My mom loves to sew, but she is left-handed and has a hard time finding good scissors. She's not internet-savvy, so she would never look online for them, she's only visit the local fabric store, etc., where they tend to be a bit expensive. Her only pair is now broken, so she definitely needs a new pair.

So I want to get her a nice pair of scissors for lefties for Christmas. What is a good brand? How much should I expect to pay?

Please help! Thank you!!!

Ok, I will help you on this because I am left-handed and I hate the whole scissors conspiracy that the right-handed world has pushed upon an unsuspecting public but you have to promise me that your mom will not run through the house with these scissors. I don't care how many times you have to warn her, if I catch her running with them I come by and take them away and she'll be left trying to tear fabric and paper with her teeth because we all know a true lefty cannot use right-handed scissors and there is no such thing as a pair of scissors that can be used by either hand. This is a myth that is used to steal money from left-handed people desparate to cut straight.

You should look at Fiskars they have a very good set of left-handed paper and household scissors (prices range from $5 - $15) and Victorinox makes a great set of fabric and professional scissors (for around $20 - $30). A couple of good outlets on the internet are www.thelefthand.com and www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk if you are looking for web sites.

Now if someone would just outlaw the fountain pen and spiral notebooks I would be one happy left-handed camper.

Thanks, Jeff...I promise you that my mother has never in her entire life run with scissors, especially left-handed scissors!

I will check out the Victorinox scissors and the lefthand.com tonight.

Does anyone know anything about Gingher scissors? I found those on a couple of websites, they look like stainless steel. I just want to be sure I get her a good-quality pair of scissors for the $25-$50 range.

My wife has a pair of left-handed Gingher and really likes them. They do keep a good sharp edge and rarely need to be sharpened (unless I use them to cut stuff then I really hear about how I am ruining her scissors).

Although I am not left handed I swear by my Ginghers and my family knows if I EVER catch them touching them without permission, especially if they are being used on (gasp, horrror, terror) paper I will probably swear at them!

That being said if they have a left hand pair I'd suggest those.
