~~~SEWING my way to POFQ ~ American Girl outfits & Custom Park Bags! ~~~
I love the new bag. It is so awesome! I like the cow print trim and the appliques are wonderful. The slinky dog turned out great. Overall the whole bag is stunning! You'll definitely get a lot of attention when you carry that around the park!
OMG! You've done it again! :worship::worship::worship: How freakin' awesome is that bag???? LOVE!!!!!
I guess I'm going to be spending naptime making more pages for my TR :) Well worth it to see you fabulous new bag creation!
I think your Ultimate Park Bag was a perfect size for the parks . . . it forced me to travel light. That said, there were times I wished it would fit my Nikon D80 . . .but remember, I still have to travel with a spare outfit or two for Finn :confused3
D~
Love your new bag. For me, it would be too large to carry in the parks. (with my neck I have to travel light!)
What I did was to go over every possible situation, and what I would need for it...and then went through the list to see what things would serve double duty. If you normally need to carry a lot of stuff, then the bag would be a great size...but if you don't need a diaper bag sized bag for every day use....then why carry something you will be sorry for later?
I made the girls the small size Rosetta bag, and they discovered after the first day that it was too big for a daily bag. (they each ended up just using their pockets for their tickets and some lip gloss.)
I used a borrowed fanny pack (yes, I know!) and ended up having it live on the stroller more than carrying it. It was too large!
Unless you have kiddies in diapers, you probably won't really need to carry too much!
I love the idea of packing it with what you think you might need and carry it around the mall for a while. An hour will show you if it is too much.
On our last trip...I actually kept up with what I used each day. All meds (we take a lot) for each day was put in a plastic zippered baggie, hand sanitizer/wipe was placed in a zippered plastic bag, money/tickets/credit cards were placedin another zippered plastic bag....and I had another one of those 'expensive' zippered plastic bags for my phone and camera! (made it super easy to go through baggage check!)
All that rambling to say....even though the bag is gorgeous...it doesn't mean you have to take it every day in the park! Smaller is better...
Nini
OK... I don't have time to reply to everyone right now... but I do want to say that I carried the bag all day today - and I agree... it is waaaay too large for a park bag. It will be great as a carry-on, but I think I need to make a smaller version as a park bag. Grrr - I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone... Hopefully I have time to make another one before we leave??
D~
AHHHHHH! I'm so far behind! Just saw the Toy Story bag you made and it's awesome! I have a serious bag obsession!
I think keeping up with the DIS is going to be my New Year's Resolution! Off to catch up.
I LOVE your New Year's resolution!!! :thumbsup2
By the way...the mannequin is almost finished. I didn't have any stuffing! I spend three hours cutting batting in to tiny strips and squares to stuff the mannequin...then I realized it needed something like a large bead or Christmas Ornament on top...which I don't have handy...so I have to go shopping to get that. (to anyone thinking of purchasing the pattern...there is a free pattern available from the DIY Dish. They don't call it an AG dress form...they call it a pin cushion...but it is the same. I'm not sure if it is the same size....but I'm sure 'someone' can check on that for you....)
*** Just checked...the dimensions are very small for the pin cushion. it is about the same length as the one for the AG, but only about a fourth as wide. I guess you really would have to purchase the one from Liberty Jane to get the exact pattern...unless you were crafty enough to come up with your own pattern!~
Nini
I am glad you were able to check, I was worried it might be a bit small... Is the pattern from Liberty Jane really expensive?
OH MY GOSH!!! I love these!!!! I have PF too and you are right this is perfect! What is the brand, do you have a link??? I can't buy them but I can drool!
Did I ever tell you while in high school I did shoe modeling at shoe shows??? I didn't get paid much BUT I got a MUCH better perk...any and ALL the shoes I wanted (and lots I didn't, the manufacturers would try to woo me to get my boss to buy their shoes for our store)! I had over ***GULP*** 500 pairs of shoes! I had the perfect size 6 foot (THEN, not now after four children :rotfl2:). I DID share with my friends...but most of them had a foot that was too big...and my MOM's foot was too small!!!...SO, now you know another fact about me you never knew (or wanted to know...I just LOVE shoes though and never get to wear pretty ones anymore)
STALKING YOU for your latest creation!
Here's the link to the shoe website: http://www.alegriashoes.com/feliz/?sort=bestselling The zebra ones are not on there, but they have them on Amazon.
As for D~'s address...I have it although I could NEVER sell it.....
Thanks for protecting me... :thumbsup2
ooh I love those shoes.
See above for the link to the shoes. :thumbsup2
HOW ADORABLE! I totally want a pair!
I put the link above. :thumbsup2
LOVEEE IT!!!
Perfect as a carry-on! What do you carry around the parks? I guess that's hhow you will judge if it is to big?-- or maybe just a trial?
Thanks. :)
That new bag is awesome! It is much bigger than I like to carry in the park, but it is perfect for a carry on bag! I find that the bigger the bag you carry, the more other people ask you to carry their stuff too
Thanks! :)
Take it to the mall for an hour with everything you would carry in the park and see how it feels after an hour... We could be over reacting!
Excellent idea... I carried it today... :rolleyes1
Love the shoes, Love the bag, but it might be a little big for the parks. I like the idea of trying it out at the mall to test it out.
Thanks! Yup, I carried it today...
I LOVE THE TOY STORY BAG!!!
It does look a little big for in the parks. MY bag was perfect as a park bag! It fit on all the rides. Held everything I wanted it too. Looked awesome. Pat had a big honkin' back pack for our whole trip though. So it just really depends on what you want to carry.
I think the idea someone posted about taking it to the mall with everything you want in it at the parks is a great idea!
Here's a photo of me with my bag.....just because I love it so much....
th_178.jpg
Thanks for the mini review... And thanks for the excellent feedback in my store. :lovestruc And I soooooo love the picture of you with your bag - it's so cute on you! I am just so glad that you liked it.
I love your bag
this is fabulous. I love it. I like the suggestion of carrying it around the mall for an hour or two.
I think Slinky Dog is my favorite part of the bag.
Thanks, I'll let Josh know that you liked his idea best. :thumbsup2 Boost his ego a bit. LOL
Its not any bigger than some of those backpacks people carry around all day. It might be a little big for rides, but if you used it for a DTD day or something it could work. Just be sure to make up business cards and have them with you. You will get alot of comments and requests for this one Love it!
Thanks! I think that's an excellent idea... A DTD bag, since we'll be shopping and who wants to use a Disney plastic bag for their purchases??? I'll be eco friendly. :thumbsup2
I love the bag and it was so worth the wait!!! I agree you MIGHT want something a bit smaller to carry around all day. That bag would be the PERFECT size to hook on the back of Lisa's wheelchair ...I am just saying...Might make a NEW item to your line of beautiful items you make to help buy more shoes...or go back to Disney!
Hmmm... Excellent idea Judy... Actually, I've already been working on a design for an actual wheelchair bag.... :lovestruc
Your bags are AMAZING!!!! I still can't believe you have only been sewing a year!!!
I have a question - For your appliques, do you have a special embroidery machine? I hear you talk about Patience and Rocket but I have no idea what they really are other than sewing machines.
If you do use a special machine, which embroidery machine do you all suggest?
Thank you! :lovestruc
I don't use any special embroidery machines... I would love to have a Brother PE770 - but I chose to go to Disney instead - so the new embroidery machine will have to wait...
Patience does all of my regular sewing.... She does a phenominal straight stitch.
IMG_15243.jpg
Mr. Rocket does all of my appliqueing... All you need is a machine that does a satin stitch (tight zig-zag) - although - most of the time Mr. Rocket has me doing more swearing than sewing - but that's a story for another day...
IMG_224115.jpg
Mr. Rocket does nothing but zig zag for me - but sometimes, I feel he'd be better off as a lawn ornament... I am still on a quest for a Singer 237 (Marianne....)
I also have a serger to finish some seams, but to be honest I really try to use vintage methods to finish my seams rather than the serger, I like the way they look, and the quality seems better. That's just my personal opinion though.
I love the new bag. It is so awesome! I like the cow print trim and the appliques are wonderful. The slinky dog turned out great. Overall the whole bag is stunning! You'll definitely get a lot of attention when you carry that around the park!
Thank you.... I hope I don't get that much attention... :rolleyes1
OMG! You've done it again! How freakin' awesome is that bag???? LOVE!!!!!
Thanks Marianne... :lovestruc
Thanks for the awesome review Marianne. :lovestruc I am very glad you liked it... Maybe you'd be a great candidate for the Mammoth Messenger Bag???? ROFL... Finn would probably even fit in there - with the camera - you'd have your own carry-on photographer. :thumbsup2
D~
I know, I am thinking the same thing...
Nini
You are right Nini... I was thinking that I would need it to be big because we like to carry sweatshirts with us every day, but I think it will just be too much. I need to draft a different pattern that is along the same lines, but smaller.... But not too small... Thinking it should have more of a curve to it too...
AHHHHHH! I'm so far behind! Just saw the Toy Story bag you made and it's awesome! I have a serious bag obsession!
I think keeping up with the DIS is going to be my New Year's Resolution! Off to catch up.
THanks!!! I know, it's so hard to keep up here... DH thinks I am on here too much as it is. :surfweb:
I LOVE your New Year's resolution!!! :thumbsup2
:furious: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :furious:
Just spent 20 minutes replying to a number of posters and my witty :rotfl2: repartee vanished into thin air.
D~ -- your new bag is amazing. The detail and all of the thought that goes into it is over the top. I especially love the box pleat pockets with the cow fabric peeking out. And, I love Josh's suggestion of the doggie.
Nini -- you're a genius. The tip about pinning the seams seems to have worked. I created a number of learning opportunities (AKA mistakes :rotfl: ) for the next one, but I finished the quilt, make a pillowcase, and then made a pillow. One thing I learned is that it's not just carpenters who need to measure twice and cut once. :rolleyes1
Photos next year.
So now it's a 237 and NOT a 401a? Hmm . . . :confused3
Welcome! :hug:
Glad you were excited for more pages on my TR! :cool1:
:lmao::rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2:
The thought of Finn chillin' in a messenger bag and popping up like a jack-in-the-box with my camera as I needed it --- well, I'm ROFLMAO!!!!
I was thinking we need to collaborate on a cross between the Ultimate Park Bag and something that would also fit my DSLR. . . I've spent a lot of time today on Pinterest looking at the camera bag inserts one can make to put in a purse :idea: Sort of like Vera's Gabby
pk-000000000065552-d9e827123b1242738ccc32faf0161719-30-1-large.jpg
but somehow crossbody with maybe an outside pocket for maps, etc. :rolleyes: :confused3 Sleep on it, we'll chat :)
I could NOT carry a big messenger bag like that - my back would be so out of whack by the end of day one :sad2: That was something that DH even commented on with my Figment bag - I couldn't stuff it full of junk to weigh it down and cause myself problems :thumbsup2
D... :worship: love that bag!
That bag would be perfect for me in the parks but I would probably hang it from our stroller:lmao:
Had to skim, will try to get caught up tomorrow ... but wanted to comment:
Totally love the TS bag!!!! If you're worried about the size, take it for trial runs and see how it feels. :thumbsup2
Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR! :wizard:
Oh, and ACK!!!! I forgot to tell you all.... I found another pair of shoes I am dying to get for our AK days... I am trying sooooo hard to resist, but they would be perfect! I have the perfect outfits to create around these shoes and even (another) coordinating bag...
OK fine, twist my arm... I'll show you a picture...
th_ALG-FEL-420_02.jpg
Aren't they CUTE???? OK, I confess... Since I have PF(plantar fascitis) - I can only wear certain shoes, and most of them look like they are orthopedic shoes... So, it's very rare that there is a cute shoe out there that is rated high for those with pf... And this shoe rates really high. But, I would have to buy them right now, so I could break them in before our trip (of course, my trusty flip flops would be carried every day, as a back up)... But I could totally see myself wearing these shoes to AK!!
OK - I am done with shoe shopping today....
D~ <----- Josh has said, for years, that I have a shoe problem, I didn't believe him...
You MUST get those shoes!!!! I love Mary Jane's :lovestruc I love them with the zebra print. Too bad they don't have a Ross Dress for Less price tag.
OH MY GOSH!!! I love these!!!! I have PF too and you are right this is perfect! What is the brand, do you have a link??? I can't buy them but I can drool!
STALKING YOU for your latest creation!
I would model for free if it meant 500 pairs of shoes! You think anyone would be interested in my size 8.5 monsters?
It is a little short but that wouldn't surprise me after Dorrrine has been hanging around with Ginger and Rod:sad2:
:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl::lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:
OK, so here is another personal bag for me to carry on our trip... I made it almost 2" deeper than the girls', because I wanted to use it as my carry-on, as well.
I loved the theme of the sample Meduim Autograph Bag so much, that I just wanted one for myself...
I quilted it, rather than interfacing it, because I wanted it to be softer - it took a very long time to quilt, and Victoria quilted about half the pieces for me. She did a great job, and is really doing an awful lot to help me out in the sewing room these days. :lovestruc
I also quilted the interior pocket.
I added box pleats to the main pockets under the flap and side pockets. I also line the interior of the box pleats, so when you have stuff in the pockets, they open up to reveal the lining.
I added a slip in pocket to the back, and I quilted that, as well.
Front:
Applique close-up, this is a huge applique... Woody's face is bigger than my hand!:
Under the flap:
I put box pleats in all the pockets, and I just love how the pleats open up to reveal cow print:
Looking down into the main part of the bag:
Revised interior quilted pocket - that I like so much better:
th_IMG_24983.jpg
And I lined it with COW:
th_IMG_24972.jpg
Back... This is what Josh wanted me to add to the bag - it's not often that he makes requests for me, so I really felt it was important to include it...
th_IMG_250712.jpg
Inside the back slip in pocket:
th_IMG_250813.jpg
Victoria was kind enough to model the bag for me, so you could see the size relativity...
th_IMG_251114.jpg
Over all, I am very happy with how it turned out - however, now that it's finished, I am uncertain if it's too big to use in the parks. For a carry-on size, it's perfect - but as a park bag - I am just not sure??? THoughts???
D~ <--- Who just realized she forgot her LGMH!!!
Adorable! I agree that it's too big for a park bag, but then again I had dh with me who willingly carried a backpack with the cam corder and autograph books. And we just have a point and shoot. Someday I want a good camera -- well today is the day I want one but I should say someday I will get one (when Marianne buys my house in RI -- she goes often enough that she needs her own place and it's close to her mom's and just 5 miles from a Walmart with fabric). I love the pleat pockets -- very impressive! Great applique and I adore Josh's request! Hmmm, that fabric looks mighty familiar as well.
And Judy, forgot to mention, Cheryl is already purchasing D's address from me.
I LOVE THE TOY STORY BAG!!!
It does look a little big for in the parks. MY bag was perfect as a park bag! :goodvibes It fit on all the rides. Held everything I wanted it too. Looked awesome. Pat had a big honkin' back pack for our whole trip though. So it just really depends on what you want to carry.
So great seeing the bag modeled!
As for me.... still haven't finished the AG doll skirt -- it was nice out yesterday so we went to the zoo. And then I noticed dd took off the zebra dress I made for AG doll and had her dressed back in her sightseeing outfit :confused3 I didn't even get a picture yet. I also think Samantha now has a wonky leg from dd putting her on the horse (which appears bigger than the My Generation horses so perhaps my find wasn't so great after all). We did watch the Samantha movie a couple of days ago and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised -- I loved it! Today we are going to the aquarium but I should be able to do some sewing as well and finish up the skirt.
So now it's a 237 and NOT a 401a? Hmm . . . :confused3
OK - so here's my thinking on a 401a... Bare with me a minute. Sooo... Mr. Rocket is a 503a - and a HUGE PITA (he does a very nice satin stitch - but will only do that with Gutermann thread - if I try and stick another brand in him - which sometimes can't be helped - he skips stitches all the time)... The 401a and the 503a are the exact same machine with a different cover. So, I am thinking that the 401a could easily be as big of a PITA as Mr. Rocket... Why do that to myself??? When the 237 has an amazing zig-zag reputation (not sure of it's straight stitching capabilities - but I don't care - I have Patience for that)... Soooo, I am pretty sure I am in the market for a 237, and I might just sell off Mr. Rocket - definately not to that scheming sewing machine guy though... :confused3 Does any of that make sense?
The thought of Finn chillin' in a messenger bag and popping up like a jack-in-the-box with my camera as I needed it --- well, I'm ROFLMAO!!!!
I figured that would give you a nice chuckle... Because the Jack-in-the-box was exactly what I had in mind, and he is so little, he could pull it off. :lovestruc
I was thinking we need to collaborate on a cross between the Ultimate Park Bag and something that would also fit my DSLR. . . I've spent a lot of time today on Pinterest looking at the camera bag inserts one can make to put in a purse :idea: Sort of like Vera's Gabby
Yes, we will talk... I would love to design something for you that would fit a DSLR - I know there is a huge market for that sort of bag at WDW - it would be so much fun to create!
I guess, when I wear the messenger bag, and when I have it on - it's not as big as it looks on Victoria... She is a pretty small adult... I am much bigger - so it doesn't look as huge on me. Does that make sense? The reason I was thinking a big bag - even though I don't carry much in the parks, is that I like to carry a sweatshirt with me, for when I get hot, I can put it in the bag. Sweatshirts aren't heavy, just bulky.
The only things I carry in my bag will be:
Small bottle of sunscreen
Mini-Planner
Sharpie
Journal
Pen
Small zip wallet with my $$ and KTTW
lip gloss
sunglasses
maybe a couple of disposible ponchos
phone
PnS camera
I think that's it... And then maybe a sweatshirt - which I could wrap around my waist, but I hate that look...
D... :worship: love that bag!
That bag would be perfect for me in the parks but I would probably hang it from our stroller:lmao:
Thanks... Yes, I think it would be a perfect stroller bag.
Had to skim, will try to get caught up tomorrow ... but wanted to comment:
I know, that price tag is really throwing me for a loop - considering that I just got the Keens. But I really want those shoes! :lovestruc
As for me.... still haven't finished the AG doll skirt -- it was nice out yesterday so we went to the zoo. And then I noticed dd took off the zebra dress I made for AG doll and had her dressed back in her sightseeing outfit :confused3 I didn't even get a picture yet. Today we are going to the aquarium but I should be able to do some sewing as well and finish up the skirt.
It sounds like you had a fun day yesterday. :lovestruc The Samantha movie is one of my favorite - it just warms the heart... And I love the scene where they have all the old cast iron sewing machines (but not the part where all the kids are sewing on them)... It's a great holiday movie, very wholesome. Have fun at the aquarium today, and sewing later. :lovestruc
I plan on working on a Zip wallet for a fellow Diser today... And hopefully have time to run to the fabric store to get a bit more fabric for the rest of my next bag.
I found the fabric for the inerior of Allison's Up bag yesterday... I've been on an endless search for balloon fabric (that doesn't say Happy Birthday), and I guess it's nowhere to be found - at least not in the colors that I visualize. So, I had to go with something else - which I think is really cute.
So, that's the plan for today... A bit of sewing, a bit of shoppping... perfect day IMO. :lovestruc
Shoes...awesome!
TS Bag...OMG...WOW...WOW...WOW!!!! That is one great bag! Will it fit under a seat (I try to never put things in the overhead bin)?
Oh...may your new year be happy, healthy and prosperous!
Lynn
LOVE all your bags!!! I just LOVE Slinky! I've been thinking of making my DD something Slinky for years but haven't had the courage (or time).
Sorry I got so far behind in your PTR.
My laptop broke so I have to fight with the kids to get on my desktop. And work has been crazy! I've been following along (a very nice distraction from all the stress work) but haven't had time to post.
Are you still thinking of doing an Up bag? I made my DD a Dug dress that doesn't fit any more-who said she could grow.:laughing: Thankfully she was able to wear it on 2 trips where we got to see Dug and the other Up characters in the park.
I'm heading to WDW Wednesday for Marathon weekend. I am NOT ready to do the half on Saturday but have committed to my friend to give it a good try. Hoping some magic will kick in. I'm thinking of making some sort of simple cross body iPhone case for the marathon. I have a runner's belt that the iPhone fits in but it is a snug fit so not easy to take in/out. I am thinking I will want to take lots of photos but won't want to carry the phone in my hand for 13.1 miles so I need something that is easier to get the phone in/out of. Maybe I should go for a walk today and try out my bigger waist pack rather than trying to make something.
OH...and my Viking machine only likes Gutermann too.
Thanks Lynn - I hope you have a wonderful New Year, as well. :lovestruc
Since the bag is quilted, it will fit anywhere I put it, it's quite flexible. :lovestruc I'm 99% positive it will fit under the seat.
LOVE all your bags!!! I just LOVE Slinky! I've been thinking of making my DD something Slinky for years but haven't had the courage (or time).
Totally OK! I understand that life happens. :lovestruc
Well, I am glad that you made it back to us, at least. :wizard: I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New year. :wizard:
I am planning on doing an Up bag for dd - I have most of the fabric for it now, so I just need to get one more accent fabric, then I can start working in it - in between other projects.
I'm heading to WDW Wednesday for Marathon weekend. I am NOT ready to do the half on Saturday but have committed to my friend to give it a good try. Hoping some magic will kick in. I'm thinking of making some sort of simple cross body iPhone case for the marathon. I have a runner's belt that the iPhone fits in but it is a snug fit so not easy to take in/out. I am thinking I will want to take lots of photos but won't want to carry the phone in my hand for 13.1 miles so I need something that is easier to get the phone in/out of. Maybe I should go for a walk today and try out my bigger waist pack rather than trying to make something.
OH...and my Viking machine only likes Gutermann too.
How exciting about the marathon - I hope you'll post pictures! :thumbsup2 I think a crossbody iPhone case would be an excellent idea... How about a pouch sized for the iPhone (mabye a bit deeper), and have it hang on a lanyard around your neck??? Possibly some sort of velcro/button closure on it??? Deep enough that it doesn't fall out while you are running, but easy enough to get out when you want to take a picture??? Does that help you at all? I"d happily make my idea for you, if I'd have time to ship it... :hug: I wish you the best of luck anyways - I am sure you will have a wonderful marathon! :lovestruc I hope you'll come back here and tell us all about it. :)
What is it about Gutermann 100% Polyester thread... Even the 100% cotton Gutermann isn't good enough for Mr. Rocket... :rolleyes1
Oh, and I forgot to tell everyone...
It's official... I brought up the luggage from the basement, and I've started packing... Nothing real crazy or anything...
Just made sure that all my travel sized stuff is full, made a list of travel sized items I need to get yet.
Sorted our pins, and took my display pins off of my lanyard (still debating on making myself a lanyard...), and put them away so I don't lose them on the trip. I still need the girls to go through their lanyards and decide which pins they are trading and which ones they are keeping. I started to fill up a quart sized zip-loc with all our traders...
Then I got all of our ear hats (and my Donald Duck Butt hat) put in the suitcase...
So, it's official... The packing has begun... WHOOT!!!
I had to come on over. I am in awe of your talent. I used your table of contents and oogled your lovely work!
Aside from enjoying your talent, I loved reading about your family. Thank your husband for his service, and thank you for being an amazing mom and wife while he was gone.
I've never been in March. You certainly are going to have the crowds, but as long as you go early and stick with your plan (I haven't gotten that far in the reading...) you'll probably not realize it is as crowded as it is.
