sew crafty mini sewing machine...help

Hi all!

o.k., so this is probably a dumb question, i accidentally threw away my book on how to use this machine. I can't figure out what the batteries are for. I THOUGHT I was (slowly) sewing my project along and come to find out all it was doing was tearing up my paper, when I saw that i was already frustrated because my hand was aching from turning that stupid knob to "sew" and it wasn't even doing it!

I scanned the instructions but there is nothing about the batteries. Just flip over the machine and you will see a compartment there. Open it up, you will need 4 AA batteries.
Then when you want to sew, press the power button on the front of the machine.

Not that that will really help because no matter what I try, my machine won't sew! It just makes holes in the paper! I gave up a long time ago but maybe you will have better luck!
