Seriously Considering DVC But Have ?

We're considering buying AKL through Disney for several reasons. My question comes down to use year. Right now they're offering us Aug. My concern is that we'll probably travel one of three times a year - April, June or Dec. I'm worried how the Aug use year might affect the April or June trip. It only really comes into play if we have to cancel our trip and we're beyond the 8 month banking window, right?

I'm trying to make sure I've thought through all the possibilities here so if there's something else I haven't thought of and should be taking into consideration I'd love to know it.

Yep, you will not be able to bank points in June if your UY is Aug. If you buy from DVC, you should be able to choose your UY.

Dec would work, you could still bank your points by July 31. We have a Dec UY but it is because that is the first month that I can guarantee when DHs vacation is for the coming year. We usually travel in the Fall so it works for us at 11 months too. Buying direct from Disney you should get 2009 points with no MFs also. They will bank the 2009 points into 2010, giving you double points to use for a while.

Just to add to ToddyLu's info, this applies to Aug, Sep, Oct and Dec UYs only since those UY months are still in their 2009 UY. Also the points are not totally free of MFs. You will not pay any 2009 MFs but you will pay pro-rated 2010 MFs on those 2009 UY points.

As others have mentioned, I would ask for a Dec UY. That would put all of your trips within the time frame that you could still bank points if you had to cancel or even wanted to change your trip and use less points.

With Dec UY, you have until July 31st to bank those points. With August UY, your June trip would be vulnerable.

You really want to have a UY that doesn't have you traveling within the last month or two if you can avoid it. Since you can still choose your UY, I don't think Aug would be the one I would go with.
