Okay, I just now finished reading the posts from today - :chat: :hyper2:
We went out to dinner tonight also. We ate at a little place called Tiajuania Flats. Yum! I am sure everyone is gone by now and in bed or trying to get caught up on the posts now.

They definately are cool. Amazing to see what the little guy looks like before he is born.

I never did the 4D - wish I had (at least the 3D), but I do have a whole small photo album of ultrasound pictures of my little one. At least once a week I was getting a new one - just loved it! :goodvibes

All caught up (finally!). Here is that picture of Buddy --

He's a tiny Springer Spaniel -- only about 75 pounds! Just kidding (about the tiny bit). He is a huge Springer. Both of his parents were big dogs. He is a big baby and misses his mommy, but he loves :love: Bill to death!

Beautiful Puppy, Tracy - but he is a big boy for a Springer. :teeth:

Okay, I know I am back here a dozen pages or so, but...here is a question that Captain Crash brings to mind. He believes (maybe knows logistically) that it is rockier in the front of the ship. I have always thought that I feel it much more on a lower deck and in the rear. The two times that I had a cabin in the front I really never felt anything when I slept. Any thoughts or perspectives here?? :confused3

I got a few minutes here...

... think of a sea-saw ... and levers. If the whole length of a ship moves uniformly up an' down then we have the same "motion" anywhere on the ship. But the waves cut across the bow ... So the bow gets it first and has less relative mass then say the center of the ship. And the ship see-sawa a bit with the waves... and the ship has a slight imcrease in motion at the extreme front and rear. AND of course "slight" on a ship 3 football fields in length can mean a 10'+ swing up and down! Also - for "z" axis pitch being near the base - or point of pivoting in the case of a ship. So the best place to be is low and central... with a veranda if possible for fresh air and sigh line to the horizon (and vomiting) if fighting sea sickness. OK... better not to toss cookies over the side... use the jet toilet so long as you don;t flush while your head is near the toilet rim!

NOw... we know ships have stabilizers - but these little wings do not compensate for vertical pitching... just "rolling". Take a look:

stabil_pockets1.jpg
stabiliser.jpg

So... IMHO being at the extreme front and high on deck 5 is near the worst spot for ships motion. And if we were adjacent, above or below a major walk way and/or disco PLus if we had a athletic deck above us - or something like a basketball deck - then it would be the worst imaginable location next to being in a lifeboat and towed behind the ship. Well, actually it would be worse if we were in a life boat and moments away from being run down IN FRONT of the ship.

So... in deference to folks who tried guaranteed ressies like us... I ran a thread recently which asked for a fresh poll of what folks were assigned plus who they reserved through (DCL or TA) and whether they were CC or 1st timers/non CC. As an unaudited survey it resolved this way on my last summary :

captaincrash said:
So what are the odds - in a totally non-scientific - uncertified - and statistically insignificant way? We're at 1804 viewings and 61 votes or opions reported... and this is getting statistically significant.

Well - if you start in a 12 then the odds of getting a catagory ....

12 = 16.4%
11 = 21.3%
10 = 16.4%
9 = 26.2%
8 = 9.8%
7 = 3.3%
6+= 6.6%

Put another way ... the odds for a veranda or 5+ catagories are 9.9%; and for a window or 3+ catagories = 36.0%; and for an inside cabin that is above a 12 or +1 or 2 catagories = 37.7%. It looks like it is an 83.6% chance for something better than a catagory 12 -or- better than the level at which you reserved. IE - you reserve a catagory 6 guarantee and GET a "6".

ALSO... here is the data if YOU are a repeat customer (Castaway Club) and indicated so...

Cat 12 .... 5 of 10 were CC (50%)
Cat 11 .... 5 of 13 were CC (38.5%)
Cat 10 .... 3 of 10 were CC (30%) split bath
Cat 9 .... 4 of 16 were CC (25%) window
Cat 8 .... 3 of 6 were CC (50%)
Cat 7 .... 1 of 2 were CC (50%) veranda
Cat 6+ ... 0 of 4 were CC ( 0% )

Only 21 of 61 who voted what they were assigned AND admitted they were CC means that among the whole voting group ~ 34.4% were CC members. SO... if any given catagory had more then 34.4% with CC members than this was an above average possibility. IE... in a catagory 9, 10 or 6+ we had a lower than average representation of CC members. While in catagories 12, 11, 8 and 7 we had an above average representation of CC members.

Or put another way.... the 21 CC members seem to have the following probabilities for an cabin assignment.... and the 40 non-CC members enjoy the following probabilities:

Castaway Club Non-Castaway Club

Cat 12 ... 23.8% Cat 12 ... 12.5%
Cat 11 ... 23.8% Cat 11 ... 20.0%
Cat 10 ... 14.3% Cat 10 ... 17.5%
Cat 9 ... 14.3% Cat 9 ... 10.0%
Cat 8 ... 14.3% Cat 8 ... 7.5%
Cat 7 ... 4.8% Cat 7 ... 2.5%
Cat 6+ ... 0% Cat 6+ ...10.0%

Comparing the odds for various cabin catagories broken out for CC and non-CC members shows that for a....

catagory 12 ... a CC member is 11.3% more likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 11 ... a CC member is 3.8% more likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 10 ... a CC member is 3.2% LESS likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 9 ... a CC member is 4.3% LESS likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 8 ... a CC member is 7.2% more likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 7 ... a CC member is 2.3% more likely to get this than non-CC
catagory 6+... a CC member is 100% LESS likely to get this than non-CC

I'm not very impressed by the catagory 12 and 6+ implications for CC members. Of course ... this is all fairly unscientific and more educated guess then science.

At least we now have some developing statisitical significance and "indication" here... and the good news simply is that its' not all that bad. Especially with no one voting they has a BAD cabin assignment. Some posted that they went lateral on their guarantee assignment by buying an upgrade and new location. AND if you're a CC member there is a 76.2% chance of getting better than a catagory 12 assignment. :thumbsup2 And of course, non-CC members can look forward to an 87.5% chance for a catgory 11 or better! :confused3 Loyalty pays....?

I'm still waiting for my guarantee 12 assignment (less than 5 weeks before my embarkation)- and as such - I am hoping DCL will not find a quad cat 12 for me INSIDE the engine room with a coal shovel. We've never booked a guarantee cabin before (that I can recall... sometimes I think I might be having a "senior moment" sometimes). At any rate - with 1800+ visits and 61 responses I think we have a working impression of what goes on. Maybe if we get some interesting changes in the total votes I'll resummarize this - otherwise I think it's time to let this thread fade.

BTW... for giving up cabin location selection I estimate we would save $1100+ if we only get a catagory 11. Which is generally what I think is most likely given we are a party of 4. Even if we get a 12 we save a little $. So - we really don't LOSE. And we booked fairly recently. I would of course be very pleasantly surprised IF we got a window .... or dare I dream ... a veranda. I see no hope for better than a catagory 7 as a CC member. Sigh.... I do wish loyalty paid with DCL... but sadly it does not seem so. :thumbsup2

It would be nice (imagine) if every sailing DCL ran a SPECIAL FREE lottery among repeat patrons (like me) - and the lucky winner got a FREE sailing! But I suspect this is not very likely to happen ... especially if the top tier of cabins are taken by repeat patrons! But it IS a wild eyed notion I thought I'd aire! Just in case a decision maker is looking and feels it is "doable"! Just think of the FREE BUZZ you'd generate !!! That would be way out of porportion to the lost revenue. In fact ... if the promotion brought in 2 new patrons for the 1 given away on an other-wise less than 100% full sailing then it is a net GAIN for the line. And if we booked a cheap cabin then we would have a low dollar payout... and if we booked a high dollar cabin then our payout would be larger! That seems fair to me!!! And you'd give us all something to talk about on the DIS and Cruise Critic! To say nothing of all the FREE MEDIA BUZZ and PARK BUZZ you'd generate ... and the mad scramble of past patrons returning to DCL!!!! :rolleyes: What do ya say????

Cheers everyone - and thank you for your contributions, curiosity and interest.

Bloody Captain pirate: Crash

Ok...

Enuf of that... I had a sleeping toddler on my lap here in the hotel but she's just awakened and we have to run down to the beach (across the street - so not so tough) for the late sun and sunset. My DS and DD are out there now and more or less waiting for us to join them. Then it's off to my FILs' for supper - he's here in Waikiki - and after that we were considering catchin' a $1 movie... FF or ???? Garfield the Cat. Free parking too! How can we pass up a deal like that when the theater and snacks are so good too! :rolleyes1

Okay, everyone. I had to do a little searching because I read about the Rum Factory when I was doing a search on "things to do in St. Thomas" a few days ago. Well, the Rum factory that I had read about is the Cruzan Rum Factory. It is on St. Croix (sister island to St. Thomas). It was on the page of excursions to take while visiting St. Thomas. You can take a trip from St. Thomas to visit the factory and other things on St. Croix. The excursion is probably not possible within the timeframe we are on St. Thomas, but...at least I know I wasn't crazy when I read about a Rum Factory excursion on St. Thomas. Too bad that it wasn't ON St. Thomas! :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

Captain Crash - I needed the Math Alert and the Engineering alert! ;) Of course I expected no less from you! I knew you would know your stuff logistically! I know it makes the most sense that the higher up you are the more you feel the sway, etc. I do always want a midship cabin if I can. But, for some reason the front always "seems" to work better for me than the rear (if I can't get my midship). I tried the lower cabins on other ships and for some reason I just always do better on the upper decks :confused3 I don't know why - and yes, it makes perfect "physics sense" (I made up my own phrase) that the bottom would be better,but... I actually gave up a Cat 10 on deck 2 to go to an 11 on deck 7. I just like that area of the ships more I guess. Maybe it is not a movement issue of the ship, but an issue of how much movement I want to do to get to everything... so my subconscious tells me that is it better! :rotfl2: :rotfl: :lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

I guess so. Captain ran out to see the sun set! Crazy since it is after 1am here in FL. I don't think I can last much longer either. I have been trying to get caught up on the thread, my emails, etc...

So, how are you tonight??

I'm doing great. Just trying to set up a new email account. I had Hotmail but some of the emails that people were sending weren't getting to me. So, I have one at Yahoo now. What a pain!

I got prices today from my TA on the Med. cruise next year! Ouch!! Hey, where is my FL Res Rate when I need it?? No such thing I was told on that route. Not much left on the ship either! Oh, well. I will just have to see what other kind of deals I get on the ship. We just have to book something while on the ship. TA told me that I can actually book it through her while on the ship and still get the "deal" and I wouldn't have to transfer it when I get off the ship! Oh, well, we'll see....

I have Yahoo as my back-up, but I use my roadrunner (cable) for most of my email. I had to go through all that set-up not too long ago when I got my new computer...

Well, that is the great thing. We don't have to worry about the air fare because we are going to use our frequent flyer miles. But, still...the price right now is just a little too steep. But, I know we can find better. I'm out searching the net now. We are also thinking of doing a British Isle Cruise out of England. I have been wanting to go to England and Scotland. I have been to Ireland but I would love to go back. I was too young to enjoy the surroundings. Mostly I just enjoyed the pubs. :lmao: :lmao:

I would have loved the stop in Italy but it was way more points than what we have.

Our DS got engaged and we're saving the points to surprise them with a honeymoon cruise.

Well, I must be going now. :cloud9: My insomnia is starting to wain and I am ready to get some shut eye now. (They really need a yawning smilie!) Morning is going to come awful early for me. :sunny: Nice talking to you MommaLuvsDis!

Get yourself a RELIEF BAND (or several) if you have any serious vulnerability to sea sickness. The discomfort and subsequent loss of a vacation day or portion thereof is not worth the small expense of a relief band. THese devices use an electrical charge similar to a STIM device to interrupt the accupressure point under your wrist. It is very effective for moderate motion with my otherwise vulnerable spouse. We actually have 3 bands and always carry spare batteries.

If you have any doubt about their usefulness or even the need - then get them from the Sharper Image as you can always return them within 60 days - even if used as you can complain they did not work properly for you - which may be the truth too. :rolleyes: And if it's any consolation - SI has them clearancing in some stores. I hope they bring in the newer models though as these devices really are effective!

And I would recommend you buy the model with replacable batteries - as there is a cheaper disposable model too. THat one is not worth the savings.

200..jpg
howitworks.gif

These typically cost about $55-60 on ebay or the web (Have NOT checked recently) ... and it used to be $80 in SI but I think they are clearancing them at $55-60 now... so that is where you want to get them if not inconvenient. Especially with as much as time and fuel costs now a days. But remember - you can return them to SI if you don't use them or are not satisfied how they performed for you. Within 60 days with a receipt works generally.

Hope this helps U and any others thinkin' the same thing....

My spouse wants to render a decision later tonight - we're under the gun to clean up after the beach and run to her Dad's for dinner.

I am thinkin' it's either her and Julianna (minus me and the young one) or all 4 of us most likely. Especially since Kalea is free. I for one would go just for the boat ride and to watch from the boat... and maybe look around underwater while holding on to the edge of the boat! I really cannot swim well. But a life preserver is probably a near guarantee I won't drown too. OK... more over nite as we're in a further time zone then you.

The prices for the Med cruise are steep enough but when you add in airfare! WOW!

I'm here waiting for my spouse to finish dressing for dinner ;) so I thought I'd post a bit...

... yeah... we've recently decided we're gonna do Italy next year (july/august) with our expanded family. Plus we're back to quibbling over a cruise to add to it again. One faction wants Crystal or Seabourne (they make money but save a modest ratio of it) while another faction in the family wants low end like NCL, CCL or RCCL and we save out of ratio with decent/fair income. My point being that we could do Crystal - and we would not want to pay Seabourne rates... and this also means 2/3rd of us do not want to pay DCL rates too. And 1/3rd of us would love to do DCL including us! So it's a strange patchwork of disagreement - the same sort of chaos we had 2 years ago when we were trying to do a MED cruise with Italy for 2005.

So... we're at the point of finalizing the dates and beginning the jostling for which cruise line we'll do. Last time we settled on Radission SS - but they're renamed and reorgnaized into Regent... and doing different things now.

AND as for air fares - I think 80% of us are flying on frequent flyer miles - so we're all looking at the 330 day advance booking window that is emerging for July/August of 2006.

OK... gotta run to dinner now...
