Seriously?

Today we had a total power cut at my shop. My poor manager lost all the work she had been doing over the computers, our till locked up, our fire alarm reset itself, we couldn't take cards, all the lights were out making it look like we were shut, every transaction had to be done manually... it was a HUGE pain.

But... seriously? A four hour power cut in this day and age? In a developed country?

Talk about bad luck.

That sounds like fun.

And was it a pre established cut? Or did it randomly happen?

Sometimes if they're destroying a building with explosives, they'll cut the power. I read recently, they found this house full of bomb making equipment, and the safest way to destroy it all was to burn it to the ground, so they cut the power to surrounding houses when they burned it to the ground. If a new neighborhood is going up, I could see them cutting the power while they work at the main.
If this was strictly your building, then I'd be taking a look at the electric bill... Or some one overloaded the circuits or something.

Although it sounds like that might've been a pain for a few hours. My ex worked at Home Depot in South Florida in 05, we had three or four storms that year knock out the power to most the city. Since it's profit time for the stores, they weren't going to stay closed. Each customer had to get walked through the store with an employee (lights were out), brought to each cashier, and every bar code/price entered manually. The registers worked, but they couldn't connect to home office cause no phone lines, so all credit cards had to be done manually.
And this is with a line wrapped around the front of the building. Of people waiting to get in to buy stuff. And least most your customers thought you were closed.

Well, sure, things like that happen occasionally. I don't think it's anything to get all riled up about unless it's happening once a week or so. We've had a lot of construction and underground work done around here. A couple of times a year, the workers will hit something and we'll lose power or have to evacuate when they hit a gas line.

I'm a bit surprised that your place of employment stayed open for the four hours of the power outage if the tills wouldn't open and the fire alarm was going off.

You're really surprised that a power outage lasted that long? When a transformer blows, or there are weather problems, it can take a few hours for the repairs to get done. You realize that real people often have to go to the transformer or the line and make physical repairs, right? It can't all be fixed with the flip of a switch.

I agree that it stinks, I just can't believe someone would be so surprised that this can happen.

Power cuts here are unheard of, which is what made it so alarming. Combine that with the fact that is gets dark early here at the moment and you have a real problem.

Here in Ohio, we had a wind event from Hurricane Ike a few years ago and we had no power for 4 days. Some people had none for a week. It was insane. We lost our roof. 4 hours is nothing. Maybe suggest a generator if there was that much of a loss from a four hour loss.

Really??? What about last month? Or did you just not pay the bill then?

I thought I recently read something silly like this - though it got no attention last time....

and you lived to tell the tale... its 4 hours not 4 days or 4 weeks.. seriously.

I don't want to hear about anyone's little annoying power losses. Until you've gone thru some sort of natural disaster where you have no power, food, or clean water, socks and underwear and there are people who have lost their lives, pets, homes, and vehicles, you have no idea.

When you go without power and basic necessities for over a month and life as you know it is no more, then you can talk.

My apologies. It was not my intention to brush you up the wrong way.

It's all good. No worries, just the idea of going without power conjures up a lot of bad memories.

I forget how good I have it over here. We have zero in the way of natural disasters and, as you guessed, the worst that happens to me is a four hour power cut. I found it annoying (it's why I posted this thread) but it never dawned on me that other posters here must have it so much worse.

I feel like a bit of a so-and-so.

I'm guessing hurricane?

Yeah, OP, I live in the Gulf Coast-during Ike we lost power for three days...and we were one of the lucky ones (my friends down the street were without power for two weeks). They had a news story about a month later and interviewed people who still had NO POWER.

I hope to never go through that again. It was scary enough to hear the wind whipping outside and wondering if your roof was going to fly off, but then you get to sit in the sweltering heat for three days eating Cheez Whiz, crackers and pop tarts. And, like I said, we were the lucky ones. We only had some roof damage and a few uncomfortable days-there were people who lost everything they had and some that lost their lives.

Blimey - I had no idea!
