September 8, 2014 - Disney Wonder

Woot! :cool1:

My mom said she will come too!! That makes all the grandparents. Now I am really excited!:yay::dance3::cheer2::yo-yo:
party:party:

Way to go...still working on parts of my family. they can't plan that far in advance...I just say book it and if you change your mind, the deposit is fully refundable.

Hey Steph,
A question for you as a Canadian who has cruised before. In the threads I've been reading (and there is a TON to catch up on for someone new to DIS) I have seen many recommendations to bring $1 bills to tip room service, etc.

Do you bring US cash (and thus lots of $1's)? Would using Loonies or Toonies as tips be less appreciated? I wasn't sure, especially because we are cruising from Vancouver to San Diego.

Nope, no Canadian money especially coins as they won't be able to do much with it except in Vancouver. Yes, bring US cash for tips. Since this will be the last cruise doing Vancouver, they would have to exchange it somewhere, so stick with US money. I tend to never bring Canadian cash along on vacation and try to use only the currency of the country I am visiting. Now, we don't use room service much, so we don't have to bring along a lot of cash for tipping. We tip the recommended amount on the ship (via our shipboard account) and bring a little extra along for baggage handlers and the one or two times we use room service.

Thanks for the advice. US cash it is! :thumbsup2

:cool1::cool1: SIL says they might come. I have booked them rooms just in case (it is getting harder to book them in the same area. I guess the ship is filling up!) I paid their deposit, so the rooms are on permanent hold. This way, we have until May 2014 for them to decide for sure, and if they decide not to come we can either book someone else into these rooms or cancel and have the full deposit applied to the remaining rooms.:thumbsup2

Hi! We will be joining you on this cruise-I'm Janice and will be travelling with my son Trevor. Will be doing the PC cruise after this one also...

DH and I are thinking of doing this as our first cruise with our son. (9 when the cruise happens.) Our plan is to do the cruise, then go to DL for a few days then grab a flight home!

We're actually from Victoria, so if anyone wants insider info and tips, just let me know!

Hi all! I'm Diana and I booked this cruise a few weeks ago while on the Fantasy. This will be my 4th Disney cruise and I'm bringing my friend along who has never cruised. I'm still not 100% sure we'll be cruising this repo. There's a possibility we'll switch to Miami, or PC. I have done the first repo from LA to Vancouver in 2011. My bf and I really enjoyed Victoria and Vancouver. We stayed 3 days post cruise in Vancouver. It's such a beautiful city. I'll be submitting a request for FB too. I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. :)

Stefndoug---we're you on the Sept 28 Pixar cruise? Your screen name sounds familiar... Or maybe you're just a frequent poster on the dis?! Lol!

I'd love some suggestions. We had a few hours in Victoria last year on the Alaska cruise. We took a tour that drove through the city and let us go on our own through Butchart gardens. I've been wanting to go back to Victoria ever since.

The city is so gorgeous. I know I will have a very difficult time planning out my day there. I think I need at least 5 days there. Let me know what you think are must do/sees.

It really depends in what kinds of things you like and how much time you have. Butchart Gardens is a Victoria classic but since you have already gone there, there is also high tea at the Empress Hotel, a horse drawn carriage ride through the city or just a walk through Beacon Hill park. If you like museums, there is the Royal BC museum as a well as the Maritime Museum of BC. If you have children, there is Miniature World as well as a small petting zoo at Beacon Hill park.

I looked up the high tea @ Empress. My husband is gluten intolerant and the website says they can accommodate that. I'm thinking we'll do high tea + carriage ride. Since we dock for a full day, I'm hoping we can visit Butchart gardens again, too.

Is is normally chilly outside in September? We were there in the evening in June and it was very cold and windy. It was so windy that our bus driver said he was very impressed that our captain was able to dock. He said most ships wouldn't dock in that much wind.

I don't see the draw for the high tea, but that is me...can't see myself spending that kind of money for tea LOL. The hotel is nice though...we have stayed there before (travel agent rate).

The miniature museum is right around the corner...it is great. I personally love the observatory, but that isn't walking distance. There is a cool castle (sort of) that is in Victoria, but again, not walking distance. I say, rent a car for a day and drive around and enjoy the the city. Some great parks and even some great places for views. Mt. Douglas is great to get a view of EVERYTHING around.

September is our nice month...I would say it is usually the nicest of the year. Not too hot and usually not to rainy.

Ugh, last June was SO cold here, we were calling it Juneuary! Normal September temperatures average around 18C during the day, dipping down to around 10C at night. (65F during the day to 50F at night) It is usually windy here, especially by the water, you can see always some great kite flying at Clover Point. I would say that in Victoria in September you would want to wear something like jeans, a t-shirt and a light jacket or sweater. Like most Canadians, I believe in layers! :)

High tea at the Empress is more about the experience than the tea. I've done it a few times, my favourite was the time I went there for a "bubble" tea, where they served various champagnes and sparkling wines instead of tea.

There are alternatives for afternoon tea other than the Empress Hotel. I personally love the James Bay Tea Room, it is not far from downtown and it even has a kids tea menu so the little ones can enjoy the experience as well.

There is also Point Ellice House where you can have afternoon tea in the garden and also tour the house and gardens.

If you are going out to Butchart Gardens you can enjoy afternoon tea there.

Be aware that just about everywhere that serves afternoon tea does require reservations.

If you go to Beacon Hill Park, be sure to stop by the Beacon Drive-in and get soft serve ice cream.

Even though it's another boat, I love taking the Harbour Ferry. If I remember correctly, there is one that takes you right to Point Ellice House.

Hiking Mount Doug is lovely, there is the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary as well.

I am spretty sure the castle you are thinking of is Craigdarroch Castle.

We also have one of the oldest Chinatown's in Canada, there is always a bit of a debate about whether Victoria, Vancouver or Nanaimo was around first. We can claim the narrowest street in Canada, Fan Tan Alley. It's less than 1 metre wide, that's a hair under 3 feet for you guys!

Oh, and if you are a geocacher, there are a ton around our fair city!

A really great site for ideas is: 101 ideas of things to do in Victoria, BC.

Hope that gives you some ideas of things to do!

I know it is more than tea...just to cheap to do something like that LOL

Victoria is very nice...just wish it wasn't so expensive to get too from Vancouver. We go to Tofino every year (west side of the island).

I doubt we will be getting off the ship though. This cruise is about enjoying the ship and all things Disney...have I mentioned I am a Disney fan? LOL

Looking forward to meeting everyone and really enjoying the facebook page. Allows a bit more chatting about stuff.
