Serious fear of flying...Anyone else? Help!

Ya'll Have me scared just reading this thread..My blood pressure is going through the roof and i am sitting in my office...:scared1:

I Am scared to death to fly...Next year when we go back to disney dh wants to fly...I have never flown before...I am a nervous wreck

When I took my kids for their first flight I wanted to make sure not to pass on my own fear of flying to them. I tried to talk matter of fact about what the noises were and what to expect. We ended up flying on a very cloudy day so there was a good bit of light chop (light turbulence) and the kids loved it. My then 7 year old compared it to being on Dumbo! I'm glad they had a bumpy flight first so that was the "norm" for them on a flight.

Seriously if you do nothing else then surf the forums on the Takingflight.us/forums and just read the questions that other fearful flyers have asked and the answers that the airline pilots and frequent flyers have given.

I went from grounding myself for over a decade to flying over 100,000 miles a year on business and earning elite status on Delta for several years in a row. You CAN overcome the fear of flying if you want to bad enough. There are tools out there to make it happen. Good luck to you. If you need any other help feel free to PM me. :) I've been helping fearful flyers for years!

It is the "we really aren't supposed to be in the air and nothing is 'truly' holding us up" that bothers me.
I read an article a while back about fear of flying. It stated that most people who have a true fear of flying have it for the exact same reason as you. They actually believe that nothing is holding them up, therefore, the airplane 'should' fall to the ground. Many people with this type of fear conquer it by learning why they are incorrect. Once a person learns how flying works, they are less likely to be afraid. I would recommend a detailed discussion with your husband on why planes fly or the "This is your Captain Speaking" book referenced by a previous poster.

I also like "Ask the Pilot" (or similar) at Salon.com.

I'm with you OP (and others) a few years ago, all of a sudden, I have this horrible fear of flying. Even thinking of flying was making me hyperventilate for a while.

We are supposed to fly to Portugal and Spain next month and my DH got me knocked up in the meantime ;) Which means NO XANAX!!

I'm trying VERY hard not to freak out about it!! I'm even thinking of cancelling the trip

I understand how it works, I just hate it.

I got the .25 milligram. It didn't make me sleepy at all, and I am a whimp. Also you can do a trial run. Take on at home and see how it feels.

On a side note, and not directed at you, I don't know why everyone thinks that it is so funny that her hubby flies for a living and yet she is afraid, sometimes that makes it worse, you hear things.

YOu guys can go under profile and see what hubby does. lol

Thanks. I will try it out before we leave.

Is Dramamine a possibility? I think it's safe for pg (check with your ob of course). Buy the regular version, not the non-drowsy, and it will pretty much put you to sleep during the flight.
