I almost always arrange my own excursions in ports. They end up being much less expensive, with fewer people, and give us a lot more flexibility. I know I run the risk of being left behind if there are serious problems
, so I plan in plenty of leeway and thoroughly investigate before-hand so that we only deal with reputable vendors.
Since we're thinking about a catamaran and snorkeling trip in Tortola, I contacted Kuralu Catamaran Charters, which was recommended on the CC boards. They told me that they don't start sailing again for the season until Oct.
Disney offers two options:
Catamaran Sail and Snorkel (5.5-6 hours, $89 each) - "Board a spacious sailing catamaran for a scenic sail along the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Sail upwind passing several small islands such as Peter, Salt and Cooper. Your yacht anchors off one of these islands where Guests can take the plunge into the stunning azure sea for swimming and snorkeling. After approximately 40 minutes at your first stop, board your catamaran once more and set a course for another picturesque island where you will have further time for swimming and snorkeling, or simply relax and soak up the sun onboard. Sip on a rum or fruit punch as the crew prepares a delicious lunch for you. Afterwards, dive in for one last swim before taking in the sights once more before you set sail back to Road Town."
Virgin Island Sail Snorkel and Beach Adventure (4 hours, $59 each) - "Sailing between the many islands is a highlight of a visit to Tortola. A large sailing catamaran cruises the waters to an outer island where you can swim and snorkel before relocating to a beautiful beach. Board a sailing catamaran at the cruise ship pier and enjoy an exhilarating sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to one of the surrounding islands, Norman Island, the reputed setting of "Treasure Island" in the novel of the same name. Snorkel and swim from the catamaran over a tropical reef before re-boarding the catamaran and sailing onto a nearby beach where you can swim, snorkel or wander along the shoreline looking out at the many islands in the archipelago which forms the British Virgin Islands. On the return sail, enjoy the history and geography of this historic waterway as you retrace the paths of Columbus, Drake, Kid and the many pirates which once sailed these waters."
Has anyone done either of these in Tortola? We went on a Red Sail cat & snorkel in St. Kitts and had a fantastic time, so our expectations are high!
