My husband, my 15 year old sister, and I are going September 10-17. The only time I have ever been to Disney in September was during the 9/11 tragedy, so I don't think that would be an accurate way to describe an "average" trip. Can anyone tell me what the crowds, weather, etc is like?

Hello fellow New Englander... I hail from Mass... We are going to WDW the 8th-17th of September and it is a wonderful time to go. The weather is still very warm but the crowds are less because everyone has gone back to school.

The tips I would give, take it slow, do a park in the morning, go back to resort if you are staying on property and swim and then go back at night. We do this and it is very helpful to just relax for a few during the heat of the day.

Bring rain ponchos from home, you can find them for less $$ than buying them in Disney. We pack a few of them to take with us just in case of a shower.

Have a magical time..

Crowds are pretty low-although it is usually during the free dining promo-so you really need make reservations if you plan on eating at most of the sit down places. Weather is HOT! Humid and dry. I would recommend getting up early at being at the parks at Rope Drop or as close to opening as possible. Take at break around 1-2 (back to the hotel, swim, rest etc) and return to the parks around 5-6 if you can arrange your schedule to make that work. It usually rains on and off during the day. I would pack cheap rain ponchos just in case.
We have gone every Sept for the past 5 years. We really don't have any other time to compare it with. We LOVE Sept. I don't know if it's because it's the only time we go or if it's because it's awesome! ;)
If you can budget for the Halloween party(MNSSHP) it's well worth the price as well. The fireworks and parade are totally different than anywhere else and they are great! Plus seeing characters in costume is pretty neat too.
I would be glad to answer any other questions if you have them!
Enjoy your trip!

Going also for the first time September 11-18, 2011. We are hoping for less crowds as this is the average for most reviews. I cant wait!!! We normally always go in the summer. I hate the heat but if it means walk ons on rides then we can find ways around the 10000% humidity.

90% of my trips have been in September and i agree with the pp's but would like to add, sometimes it can be humid. And because of MNSSHP make sure you don't schedule MK on the same day as the party bc you will be " kicked out" by 7:00. Also Fantasmic doesn't show every night. So it is an awesome time to go, but be sure to check out the park schedules. On a side note, the MNSSHP is terrific fun for all ages if you can go! Dress up you won't feel weird!

The bolding is mine.

While it's true that the park will close at 7:00 for those without MNSSHP tickets, don't rule out MK on these days. Historically, crowd levels are lower on these days (precisely because of the early closing!).

Fantasmic will be showing every night in Sept. except for 2 nights.

Thanks everyone! We aren't planning on doing MNSSHP, and we ARE doing Fantasmic! All my table service reservations are made. Normally on our trips we spend a portion of the day by the pool and stay late at the parks. We are just hoping the crowds aren't too big!

We have always gone in Sept for Free Dinning. This year when they announced the free Dinning for May 25th to June 4th I moved up our vacation. Big mistake ! Weather was pretty much the same ! Hot as Heck !! but the crowds in Sept are waaaaaaay better ! I dont mind standing in line for a ride in the 100 degree heat for 15 minutes but most of our wait times a few weeks ago were 60 min + ....you will love the weather and crowds in September. Cant wait to go back next September :) Have Fun !!

We've gone several times in September. Crowds are moderate and the weather is still extremely hot and humid. Nighttime temperatures remain quite hot and humid, not like here in New England where it can drop 20 degrees by 9pm.

We've never had an issue with hurricanes but it is still hurricane season. There may be rainy times so bring a poncho and hit the parks anyway - they will be empty. Rain is your friend at WDW!

We will be there at same time best time to come. Great halloween decorations low crowds. Still hot to jump in the pools. Daughter 6 her third time. I lost count at least 10. Beach club here we come.:dance3::dance3:

Be aware that the parks close much earlier in September than during the summer months. Most parks close by 9:00 pm or even earlier (and AK usually closes at 5:00 pm) except for those parks with evening EMHs. If you're planning to do some pool time during the day, this will limit your park time, since the parks close so early.

Regarding the weather, there are two things to be aware of. The weather in September is very similar to August - it can be brutally hot and humid. Also, it's hurricane season, so you're likely to get at least some rain most days. But luckily, rainstorms tend to be pretty short, and they tend to clear out the parks, so that's a good thing! Just bring a good quality poncho with you (not just the cheapie dollar store ponchos, which are pretty flimsy) and you're good to go.

But your crowds should be great that time of year! Hope you have a wonderful time.

Our last two trips were in Sept and this year its sept again..17-24. Cant wait!
We love it in Sept. Have been in march and it was way to crowded.

Rain, rain and rain...lol....but it only last for a really short time...15 mins here and there...it never bothered us at all. We just took the cheap ponchos that we could toss when we left... .89c at walmart.

The lines are great...never more than 30 mins our last trip and once on test track the cm asked us if we wanted to ride again and didnt even have to get off...how great is that. :cool1:

it is very hot still. but we just take water and see lots of shows that are cool inside. its a nice break to just sit in the cool air and watch a show.

You will really have a good time. Its our favorite time to go. I heard November is great also but have never been then.

September is a great time to go to WDW. The crowds are smaller, and the weather is still nice and warm. The only downfall is some of the parks close earlier at this time of the year.

I recommend Typhoon Lagoon at this time of the year.

To add to the OP's line of questioning.....Are touring plans needed for Sept? Most of the days during our trip 10-17,the crowds are 1 thru 4's. Should I follow a plan for most of the day or just wing it cause the crowds are so low it doesn't matter?

This.

We went the 1st full week of September last year. Crowds were great, heat and humidity so very not.

Back when my wife was CM, (mid-90's through 2004), we went to WDW 7-8 times. With the exception of one May trip, we went exclusively in mid-to-late September.

It's a wonderful time to go. I'll echo the other posters concerning the heat & humidity, but it's bearable. We must've lucked out, concerning the rain, as it didn't rain too much and, when it did, it was pretty brief.

The lack of crowds make up for the possiblity of hot and/or rainy weather. It's definitely worth it.

After an 8 year hiatus, we're going back. We'll be there from 9-17 thru 9/24

September is a great time to go. It was my favorite but then I went in November and loved it. The xmas decorations were beautiful, the weather was cool and crowds were low. But we love september too and will be there on the 15th right after our cruise. Bring a rain ponco and have fun. Maybe a personal fan too, LOL!

We're going Sept. 14 - 19th this year and I'm so excited! :cool1: We're doing MNSSHP too.

Last time we went was in Dec. 09 at Christmas, so I know the crowds will be WAY different than then!! As for the weather, I'm preparing for the rain/heat/humidity - although being from Texas and dealing with triple digit heat right now we know how to handle it!

We usually go in September as well and although it is very hot and humid, we have not encountered much rain. (as other posters have stated, it works in your favor anyway). With the lines small to non existent, the shorter hours for September are not really a factor. You can still do most everything you want. I take an extra zip lock bag with me and wet a wash cloth from the room and take it to the parks to wipe our face and neck. It really revives us and it's easy to just re-wet it as needed. This year I also bought one of the hand-held misting fans to take, so may not need the wash cloth. I think you'll love Disney in September! Have a magical trip!:wizard:
