I need help! My SIL bought a pair of $120 jeans  and needs to hem them up about 3 inches. She wants to wear them Friday night for her Birthday Party. She came to me to help her and I'm so afraid to touch them. She thinks if we pin the existing hem to where the right length should be and sew it then cut the excess fabric off inside the jeans it should work. That does not sound right with me so we're asking for some opinions. TIA

if I spent 120 dollars for jeans they better have a women in them

They do have a "denim" needle for sewing machines, I think. It just seems they aren't going to look very good. $120 jeans would look like a 50 cent hem job if not done properly.

She might jet into a seamstress (or male equivilant) tomorrow to see if she can do a quick turn around.

Or go back to the store and see if the same pair are available in petite.

I just payed $8.00 per pair to have some new jeans hemmed for DS and I. And, the seamstress who works for the cleaners where I had them done did excellent work!!! That's nearly $40.00 for the four pairs. But, it was worth it.

They were not $120.00 jeans... But, they were nice Levi's red-tabs.

In contrast, I have a halfway decent sewing maching, but the couple of pairs of jeans that I hemmed myself, well, they didn't look as nice.. ;)

PS: It is very easy to get jeans hemmed too short! Remember, you can't put any of the fabric back once you cut it off. And, most jeans are worn longer now. So, don't make that mistake when you mark the jeans.

Yes, I would also reocmmend a seamstress with a cleaners. And for them to hem pants, it really is reasonable.

I'm having the same problem with DD's jeans. She is only 5'2". I always buy her short length jeans. Even so, she has four pairs of jeans that are too long. I paid $35 a pair for these jeans. She wore them a few times and now the bottems are totally ragged. I took them to a tailor, but she wanted $15 a pair to hem them. I said forget it. I don't even own a sewing machine. I'm trying to decide if I can hem them by hand and not have them look stupid. I've also considered by a rack and stretching DD. If it worked, I could put her on America's Next Top Model and she could take care of me in her old age! Forgive me. I'm on cold medication!

Why doesn't she return the $120 jeans, buy cheaper jeans that fit her and take you and I out for her birthday with the money she saved??? :earboy2:
Gotta love my baby sister! :love2:

P.S. Ask her why she just doesn't take them to Mom - I'm sure she would have them hemmed by Friday. :rotfl2:

Ugh, I remember seeing this post a few weeks back and thinking how glad I was that I rarely have this problem (dress pants are another story). Well, yesterday I broke my tradition of only buying jeans at Express and bought an $11 pair at Target. They are SO long! (I knew that when I bought them, but I have several other pairs of pants that need to be hemmed, so it's not that big of a deal I guess) It's frustrating to me because I'm 5'6"-I don't understand why so many pants are too long! So I need to make sure the lady who does my pants has the right needle? Does that sound right?

First off...there isn't anything wrong with $120 jeans.

secondly - IMO - those are "designer" jeans...a "regular" hem will not cut it. Have her take it to a seamstress and have an ORIGINAL hem done. (they cut out some of the length and use the original hem...sounds wierd...but it looks SOOO much nicer then cutting/sewing across.

I'm the OP and we "made do" last weekend by folding them up and ironing them where she wanted them. She is now going to take them into a seamstress and have them hemmed. I was just too worried I would ruin them. Thanks for all your opinions!

I don't know a thing about hemming jeans, but just wanted to say that I thought your thread was titled...Sinners- How to hem Jesus. :rotfl2:

Exactly. You can never get the hem to look original unless it is done this way. Because of the way jeans are washed before you buy them, the hem has already faded and you can't recreate that look.

and I thought it was about sewage systems! :rotfl2:

I don't understand this original hem stuff. I may need to get a pair hemmed, but can't envision this! You sew on the pants bottom after cutting some out of the leg? I am not a seamstress at all and just don't get it! :scratchin

lol! I just need to read slower. Maybe if I read slower I would catch half of what I read. One time my friend and I were talking. This is what we said

Alex:OMG!
Me: ?
Alex: My dog just scared the crap out of me, he started barking when I was concentrating.

I was rolling on the floor laughing. I thought he said
My dad just scared the crap out of me, he started barking. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Could not figure out how sewers had anything to do with jeans! I still don't get this original hem stuff. Where do they cut out the length?

Wow, we live in the same state! The state of confusion! :rotfl:
