Service Animals and Other Potential Vectors

It's a shame about the minks.
Minks are bred at those farms for their fur. Those whose fur isn't up to standard are killed earlier. The others are bred till they are adults and then killed. Covid or not, those minks were not going to live long.

The law had changed recently in NL and the farms had to close in 2024 anyway. Some won't reopen anymore.

That is good news!

We normally can have dogs in our office (I took my corgi in with me every day) but that has already been decided its a no go when we return to work. At some point they will be able to come back, but since as you said they can't wear a mask or tell us if they feel sick, they are not welcome for now. The service animals will be allowed in as before since they are protected by law.

Edited to add, my company has said anyone who wants to keep working from home for any reason when we return is free to do so for awhile longer - they'll work with you. I'm uncertain what those individuals will choose to do, but if it were me... I'd probably stay home since its a good reason to get to. You can't beat the commute! :)

There is a mink farm (I didn't know about it) about 30-40 minutes from where I live. 200 mink there caught Covid in the last week to two weeks and have since died.

So sad. I don't come from people who could ever afford mink coats (or any other furs for that matter).

I remember 40+ years ago, my mom had a gorgeous fake fur coat. It was $400 back then, so not a cheap imitation Everyone thought it was real, it did look and feel very much like the real thing. She wore it for years. But even fake fur isn't in style now.

The likelihood of a pet actually contracting SARS/Covid is small - and they would have most likely gotten it from their owners. As a vector, yes, they can have virus particulates breathed/coughed on their fur, which can then theoretically be spread to someone else (via close contact/kissing/petting, etc). Being that you should not be petting someone's service animal anyway, and hopefully the family in question will wearing their masks (and not traveling when ill), so I wouldn't worry at all about the animals. Always worry about the people lol ;)

I, for one, will always be more concerned about Facebook-educated "epidemiologists" and message board scientists deciding they can ignore published norms and social rules than I will be worried about service animals who are essential for the medical needs and safety of my fellow human travelers on this ship we call Earth.

Have you seen this:

My dad told me that for the last eight months when people ask what I do (I have a PhD in epidemiology), he no longer has to explain what it means :)

And, of course, I just had to correct my spelling of epidemiology (that bit of the video is totally accurate - stupid spelling).

It's kind of a sad state of affairs when we are relegated to viewing other people, who are each made in God's image, as potential disease vectors.

Each person must choose what to believe. Published norms and social rules change over time. There was once a time in the US when the "experts" all lined up on the side of alcohol prohibition. See below for an interesting article on this:

Unfortunately, not true. Some babies have contracted the virus and died. Don’t think we have all the science yet on how transmissible it is in all age groups.
That's awful! I remember when our newborn son was in NICU almost 25 years ago, one of the newborns had suffered a stroke. So, I guess no one of any age is immune to anything.

Service animals are way less frequent on cruises. I've seen one out of 6 total cruises I've been on. (Actually 2 cruises, but the same service animal/owner pair.)

As for the issue of humans being vectors for disease, the list of infectious diseases with human to human transmission on this earth is quite long, so...:confused3

I know that humans transmit a long list of diseases to one another. And, yet, civilization has flourished and people have thrived as the social creatures that they are.
