It was a dark and stormy day, the Friday before our cruise. We had awoken to a torrential downpour that threatened to spoil our last possible day of sightseeing in Barcelona. We dressed, ate breakfast, did some packing, and worried about what we might be missing. Then, suddenly, the rain stopped!
We hurriedly got ready and went out, catching the HOHO bus, and going most of the way round, until we got to the Barri Gothic. We wandered around there, then visited the Cathedral - and were about to leave when the heavens opened again, and we were trapped there. We lit a candle for the success of our voyage, and the rain stopped again!
We learned later that one of the subway lines was flooded at Arc de Triomf, trapping two trains. Rescue workers had to evacuate the passengers to the surface. The news carried reports of vicious hail storms inland. And a few days before, there had been reports of two Category 4 hurricanes in the Atlantic basin at the same time a rare and ominous development.
We began to wonder if this portended bad things. Would the Magic even be able to make it to Barcelona, or would it be diverted?
So we dropped off to sleep with mixed emotions - eagerness and concern. My dreams were troubled, cycling between euphoria and dread, then back again.
We awoke to heavy, overcast skies. We got up, showered, dressed, ate breakfast. Then, at the appointed time, the taxi arrived. We closed the apartment where we had been staying, the Lady Jay and I put our bags in the cab, and headed for the port.
Worries ran through my head as we rounded the statue of Columbus. Would we be sailing today? Would the trip be as good as we hoped? I opened the window to get some air.
Then, faintly, in the distance, I heard something. I wasn't quite sure what it was - then I knew:
"Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me..."
I was astounded! Over all the noise of Barcelona traffic, there was no mistaking it:
"We pillage and plunder, and rifle and loot,
Drink up me hearties, Yo Ho!"
Then we rounded the last bend, and there it was: The Disney Magic!
And I stopped worrying. I grasped Lady Jay's hand, and smiled. All was well. We were headed to sea.
