAVE to be active duty retired, reservists or National Guard.

However, Shades does sell discounted tickets for the parks..
