I am so bummed, DW and I leave in 2 weeks for our first WDW trip just her and I and I really ruined my big toe. Bone from knuckle to foot fractured from one end to other. Can't put any pressure on it. We are not gonna cancel but not sure what we are going to do. Any advice or suggestions ?

Thanks in Advance Dave

Rent a wheel chair:) You'll still have a blast! Just rent a wheel chair and you can carry all the bags etc... look at the positive :sunny:

Actually, I'd see if an ECV is available somehow. That way it's a little less work than having to wheel yourself. And it should also be a way to carry bags, as well. I'm sorry for the injury, and hope WDW goes well for you.

I did this before-end 2 toes and 2 fractures and a break in my foot near the said toes. :earseek: Hurts like nothing I have ever felt before---well after 2 weeks of walking on it! Anyhow the dr. found out I was going to WDW and automatically gave me a note saying I needed a wheelchair. Use the wheelchair and enjoy yourself. You may need crutches or a cane as well to help with lines. Good luck. :wizard:

Definitely rent a wheelchair before you go. Allearsnet has a list of places to contact. My husband was diagnosed with a condition just two days before we left for a weekend trip. I called and got a manual wheelchair for him. It was waiting at our offsite hotel (although I'm sure onsite Disney wouldn't be a problem) when we arrived. He's 5'6" and 180 pounds. I'm 5' and might top 100 pounds on a good day. Pushing him around for the weekend was not a problem. Once our weekend was over, we left the chair at the front desk of the hotel. Price was extremely reasonable. The chair folded up into the trunk of the car without problems. The chair had a mesh bag on the back that easily held everything we needed.

A couple of hints. Watch out for going downhill. Gets kind of scary. Of course, I did let go of the handles once just for the heck of it. Husband not amused. And you will have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. You will see more, well, personal areas of people than you are used to. They are clueles. Also watch out for cigarettes at your eye level but their waist level. An air horn might not be a bad idea. Just kidding but you get the picture.

Honestly, the wheelchair wasn't that big of a deal. It did give us a whole new appreciation for people who have to do that all the time.

WE have decided that I will be in one of the electric ones. I would get a regular wheel chair but my wife has a bad back, I am a rather large person and I just had my shoulder rebuilt in March and it still has a way to go before it is really healed.

We will be fine, I will take my cane and my post op boot. put a cow catcher on the front of the scooter and go for it. :rotfl:

But really though thanks for your kindness I am sure we will still have a great time.

Dave

Just sending you my true and sincere sympathy. Golly Bob Howdy, that hurts!!

I broke 3 toes when I dropped a drawer on them, then broke them again 3 months later taking a mis-step on the stairs. As if that wasn't pathetic enough, I broke them AGAIN with another mis-step on the same stairs. That time I had to pop two of them back in because the bone came out of the joint. ( :scared1: )

I don't live in that house any more.

Have a fabulous trip! (oops...sorry. Shouldn't say 'trip'. Have a fabulous vacation!)

You: sore shoulder, broken toe

Wife: bad back

I am envisioning the Revolutionary War picture of a soldier carrying the flag, one limping, flag is in tatters, someone has an eye patch! You two will be "walking wounded" on this trip, I sure hope it works out for you.

DH went once with a kidney stone, and he was in pain the whole trip- passed it 3 days after we got back.

If you follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES Board, you will find a list of the places DIS posters have reported good experiences with.

Also, just wanted to mention, a power (or electric) wheelchair is different than a scooter/ECV. You want an ECV. You don't want a power wheelchair.

A power wheelchair is driven with a joystick that controls both the speed and the direction you go. They look easy to drive, but it generally takes at least 2 weeks of practice to get skilled enough to drive one fairly comfortably.

A scooter or ECV is much easier to drive. The speed is controlled with a throttle and you stear with a yoke (sort of like bicycle handlebars). Most people will be comfortable driving one after a few minutes or hours of practice.

It's the ECV that I am hoping to rent, in all honesty I am hoping that I will not need one but that is my pride speaking, I am afraid that I will still need one at that time.

Thanks again Dave

Don't worry about it-- During my trip in June 2004, I tripped and fell half way through the trip, and tore a ligament in my foot. It wasn't pretty! I was depressed at first, but it turned out not to be too bad. DH pushed me in a wheelchair (you can rent them at all parks, where you rent strollers) and it got us to the front of the lines!

I hope you feel better... but don't worry about your trip, you'll still have a great time!

Hang in there:-)

I just wanted to mention that most of the lines are fully wheelchair accessible, so in most cases, wheelchair and ECV users wait in the same lines with everyone else. There are a few attractions where that is not the case, but in most cases, you will be waiting in the regular line.
