Sewing Machine help!

There are no machines at our local thrift store. But I did just have an "ah ha!" moment. Tucked away in the back of a closet sits my husband's grandmother's old sewing machine. It's been sitting there broken for years. I have no idea what's wrong with it but it's worth getting it checked out.

Do JoAnns or Hancocks stores usually do repairs? I have no idea where to start looking to get this thing looked at. Any ideas?

Do you have local fabric or quilt shop near you - not a chain store? They are more likely to know if someone fixes sewing machines than someone at Joann - at least around here. Most of the people in my local Joann are there and gone so quickly - they don't really know anything about sewing other than what it is in the store.

You may want to ask this question to the group on the family message board that sews all Disney type clothing etc. They are very knowledgeable.

I have been sewing for over 45 years. I have found that the Brother machines are very nice and inexpensive. I have an old machine that I bought at Sears 28 years ago, paid $1000 for it. It has held up all these years very well. But I like the new machines that automatically thread themselves etc.

I ventured out and bought an overlock a couple of years ago...terrified to try it, but I love it. Once you learn to thread it, it is so wonderful to finish off seams so that they don't fray.

Good luck on whatever you decide. I bought a Brother embroidery machine on sale at Walmart and also my overlock at Walmart. Depends how soon you need it.

A few months ago my daughter killed my Singer sewing machine (metal, over 20 years old) and I replaced it with a Brother HS-2000. I LOVE my new machine!! The self threading needle and drop in bobbin are fantastic. It has more stitches and feet than I'll ever need and it is super easy to use.

In doing some reseach on my husband's grandmother's old sewing machine I found out that his aunt has a sewing machine that she never uses and offered it up! Yea! I love free. I will keep the old sewing machine and search out a place to check it out and see if it can be fixed.

And I began cutting out my first quilt. So far I am enjoying the process and can't wait to start piecing it together.

Thanks you guys for all the input!

Christina
