Seriously - am I missing something?

Now this is truely not meant to offend anyone - but am I missing something on the DVC members only website that we all keep that member name and password so secret?

I think the site is "nice" but as far as info goes this board rules supreme! - the members only site(the one disney runs) to me is just basic info you could find almost anywhere - it also to me is like online advertisment for DVC.

Now I know that being a DVC owner has its rewards - but that website - to me - isn't one of them.

So I ask again in all seriousnees - Am I missing something? Many of you have so much more experience with DVC that I wonder if I am not utilizing that site to its full potential.

Thanks!

I agree that there are currently no "state secrets" on the site. However, I also don't see that there is a need to broadcast the password and name. They are both readily available to members. When something of interest does appear on the site, like the new VM, the site sometimes runs slow. Why add to the traffic?

I agree that there is not a lot of information on the site. But, I do think there has been some improvement and they do post some things of a more timely nature in the last six months. I also like when they put the VM up at the same time that it mails.

Just like the #800 number for MS should be used by members, I don't see any harm in trying to keep the member only site for members only. If you feel the need to tell a friend so they can access the site, so be it. Posting it on the Internet just doesn't seem necessary.

I agree, it is a nice website, but I don't get the 'password' thing anyway. If it were really suppose to be a secured site they would have passwords for each member.

Perhaps (and I am just guess here) they have plans for a future more improved site. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go in and look at your account, see your points remaining and all current reservations (maybe even a history of your points usage).

But if what they have now is all it is going to be, I see no reason to keep the 'secret' password. I think Disney Vacation Club would be better off encouraging nonmembers to check it out to help them make their decision about purchasing.

Hi.

I agree. While there are no secrets in the DVC website, there is no advantage to broadcasting the password. Also, in the future there may be information which members are given which should be kept to ourselves.

Giving away the password serves no purpose.

Maintaining a huge database of selected passwords costs money, is that something you would like to pay extra dues to support?

I would like to see improvements in the members website, specifically listing the kids activity schedules, kid programs and adult activities for each resort, especially HH and Vero. But I guess there's a $$ to that, but that wouldn't seem too hard.

Menues for Sonya's, Shutter's, and the Green Cabin room would also be nice. Probably the biggest thing would be member's merchandise purchasing options. But alas....

There is another thread right now about certain states not be approved for DVC and they could not get information sent. Maybe it has something to do with that, DVC has to keep a secure site so not to allow information going to non-approved states. Just a guess.

I think there is also a psychological thing about "exclusive" sites, like Disney Club has their site password protected with individual id's/passwords.

Actually, the directory piece of the puzzle is easy - and cheap. That's what I do for a living. Sun and Novell are currently GIVING away their directories - and setting it up and self maintaining THAT is easy. They already have most of what they need in place - that's what they are likely doing to set up member e-mails.

The expensive part is then personalizing the information and adding functionality - especially when you start talking about interfacing with the legacy systems (the reservations system for instance).

However, without part II, part one is pretty useless.

I agree that there isn't much out there currently to protect - and that the information out there would be useful for people exploring DVC membership to help them make a decision. Most of the information on the members only site is publicly available - here or other places. And the username and password are not exactly secure.

That is the ONE thing I wish was possible on the site. As far as the other information being kind of generic...I agree, but the news items etc. and discounts for members are not something that needs to be shared with the general public.

The code to have "DVC Member" imprinted on the Visa card should not be made public either, IMHO. (I'm not sure if membership was confirmed when the cards were issued or not.)

The website is very dated. My DH is a systems administrator/internet programmer/analyst and he just rolled his eyes when I told him there was one password for all 71,000 members. That's not secure.

He also says that it doesn't cost money in terms of a lot of equipment to set up individualized accounts/passwords - it just takes programming in the personal information for each one - that could take time. They might need updated hardware/software to get everyone's info accessible on-line, but I can't see where computer upgrades wouldn't fall under maintaining good customer service.

And regarding dues...I think if I had to pay a few more cents per point to make my info easier to access on the net, I probably would pay for it. This would not be an unnecessary expense in my opinion.

I was going to say that setting up the password and account aspects shouldn't cost enough to even put a blip on dues. They have to have all your basic information in a database already. So what's required? An export of your mailing information (account number, address, maybe use year). Passwords you'd set up for yourself. The II website is a good example of this. They used my existing (non-Disney of course) account number with II and I input verifying info and created my own password.

The problem is...once you have an account and password what is it supposed to unlock? Disney's web-based systems are pretty disappointing (never mind DVC). I think they have bigger fish to fry than giving DVC members access to information they can get by phone.

The new Disneyland web site has a user name and password--and you can customize it with your itinerary, et'c.... It doesn't seem to be so far fetched to do that for DVC...
