Sensitive teeth - HELP

I went to the dentist last week because I had a sharp/quick pain in a lower left tooth when I chew there. The pain/discomfort is only - and only sometimes - when I chew on that side and hit that spot just right.

I thought I had a cavity but after a thorough exam and x-rays he said I have sensitivity due to teeth clenching and my bite shifting over time. He did some minor grinding to smooth out the problem spot but it is still hurting when I chew there! I called the office but he is on vacation this week. I am using Sensodyne toothpaste but that doesn't help either.

Have you ever had this problem? Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't have that particular issue, but I also have sensitive teeth. If I use anything other than sensodyne, my teeth hurt. They are sensitive to hot, cold and also sugar! Sometimes if I breathe into my mouth in a weird way, the cold air will hurt. But other times I'm just fine!

I don't have any trouble with hot, cold or sweet. Just when I bite down (sometimes) on that one spot. It is driving me nuts. :headache:

Actually, I lied. I guess I do have that issue once in a great while. I'll just be eating something and it'll hurt for a while in a particular spot....but then it stops hurting later. My teeth are fine, no cavities, etc. It is definitely annoying!

How long have you been using the Sensodyne? I know it took me about 4 weeks before it helped. Now I use it for several months and then go off it for several months... repeating this.

Believe it or not, it could be a cracked tooth. I had the same problem start up a few months ago, and my dr did the same thing - grinded the tooth down (I also have sensitive teeth and grind them at night.) but the pain only went away temporarily. Turns out I have a hairline crack in my tooth, and need a crown!

There is this new mouthwash called Act Renewal. It is amazing! It restores minerals to soft spots, kills bacteria and freshens breath. I have sensitive teeth and this made all the difference. I would recommend it if you're ready to try something new. I hope that helps!

After you brush your teeth, try using a small dot of Sensodyne on the area which is giving you the problems. Don't rinse it, just leave it and it will help the effected area. The more you use Sensodyne the more it will help.

I've only been using Sensodyne for about a week.

The dentist actually said there is no crack in the tooth. OMG - I hope he didn't miss anything! I was just so relieved when he said that I didn't have a cavity or anything. I thought the grinding he did would take care of the problem but it didn't at all.

And about the grinding the dentists do - that can't be good to grind away the tooth, can it? :confused3

I have an appointment on May 5 to get my teeth cleaned and then the dentist comes in to check so I'll get to talk to him then.

Sensodyne is amazing! however i have been having serious sensitivity issues because i had to stop using sensodyne since it has gluten in it and i am allergic. So if anyone has other suggestions for sensitive toothpastes I am desperate!

Thanks guys, really great suggestions!

Oh, thank you so much. I actually thought Sensodyne made a rinse but I couldn't find it. I will DEFINITELY try Act Renewal.

I'll try that, too!

I have been clenching my teeth in my sleep to the point that sometimes I wake myself up (ouch). That can lead to serious gum problems as well, so I got a custom made mouth guard from my dentist - it was just under $200 ( that's a lot for me! ), but I was tired of my mouth hurting all the time. The combination of the mouth guard and toothpaste for sensitive teeth has taken care of the problem.

If you get a mouth guard and have a dog, put the mouth guard in your medicine cabinet or some place high up during the day. My dentist told me that her husband has lost two to their dog, who thinks a mouth guard is a great chew toy.

I understand, at least a little, with how you feel. I had a pain in one of my teeth and I freaked out because I thought it must be a cavity(I've never had a cavity oddly enough). I went to the dentist and nothing was wrong with any of my teeth. My dentist actually recommended the Act Renewal mouthwash and I felt improvement within days. So not only did it help with the sensitivity but it made this soft spot on my tooth stronger. I really hope it has the same result for you.

It's fine. I actually worked for a dentist for a long time, and it's not that big of a deal. They usually don't grind it down that much, and if they do, they know it's because whatever is bothering you will actually lead to a crown.

Your dr probably covered the cracked tooth thing. Mine couldn't take an xray because I'm pregnant, so it was easy to miss, even with the bluelight. If you had an xray done, they should be able to tell easier if it's cracked or not.

I just had to laugh - this sounds like a commercial! Do you work for the company!!!? :rotfl2:

Two things that i hope will hope those in need.

1) There is a perscription paste that does wonders. A little pricey, but totally worth it if things are really bad.

2) Be sure not to rinse after brushing. Reduces the effect of the active ingredient.

Ugh, I feel your pain :headache: . My sensitive teeth drive me nuts! I just found a new product at the grocery store. It's called Tooth Desensitizer by GUM. You paint it on your teeth once every 3 or 6 months to help reduce sensitivity. I haven't used it yet since I broke my wrist right after I bought it  . I'm hoping to have good results, but I'm not holding my breath. Here's a link

Thanks - it makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only one. I can't wait to get some of the Act Renewal mouthwash tomorrow.

It totally does sound like a commercial! hahahaha. Maybe I should read over my posts before I post them so I don't come off sounding like I'm selling a product.
