My son will be flying for the first time (a school related trip) without me and I was wondering if he can bring his own snacks and drinks (like a bottle of pop) on the plane and also is he able to use his cell phone while in the air? Thanks so much for advice, this is new to us.

HI
I fly all the time so I should be able to help you with this

Yes. he can bring his own soft drinks and snacks with him. I would recommend that he NOT open the Pop before he goes through security because sometimes they dont allow open drinks through. Not all places though so just to be on the safe side

He will NOT be able to use his cell phone in the air. Cell phones must be turned completely off as soon as the Airplane door is closed. He can use it when the plane lands and is Taxiing to the jetway.

Hope this answers your questions

You didn't mention what airline he will be flying but I have flown Northwest, Southwest, and US Air and have had no problems bringing snacks on board. I think most of them expect people to because they don't serve meals anymore. We just put it right in our carry-on bag. He won't be able to use his cell phone while in flight though. They will ask the passengers to turn them off when they are done boarding and he will have to wait until he is off the plane to turn it back on. Hope this helps. I'm sure he will be just fine and you can ask him to call you and let you know everything is okay as soon as he gets off the plane. :flower:

That probably depends on the airline. But I've flown Southwest, Northwest, Usair, United and delta and I have been able to use my cell phone as soon as the plane lands before we deboard.

Thank you so much for your quick answers! I'm not sure yet which airline they are flying on. I'm a little nervous but he is so excited, he probably isnt worried about calling me but I will be anxious to talk to him once he lands. I'll probably have a bunch more questions down the road, thanks for your help.

Sometimes it takes the cellphone a little time to find a signal while still on the plane after it lands, you may want to tell him to watch for that (mine keeps saying "searching"....).

Also, if your cell phone has an airplane feature, you can turn off the phone signal part but leave the phone on. Handy if you want to do things like use a built-in camera or play Bejeweled. :)
