We will be taking our 1st trip home to the BLT in April. The information says you can not swim at the beach section. Is it because there is no life guard there or because the water in dirty?

I am gonna guess because just about any body of water in Florida has an alligator in it somewhere... :scared1:

:) THere are also multiple posts about amoebas or bacteria in the water that are known for invading sinuses and destroying human tissue.....use your imagination....yeah, I am serious.

Going to have to try to avoid the beach all together then. Thanks for the heads up.

You do not want to swim in any inland body of water in Florida. Between the alligators, snakes and probably the most dangerous bacteria, the water is not safe for humans to swim in.

The lakes are nice to look at but as PP, stay away .

Disney has a no contact policy.

We just came back from BLT and the waterskier fell into the lake quite a few times. I guess he just had to wait there and not 'swim':confused3

That's a new one on me, I have never seen a water skier over there.

I have seen a water skiing competition at DTD but I read that the water is tested by the health department before they let them compete.

We just returned home yesterday. We spent a lot of time looking out the window at the birds flying past and watched a guy skiing with a partial wetsuit (since it was so darn cold down there.) It was this past Sunday morning. We were commenting on how slow the driver was going. We saw him fall about 3 times.

Until about 1995, you could actually go into the water at the resorts that had beaches. They then closed them to wading or swimming. Have heard the bacteria reason and even the alligator reason (yes they do find gators in the lakes), which I assume are at least part of the reason, although I don't recall Disney actually stating a reason when it closed them.

The harmful bacteria and amoebas are much more concentrated near shore than in the deep water were the water skiers fall.

We were at the Grand Floridian tonight and at the marina, they do offer water skiing.

I know that the bacteria and amoeba problem happens in warmer weather so maybe they allow water skiing only in the cooler months?
