We were thinking of going right before tickets expire, but will it likely be crowded then, since all the 2020 tickets were extended and it is close to the anniversary? Would we be better off going on weekdays September 23-24?

Every answer you get will be purely speculative as no one knows what the year will do.

At this time, we don't have an official start date to the 50th anniversary celebration, which most likely means, most people booking right now for fall are doing it for after October 1. At this time, I could see the September lull making a comeback this year as schools should be mostly back to in person learning as well as most wanting to plan to be a part of the 50th celebration.

If 50th anniversary celebration plans come out with a pre October start date, that will certainly change.

And yes, weekdays are always best bet for lowest possible crowds.
