Hopefully this will make sense...

I have 2 pairs of very light weight shorts, they land about mid thigh so not what I would call to short, and 1 pair of capris and 1 pair of pant. They all are a mixture of linen, or cotton. They fit appropriately, not to tight or to lose..

So my problem is when I wear them and do a lot of walking, they start that crawling up, bunching up, in the crotch area, so that I am trying to adjust them, discreetly and they become so uncomfortable ... . I do have other shorts that are this length in Jeans or Khakis and they don't do this. I was talking to a lady at JoAnne's and she said that the material is to lightweight and I need to put a weight or washer in the inseam and outer seam to add weight...She was like just go to home depot a get some heavy duty washers, and open the seam stick them in and re-sew, and coat them with clear nail polish so they don't rust. It seems to sorta make sense... anyone ever done this? Suggestions?

The clear nail polish won't keep them from rusting for long. A few trips through the washing machine is all you'll get.

I've heard of weighting dress or skirt hems so they fall properly or don't blow around but never with shorts. It makes sense. I would do it at the hem and see how it works before I put any in the crouch because it seems like that could be awkward. I would also be curious if they would set a metal detector off. I don't know what would and wouldn't.

There are such things as weights for hems. I am surprised a lady working in a sewing supply store would not know about them. However, I would not advise using weights as she suggested.

I think it's actually that the fabric is not suited to the purpose, the proper foundation is not being worn and/or the garments do not have ease where needed for the figure type, i.e. the garments do not actually fit well enough to allow for normal movement.

I meant to state clearer, to put the weight in the inseam and outer seam in the hem... not in the crotch area itself. That's a good point about the metal detector... Yikes!!!

I am going to investigate the weights for hems. I sew but not on a regular basis, and very seldom clothing, maybe a holiday apron or a costume for Halloween. I stick mostly with quilts and such. I will say at first I thought she was kidding around. But the longer I talked to her...she seemed serious. Thanks for the info..

I sew, but have never heard of weighting hems on shorts or capris like that. Lighter fabrics can be weighted with additional thread stitching in the construction of the hem. I don't think that will solve the problem. I would look for the undergarments that have the legs in them. That way the fabric will slide easily back down rather than climbing up on your skin. Washers will rust and will set off metal detectors. Also hems are weighted with specially made weights (beads) for that purpose. My daughter likes to wear those Jockey Jammie's.

NoRiders inseam stays work. If you have sewing experience you can make some stays yourself using lightweight boning material and sewing them into the inseam. Otherwise, the NoRiders are a good product. www.noriders.com

The idea about putting weights in your hem might work, but the stays WILL work.

I have a degree in sewing an have never heard of weighting hems for this purpose. I'm willing to bet the problem is actually the fit in your thighs.

Thanks so much, looks simple enough and basically what I need. :worship::worship:pixiedust:pixiedust:

I have to admit I thought it was my thighs as well, but I have several pairs of short this style, made by the same company or at least the label is the same. I measured and re-measured everything, inseam, width of the legs, even from the button around the crotch to the back belt loop its the same the only thing different is the material that they are made out of. Living here in Orlando all I wear is shorts, and capris'(evening).. Lightweight is my mantra...
