I've got a question regarding sewing patterns and I'm looking for a variety of opinions. I've been sewing for a LOOOOONG time and I know I should know the answer to this, but it's still something I struggle with every time.
I honestly don't know what size pattern I should make. In the past I've been told both to take your measurements and use the size chart on the back of the envelope AND to ignore the envelope and make the size you normally wear. Right now I'd like to start on my Halloween costume so I've pulled out a few patterns. I took my measurements and compared them to the envelope, and according to that I'd have to use the pattern that is 3 sizes bigger than I normally wear.
I know - it's a really basic thing. But for some reason I get it wrong more often than I get it right. I'm more of a self-taught sewer and I can make anything from a pattern, but not real great at altering patterns on the fly.
So how about it all you experienced seamstresses out there - how do you figure out what size pattern to make?
