I am politically independant..have voted for both parties in my time..
I have the Hearings on in the background and I have to say I find Barbara Boxer VERY annoying!!!!

Going on and on really makes you wonder how Congress gets anything done...

Fortunately, Congress gets very little done. It'd scare me if they actually started doing something of substance.

Senator Boxer was wonderful yesterday. She called Condi a liar to her face and Condi just gave her stupid stare. Condi is not up to being Sec. of State and will just further alienate our former allies.

I am so glad that there is a brave person like Senator Boxer in the US Senate to call people like Condi a liar when it is appropriate.

Condi should have jumped across at Boxer and slapped her silly.

Or maybe being civil in a public hearing is the way to go, instead of calling people a liar on national T.V.

Condi lied about the reasons the US went into Iraq and Senator Boxer called her on it. Come on, it is clear Bush and Condi lied about WMDs and now want to pretend that WMDs were not the reason the US invaded Iraq.

Here is a great site for thanking patrioits like Senator Boxer. See http://thankyoupatriot.com/

Is there really anything "brave" about partisan politics?

Wether or not the President, Condi, or anyone else lied intentionally, "lied" because of bad information, or were "misinformed"; it does not give cart blanc for partisan politcal attacks, intended for the sole purpose of smearing a political opponent.

If Boxer has undisputable proof of "lying" to the House, the Senate, adn the American people, let her start the criminal proceedings.

That would be a brave move to make, not tossing accusations that she knows won't be answered in a pissing match on international television.

I am also an independent (former libertarian) and I watched a little of that. Ms. Boxer came across as classless and almost envious. It was laughable.

I don't like Bush. But I like Condi Rice. And I think she handled the entire situation with grace and dignity.

Personally, I agree with jrydberg. It'd be kinda scary if they actually *did* stuff in Congress.

jellymanoffspring - Nice to meet another independent. Seems we are few and far between these days.

Committee just voted in favor of Condi 16-2.Guess who the two dissenting votes were? Boxer and Kerry :earseek:

I think that is an inaccurate assessment of how it went down:

"Your loyalty to your mission you were given overwhelmed your respect for the truth, and I don't say it lightly," Boxer said.

"I have never, ever lost respect for the truth in service of anything," Rice replied coolly. "It is not my nature, it is not my character. And I would hope that we can have this conversation ... without impugning my credibility or my integrity."

I agree with Es, Condi Rice handled the situation with grace and dignity.

For what it's worth, I am also a registered Independant, have voted for both major parties at times, and even some of the small ones.

I agree with Es, Condi Rice handled the situation with grace and dignity.

...and with far greater respect than she was given.

for those of you who think congress does nothing.... nah, nevermind.

*slowly backs away from this thread*

Barbara Boxer is a hero. If anyone bothered to listen to all 25 minutes of her "discussion" with Rice, they would be aware that she backed up every single statement with documented resources. All Rice could do was claim that "she was offended that her integrity was being attacked". Well, perhaps if she was more than a "yes, woman" to Bush, and she hadn't contridicted herself in statement after statement over the past 4 years , she wouldn't have someone questioning her integrity.

Rice is an educated , intelligent woman who sold out. Thank you Barbara Boxer for having the courage to hold her accountable.

Here is an excerpt from a NYT editorial today that is very accurate. See http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/19/opinion/19wed1.html?oref=login
And she was so much the public face of the drive to war with Iraq that her appearances on Sunday morning talk shows became a running joke.

That history was barely mentioned yesterday, except when Senator Barbara Boxer reminded Ms. Rice of her apocalyptic remarks about nonexistent Iraqi nuclear weapons and suggested that "your loyalty to the mission you were given, to sell this war, overwhelmed your respect for the truth."

Ms. Rice said repeatedly that she intended to engage in "public diplomacy." We hope that doesn't mean trying to sell flawed American foreign policy to reluctant governments abroad. Colin Powell couldn't manage that, and he is a more adept pitchman than Ms. Rice. What the country needs is not better spin, but a secretary of state who can recognize what has gone wrong and use her access to the president to help steer a more rational course.

Some of Ms. Rice's early moves were good. She did not choose as her deputy John Bolton, the under secretary whose confrontational approach thwarted a negotiated end to the Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs. Instead, her deputy will be Robert Zoellick, who has a long record in the diplomacy of trade.

But yesterday's hearing did not provide more cause for optimism.
Bush and Condi sold the American public a false story about WMDs in Iraq. Now that it has been estabished that there are no WMDs in Iraq, Condi has a new set of lies to sell. All Condi is going to do is further isolate the US from the rest of the world.

I totally agree with both of these quotes. I think Condi Rice is one smart, classy lady.

The New York Times, along with their wholly owned subsidiary, The Boston Globe, are hardly the place to go for NON-partisan reporting.

And Editorials are just that; the opinion and interpretation of the editors. They are, by definition NOT reported facts. For facts, you'd do better to look anywhere but an editorial page.
