Sept. 23, 2012 Pacific Coast - Wonder Cruise

Hi Everyone! I am new to the disboards and this will be our first cruise - so excited! We are definitely not new to Disney though - California natives who live at Disneyland it seems, were married at the Disneyland Hotel and have done Disneyworld multiple times.

:welcome:

There are tons of locals on this cruise! We also live in So Cal, and got married at the Pacific Pier (when it was the Disneyland Pacific) Hotel. The lawn and gazebo where we got married is now a waterslide. lol!

The second FE is still open. MadHatterMom2 is running it. And I'm running a scavenger hunt as well. Once you have ten posts you can PM me if you'd like to join. It will be questions that you have to go around the ship to find answers for, and pictures you need to take, puzzles to solve. There will be some small (read 99 cent store!) prizes as well. Open to all, teams of families or ad hoc groups. Should be fun! I'll pass out the sheets at the meet on Sunday and you'll have a day or so to find the answers. I'll think about when/where we can meet to finish.

Dh and I are in for a scavenger hunt, I can't pm yet since I'm only at 4.
Thanks - Wendy

I haven't told my daughter yet. I think we are going to wait and let the girls figure it out when we get there. :-)

Thanks for all the info! We are super excited. I am pulling my kids from school for the trip but they have a 4 day week. I feel mildly guilty but think I will get over it!

Is everyone doing excursions in SF and SD or are you all doing your own thing? I think because we know each city well we are just going to wing it and not pay for a trip we could take on our own later or do in a cheaper way. Hopefully my husband will be able to drive to SF and meet us for a day of sightseeing in between work!

Happy Friday to everyone. We are in our third straight day of 100 degree temps and all I can think about is sitting on the deck of the Wonder having a cold drink and watching my dd swim in the pool:cool1:

Just bought my FE on ETSY :cool1: yes I am not crafty but it's so cute! Anyone else have a two year old going to the nursery? I would like to plan her time in there when other two year olds will be there :)

My two year old will be there! Totally not sure if he will tolerate it but we are going to try. He will be three a month after the cruise, is super verbal and used to hanging with his older brothers so I am a little nervous about how this is going to go!

I will be cruising with my three little boys, my parents, my sister and her sig.other. Sadly my husband starts a new job that month and cannot come with us.

We would love to do the FE if I am able (I am sure there is a min post but I am pretty good at chatting lol) and would love more information if anyone wouldn't mind sharing? We will be in three rooms.

Yay for finding this group!

I will add you to the FE list #2. I need the names of everyone in your party, ages (just for the kids) and the respective room numbers. I will be putting the FE list into a Word doc soon so I can just PM or email everyone. For now, just post to me on this thread.

Thanks and welcome aboard!

Just wanted to let everyone know (especially those who have not been), that we went to DCA and experienced Cars Land for the very first time yesterday. It is very cool. We got in line at opening (8:00) and got Fast Passes for Radiator Springs Racers. FYI, I'm told the Fast Passes are almost always sold out by 9:30-10:00. Then, we went on Luigi's Flying Tires (20 Min. wait). We went on Mater's Junkyard Jamboree around 2:00 and the wait was only 10 min.

All the rides are really fun - our favorite was RSR - but they were all great. It's fun to go on a new ride, especially for those of us locals who've been on everything a million times! If anyone has questions about Cars Land, let me know.

On another note, a friend of mine who is a major Disney freak (I mean that in the nicest possible way!) and follows these boards religiously, says that the rumor is John Lasseter (Chief Creative Officer of Pixar) is going to be on ONE of the Pixar cruises. Just a rumor, mind you, but pretty cool nonetheless.

Anyway, that's all I have for now. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Thanks for letting us participate. We do not have room numbers yet as we are going GTY so not sure if that matters?

We are in three rooms

Clyde (celebrating his 60th birthday!) and Sharon in one room
Katie and Greg in one room
and then myself (Jennie) and three boys in the other. They are Aidan (will have just turned 8), Dylan (will have just turned 6) and Ben (a couple weeks away from 3). We are celebrating lots of birthdays - such a great reason to cruise!

I have some quick questions since we are new to cruising if someone does not mind helping me out!

I am confused on dress code for dinner. It says no tank tops - I wear a lot of shirts that are dresses but are thin sleeves,etc... Is that not ok? I really don't think I own any dresses or shirts with sleeves!

Also can someone explain formal/semi formal night to me? Do we really have to wear formal dresses? What is semi formal? And what do the kids need to wear those nights? Ahh we are going to be the lost family in the corner!

Good thing you asked here on the meet thread and not on the larger forum, as this can be a very hot topic with strong feelings on both sides of the issue. (Seriously! Do a search on formal night in the overall forum.)

On formal and semi-formal nights, DCL requests that men wear a tux or suit, and women wear a formal gown or semi formal/cocktail gown respectively. Same for kids. That said, they don't enforce it, and you will see people in everything from a full tux and floor length gown to jeans and a t-shirt. Some on the dress up side say it ruins the experience for them to see people in regular clothes on formal night, and the people who don't want to dress up should get room service or eat at the buffet on formal night. Some who don't dress up say they're on vacation and they don't want to have to dress up.

I've always done the full formal gown on formal night and a cocktail gown on semi-formal night and made my DH bring a tux AND suit, much to his dismay, just because I rarely get a chance to dress up like that and I always found it fun. Plus, that's when they have the ship backdrop out and its nice to get a formal portrait in front of it. But I've never cared what others were wearing, outside my own family. We're all on vacation, and we all deserve to have the experience that's best for us. This cruise, I'm toning it down. I've had some health issues for the last couple of years that make sitting very uncomfortable, particularly if I'm wearing anything restrictive, and I recently injured my Achilles tendon, so heels are completely out for me. So for formal night, I'm bringing a sleeveless pants outfit that I've worn to semi-formal night on a previous cruise. And for semi, I'm bringing a dress that I've worn to weddings. Bonus is that they're both that flowy material that doesn't wrinkle, so I can roll them up in my suitcase and skip the garment bag. DH is delighted that I'm only making him bring his suit and no tux for formal/semi/Palo, but he's wondering why, when we don't have to fly, I'm suddenly okay with not bringing two extra bags. lol!

My girls will wear what they usually wear, fancy dresses. I hit up consignment shops and thrift stores and I can usually find great, fancy dresses that look brand new. I used to go to a Jessica McClintock outlet store in So Cal, but it closed last year. :(

When they say no tank tops, they mean like actual tank tops, not sleeveless dresses. If you have dressy tops with sheer sleeves, you'll be fine. if you want to go full on formal, it would be a tux for the men and boys, a floor length gown for adult women and teen girls, and a similar type dress for little girls. For semi formal, a suit for men and boys, and a cocktail dress for women and teen girls, a less formal dress for little girls. I've always gotten flower girl dresses for my girls. A lot of little girls also wear their princess dresses for formal or semi.

The only time they really enforce it is for Palo. They will not allow shorts or jeans, and they will turn you away. For men, they must wear either a jacket or a tie. Women should wear a nice dress or pantsuit. Dress like you would to go to a fancy restaurant for date night.

And this is all US standards. It's also completely appropriate to wear formal attire from outside the US such as a kilt or sari.

But as I said, it's up to you how far you want to take it and whatever you decide about formal and semi-formal, you will see people dressed similarly to you. So have fun with it!

Haha! That's where ALL my FE's are from too!!!

The only excursion I have is my own to have lunch at Rockin Baja Lobster in downtown San Diego. If you have never been they have the most amazing lobster/ shrimp buckets.
In San Fran I may do Fire truck excursion. I have been to San Fran but never over Golden Gate Bridge. Ensenada will probably stay onboard. However it's a great place for a massage. I have been there 10 times all excursions are great, but with a two year old I think I will stay onboard. I do plan to get off the ship and go to the stores right outside to get some vanilla.

My plans are to see if I can find some vanilla beans. I make my own vanilla extract, and I like the Mexican beans the best. They're really expensive in the US, even wholesale, so I want to see if I can find some at a more reasonable price in Ensenada. It just occurred to me to wonder if I can bring them back into the US. I'll have to check with Customs.

My DH wants to get some good fish tacos, so we'll also be looking for those. And a trip to Ensenada isn't complete without visiting the original Hussong's Cantina. I haven't been to Ensenada since I was a kid, so I bet it's changed a lot since then.

We just booked last week! Nothing like a last minute cruise. I am looking forward to cruising the west coast.

We love fish tacos too. My husband found a place that he went to years ago with my Dad in Ensenada from looking at Google Maps. It is right by the fish market. Our plans are Tacos and Hussongs! Mexican vanilla is fabulous!

Excited to cruise in just 6 weeks!

My daughter is in love with babies so I hope that gets her to go. She does go to a daycare everyday but the problem is she has been going since 3 months. I find if its strangers she does not do as well.

Today I bought her a Pillow on Etsy for autographs! I never knew this existed!! You can take the pillow to the front desk and all the characters will sign it. I thought it would be a great souvenir.

Only 6 weeks to go? Seriously? I better get moving on finishing up my FE gifts!
Welcome aboard to all the recently booked!

I am slightly worried how my little guy will do as well. I work from home so heis typically with me. He does have a babysitter twice a week but seriously he LOVES her to pieces yet still cries when they leave together every single time! He is also really used to being with his older brothers and might flip if they separate. He is by far the most verbal "mature" 2 year old I have had out of the three!
