Setting up cash account

So, my inlaws are taking their kids and grandkids on a cruise in August, I am the "expert" cruise planner(as none of them have ever been on any cruise- except my family). They booked the cruise and I am tying to give them as much information as I can- however I don't know about having a "cash account" on board. One sister in law has no credit cards/checking acct either(I know that's weird- I don't ask- LOL), how does she set it up when she gets on the ship. She probably won't spend that much, but I know tips will come out, she has 2 kids- 15 and 6. I know they will want some "stuff" too from stores. etc. Any help would be appreciated, so I can let her know. Thanks!

You just have to go and set it up at the desk onbaord. They like to have the accounts cleared when it gets to a certain amount, so depending on the length of your cruise, they might have to go and make payments a couple of times.

So she could just go up to guest services, put $250 down and be done? What happens at the end? Does she go back and get a refund the last morning of the cruise?

I'm not totally sure if you can pre-pay, but she could go and pay off all of the excursions and/or tips, and you can go to Guest Services at any time and put down more cash if she knows that she has spent some money in the shops.

Sorry, I'm not a cash user, either, but I've seen other people going and paying with cash. Just not sure if they'll let you put down extra...

For our 7 day cruise the minimum to open a cash account is $500. I couldn't find the other durations' amounts. Good luck.

You would have to call them to verify but pretty sure you can purchase the onboard gift items with Disney gift cards (so if she didn't want to wait at guest services she could buy the gift cards then use the gifts option to "buy" onboard credit. They also take check so she could get a cashiers check or something like that. (Or just carry cash onboard to pay the balance that she spends at Guest Services.)

She will more than likely just use cash, she doesn't have a checking account even. It's a weird situation. lol

We only do cash on the cruises. The amount you can put down is based on cruise length. In the past, I have gone to Guest Services when I board, put down the max I can and then check at least once a day (usually after dinner). If you get down to a certain dollar amount (can't remember what the amount is) you will get a letter in your stateroom. At the end of the trip if there is any money left (I would not go the morning of disembarking) but go the night before after dinner and and they may just cash you out if there is any left. Remember if you cash out you can not charge to your room, so I usually "cash out" before I head to the stateroom for bed. There is another option but not sure if this would work in your situation but, you can call DCL and put money on your account (you call the number for ordering stateroom gifts) and if there is money left over then it is refunded back to the card or checking/savings account that was used.
Also, I only pay the tips at the end in cash, I never charge our stateroom account.

Cash Account Agreement

You have chosen to settle your account on a cash basis. You may place cash on your account any time during the cruise by visiting the Guest Services Desk on Deck 3, Mid-ship. Your onboard credit limit has been established based upon the length of your sailing.

• 10 days or greater = onboard credit limit of $700.00

your limit at that time which has always been $300 for our 3 and 4 night cruises. Each evening at Guest Services we settle any amounts spent that day. More cash
may be added, as you spend down and pay, to get back up to the $300 if you wish.

Be sure to settle your final cash bill before you disembark. If you try to disembark before doing so on a cash plan, they will send you to Guest Services instead of downstairs
to get your luggage! I've actually seen this embarrassing situation happen to folks on their way out.
