Okay, so in September my dad and I decided we would buy DVC so we bought 300 points and banked them. In November I booked our family vacation at AKV 2 bedroom villa June 11-20 (attendees include, me, mom, dad, sister, my best friend and his sister) So come December my dad is having difficulty breathing, goes to the doctor a few times and on March 3 they discover it's lung cancer. Well my dad asks his doctor about still being able to go to Florida since we live in Texas and it's far.... Doctor says we will see. So about a month ago the doctor gives my dad the okay to go (says we will make appointments around the trip. Well about a week later dad gets pneumonia and is in the hospital for 2 weeks, gets released on and iv and oxygen 24/7 well this brings me to today, he's not feeling well but still wants to go. I think he may be pushing it but it's his vacation too. I guess I just need help coping with the fact that he will be a few states away from his hospital (MD Anderson). Has anyone had to deal with going to the hospital while on vacation (hoping it doesn't happen but just in case I kinda want to know your experience? I'm not going to try and convince him otherwise because he has been looking forward to this for a while. I guess I will try convince myself everything will be okay. I need some pixiedust to sprinkle on him and hope he feels okay while there. I don't think there is anything else I can do, I rented a scooter and talked with people in the parks about storage for extra oxygen hmm I think I need to stop worrying. Sorry for the drawn out post lol I guess my whole point was has anyone dealt with Florida Hospitals?? the end. lol

Mom was in Celebration Hospital with pneumonia during our June 2006 trip. She got wonderful care, and liked her docter there better than her doctor here in Seguin, although I don't think you can beat MD Anderson for your dad's condition. :grouphug:

We did have a long wait in the emergency room, though. It was packed, and they were at least checking people pretty quickly and getting the most serious cases in ASAP.

Can't answer your post, but sure sending lots of thoughts and prayers out your way. :flower3:

Relax and have a wonderful time. It will be the best "medicine" for your DD. DH's uncle had lung cancer and several times, he made the comment that he just wanted to be treated normal and do normal things. FWIW, plan ahead and know your options, but do the things you always do! You may have to take some breaks along the way, but I'm sure it will be a great trip for all of you!

Wishing you the very best.

I wish you the very best in this difficult situation. Maybe it will turn out to be the trip of a lifetime - in a good way.

Here's some pixie dust for you....

I have been to the Celebration Hospital six times in 7 years during my Disney Trips due to my son.He has been to Disney since he was 7months old with his silly self:yay: . I have never had a problem with the Hospital. I was very nervous coming from New York but again ,I had no problem with the Hospital .I hope your dad is feeling better . When you think about it we go to Disney to forget all of our problems There is nothing that will make him feel better than being at Disney for me it gives me inner peace that cant be explained ....... cherish the time there and get a group hug :grouphug: going. your dad will love it

I wish you have the best vacation ever! I think you are getting good advice about the nearby to WDW hospitals. That he will get good care. Of course, we all hope and pray that you don't have to use them!

thanks everyone. I hope everything goes well.. I'm just a worry wart I think I inherited it from my mom. but thanks for the goos wishes.

Nothing worse than lung cancer. Best wishes to your family.

Well, actually going up, but concerning you, nonetheless.

Hope your family has a wonderful time, with no need to deal with the Florida hospitals. Judging from your post, your dad will want to be treated as normally as possible, under the circumstances. Don't "hover" unless you just have to.

God bless.

There is still hope with lung cancer. Don't take the hope away! There are worse cancers (like pancreas cancer) in terms of death rate.

I've also spent time in Celebration hospital with my mom. We took her there in 2001 after she fell in the handicap part of the MGM parking lot. (Watch out for those concrete markers in front of each parking spot, they line up nicely with the door of the car next to them.) Anyway, we got there probably by 10 pm and it was hours and hours before anyone looked at her dislocated shoulder. She said the pain was worse than any of her childbirths. They ended up keeping her overnight and finally had to take her into surgery the next day to put her under while they put the shoulder back in place.

The hosptial did fix her. It just took hours longer than it should have. There were people everywhere in Emergency and I didn't see any rhyme or reason as to who got service and who didn't. Several groups of people came in and when they heard how many hours I'd been in the waiting room, they left to go elsewhere.

In other words, the treatment was fine but the ER service was horrible. As long as you can avoid ER, it is probably a fine hospital.

Just wanted you to know, my mom beat lung cancer 10 years ago and is a proud DVC member. There is hope :)

You know that song....."Making Memories"
Well, Hope your trip is filled with wonderful times to remember always!

I will say a special prayer for your dad. I lost my dad to COPD, and my mom to lung cancer. The thing with my mom is that she didn't go to the doctor. By the time we found out (she lived in a different state), it was too late. The doctor said if she had come in sooner, he could have helped her. I am hoping that your dad caught it in time and can be helped. God bless your family and I hope your dad has the time of his life.
