Seriously....stingrays?

OK, I know this is completely off-topic...but bobsledding dogs = best mental image ever. In particular, I am picturing Jamaican bobsledding dogs...as they likely wouldn't win at the Olympics but would have an awful lot of heart! :rotfl2:

...Now back to your regularly scheduled stingray debate.

The next time you're cruising to Jamaica, here's an excellent excursion designed to have you rolling in laughter all day! :rotfl:

My DD2 works at the local zoo, and she encounters people who obviously don't use their.....logical reasoning skills.

1. Guy tries to smuggle a lorakeet from the lorakeet exhibit under his jacket. When caught by DD, asks if he can buy one. :(

2. Lady lays into DD because DD tells her that she cannot swim with the stingrays at stingray bay---DD had to grab the lady's arm and pull her away from the bay, as the woman was stepping INTO the water, after being told no.

3. Another lady threw a hissy fit because her kids were told they couldn't play on the big whale in the water splash area--just like every other kid there. A few years ago, some kid fell off the whale and was seriously injured (supposedly) and now no one gets to play on it. She had to be escorted off the property by the police, because she was getting violent.

4. During a special event for special needs kids, DD was physically assaulted by a parent when she told the parent that their kid could not climb up the outside of the staircase (at the front of the zoo, there is a staircase that leads to an upstairs area for special events--this kid was climbing outside the railing and DD asked them to please remove their child from the unsafe location). Apparently, she was "stifling" the child and "discriminating" against special needs kids. Had a black eye and a bloody lip. She pressed charges on this one.

5. One guy lost his mind at the same special event, at the giraffes. After DD was cleaned up from the lady above, she left the front area and went to work in the giraffe feeding area. They were allowing the kids to feed the giraffes for free at this event, but only one branch per kid. The guy was pissed his kid didn't get more branches, and started screaming at the lady who was running the feeding area. DD was just working the line--making sure no one was skipping, getting the kids excited, etc--she had nothing to do with what was going on at the head of the line.

He went up behind DD and shoved her--I guess he wanted to get past and he felt she was in the way; she fell over and skinned her hands and knees. Unfortunately for the guy, DD's boyfriend was there with his younger sister (autistic) and his parents--the guy was yanked down the path from the giraffes and got a few "reminders" about treating people with courtesy while the police were summoned. She pressed charges on that one too. :furious:

She did stay and finish her time (this was a volunteer event, btw--she wasn't getting paid to do this.) She wasn't the only one that had problems with parents at the event--people were getting screamed at and worse at the bouncy house area, because they were monitoring the area and not allowing too many kids in, making kids take off shoes, etc.

This all happened in a 2 week period. And these are just the big things--I didn't even count how many times she was cussed at or threatened or the attempted intimidations....what is wrong with people who go to the Jax zoo?

Personally don't understand the desire to swim with dolphins, have stingray encounters, etc. I like snorkeling, scuba diving and things like that but I prefer to observe animals from a distance and feel no desire to get up close and personal with them. Has nothing to do with fear. It's just not an interest. I'm also not into petting zoos, etc. I pet my dog. That's enough for me, lol.

Wow, people are crazy. Who would have thought that type of volunteer position would be potentially dangerous?

My DS was also "kissed" by a stingray in Stingray City in Grand Cayman when he was about 5. He was having a great time, laughing & all of a sudden he screeched. The stingray sucked on his leg and left a bruise. He was so skinny & pale that the guide told him the stingray thought he was a squid. :lmao: I think it scared him more than hurt. The guide told him it happened so rarely that he was extremely lucky! He's almost 13 and still remembers it & tells people how lucky he was to have it happen ::yes::

My DD was only a baby at the time & she really wants to go....and she wants a "kiss" too!

As far as I know... Rays don't have "teeth" per se. They have a sort of ridged crushing plate. I can liken a Ray "Bite" to sticking your hand over a Dyson...

That's exactly what it was...the stingray sucked on his leg....he got his first "hickey" :lmao:

it broke DD's skin - and you should have seen how fast all the suits suddenly appeared at discovery cove when it happened!!
i guess they saw a lawsuit in the making..

first the lifeguards leaped all over themselves to get to her..
then the suits all showed up..

very entertaining...

Any creature can be dangerous when provoked. Steve Irwin provoked a ray. However, his death - a barb in the heart - was still a fluke.

I also did the stingray excursion in Grand Cayman and they don't remove the barbs. It was a wonderful experience.
