I visited Disney for the second time but it was my first time staying in the resorts. I didn not stay long. The second morning there I was reprimanded by a security agent for breaking an apparent law. I was shocked to be told that I could not fish in the Seven Seas Lagoon. What is a vacation without fishing. My little boy was devestated and my wife was very upset to say the least. Nevertheless, I am never returning to the Disney resorts. Am I the only one who does not find any harm in my actions?

I'm trying my hardest to bite my tongue and not say anything that might make me seem like a jerk, but I'm just wondering, If you were breaking a state law:

A: Why are you angry at Disney for enforcing it like any quality resort would?

B: Why do you think anywhere else in the same state would not follow a state law?

I do not think I was breaking a state law although I cannot confirm that. My thinking is that Disney is a vacation resort just as Wisconsin Dells for instance. I fish all the time there. Once, I fished right under where the little dog jumps across the rocks. That was during this brave animals perfromance. I have never even been appoached. I'm not as angry at Disney as I am dissappoinited. I may go back but I will stay in Orlando.

I can tell you that in MOST states (apparently WI is an exception) the fishing laws alpply to the entire state and "resort" areas are not excepted.

There are ways to fish legally at Disney. However, Disney does not endorse solo fishing since if you eat the fish and get some type of poisioning you would possibly want to sue.

As for a fishing vacation, I can think of LOTS better places then WDW!

I believe all Disney fishing is catch and release and this is the fishing that you do through a guided excursion.

I believe it is against any rules to fish on your own on Disney property possibly due to the reasons stated in the above post. They own the property so they are liable if something happens to you.

Was the CM at least cordial about telling you the rules? I'm sure you were surprised and maybe this accounts for why your so upset but I don't think Disney meant to offend anyone. They just want to make sure guests are aware of the rules to keep them safe so everyone's stay is as magical as it can be.

It's your right to stay where you want to stay but I wouldn't write Disney off for this.

I was not there so I do not know what happened to make the Security Person say something to you about your fishing. Maybe you were fishing in an illegal area, that is, somewhere that was unsafe to either yourself or to others (for example, the place where the big Ferry boats or Water Taxi boats dock/ load/unload passengers). I know that when I was Water Mousing many years ago, I was "talked" to by a Shore Patrol CM. It seems that I was too close to the water skiing area and that was an "illegal" place to drive a Water Mouse boat. Once I was informed of the infraction, I moved my boat immediately. Maybe something like that happened to you.

Please don't write Disney completely off by the actions of one of their employees. I am hoping that they were concerned with your safety when they spoke to you.

Can you picture anyone bringing their fishing equipment to Disney? Have you ever read anything about Disney being a great fishing destination?

I suspect we are being fed a whopper.

I was wondering the same thing Lewis. Fishing is very important in Wisconsin and they have very strict restrictions. Adults have to have a fishing license in their possession when they fish or pay a big fine. This is true even on private lakes much less the Dells!

Wether the original post is true or not, disney actually has some great fishing. Since the entire resort is catch and release, there are quite a few big fish in the Disney waterways. I myself have caught a 6lb large mouth bass while on a paid excursion from port orleans. DW and I are DVC members and have stayed at OKW many times. While at OKW many CM's have told me that at OKW you can fish only where grass meets the water. Meaning you can't fish off the docs or the bridges. I have fished many times at OKW with no problem.

I do not think the OP is pulling anyone's leg. I think they were just unaware of the rules for fishing on Disney's private waterways.

If not, then I think the poster is way off base being PO'ed at WDW. There are plenty of ways to fish "legally".

I think one of the reasons they don't want people fishing from the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon is there are a lot of walkers in that area, and it would be very easy to hit someone with an errant hook. So it's partially a safety issue.

Did the OP ask where they could fish? Or did they just give up and leave? Because you can fish at POR in teh fishing hole, perfect for kids. And you can charter fishing excurions for a reasonable price.
