Serious Question abt a Kerry bumper sticker

Leave it on your car and add two or three more.

I have a "Regime Change Begins at Home, Dump Bush" sticker on my car. One day, a man in a brown Taurus flew in behind me and started flashing his lights. I slowed down and he pulled up along side me. He was yelling and flailing his arms around. He started giving me the finger and saying "Bush rules you &$%#@&% Commie." I got his plate number and called the police. He was stopped and charged with a misdemeanor. He ended up paying a $50.00 fine plus court costs. The next week, I added a "John Kerry 2004" sticker, a "Dissent is the Highest Form of Patriotism" sticker, a "This Teacher Gives Bush an 'F'” sticker. I figure if it happens again, that's $50.00 that won't make its way to the Bush campaign.

That's HORRIBLE! While I am a Bush supporter, I would never act in such a way to someone for their beliefs or who they support. That's just wrong. I would not remove your bumpersticker for your trip. You have the right to have it there. All those others need to grow up.

A couple of thoughts regarding this thread. This lady is being harrased by people who are rude to anyone who does not agree with their views. Any group, be it political, religious or social will contain a small fringe element that behaves this way. The danger comes when the opposing side sterotypes. In this thread, Bush suppporters have been called ignorant, compared to Nazis and it has been strongly implied that we support violent tactics. In doing this, those posters lower themselves to the same standards as the people who spit on the OP's car.

Living in Austin (a very liberal town), I have been called greedy and heartless by some when they relaized I was conservative. I simply chalked it up to the fringe element and did not judge all those with more liberal beliefs in that light. In the same way, most liberals I know would not judge all Bush supporters by the acts of acts of a few. It is truly sad that there are some posters on this thread who have chosed to stereotype and slam (even going so far as to to lable their slams as non-debatable facts) rather than recoginize that the acts the OP decribes are not stereotypical.

Pixe_dust - I have seen many recounts of the 2000 Florida election, and every one of them showed Bush to be the winner. There may be recounts I haven't seen that have different results, but at the very least the subject is open for debate. Your conclusions are hardly proven "fact".

To the OP: As a conservative I am so sorry that you have had to deal with this. My first inclination would be to keep the sticker where it is and report anyone who harrasses you to the police. However, I would not take a stand to protect your free speach if you think it endangers your family.

Bravo!

I too, am amazed by those who are ranting about how terrible the OP's experience was but then turn and pretty much say the same things to those of the "other side". The only difference is the some folks are braver when they aren't face to face and sitting at a computer.

There are threads on this board that if the same taunts, insults, and accusations that are thrown around regarding politics were used in threads regarding race, gender, or sexual orientation - they would certainly be considered inappropriate and closed.

Robins: I agree, very sad.

I think if I had to think about whether or not I should take a bumper sticker off my car for safety's sake, I would take it off. In principal I would want to leave it on, I would hate to feel that anyone could intimidate me into not voicing my opinion, but for safety reasons it would have to go if I thought it might cause me or my family to be harmed.

Good luck and have a safe trip across country! Good luck in your new home! :wave2:

Don't agree - this thread has people expressing their opinions. No one's attacking anybody. Trust me, I don't like all those idiotic posts (on this board) making fun of Kerry -- but it is the posters' right to say what they think. As long as nobody is infringing upon anybody's right to do that -- what's the problem?

(Harrassment in traffic is a little different - scarier - don't you think?)
