Sending money in bereavement card

I'm going to go with "yes, it is regional". There's nothing wrong with doing it, I'm all for friends and family supporting one another in every way. But in my location and cultural setting, cash in a card is unheard of. When my Ddad passed away several years ago, one of his distant cousins from "away" sent a card with cash and a note to "have a tree planted" in his honour. My Dmom was quite taken aback as she'd never seen anything like it. We all wondered why the person didn't just send flowers? Not sure what DMom did with the cash but honestly, if it had been a cheque she would NOT have cashed it.

Most people these days do designate a charity. Whether it means much to them or not, it's very promoted at the funeral homes to do so. If the bereaved family is someone I know very well though, I still will send flowers instead (if I know they would be comforted by them).
