Selling old contract and buying new ???'s

I think I know the answer to this question, but I figure I would ask the experts in case I am overlooking something.

I am considering buying a new contract and selling an old contract (I have 3 separate contracts and member numbers...all were resales). If I buy a new contract from Disney, is there any way to sell one of my old contracts back to them (kind of a swap)? I am thinking my only option is to sell on the resale market and my purchase of a new contract through Disney would be a separate deal. Am I wrong?

You can sell back to them if you want, but it is of no real monetary benefit to you to do that. They will pay very minimal prices for that. Instead, you should sell on the resale market, and even though Disney might buy it back there for more than they would have directly from you, you will still get more return.

Do you know roughly what the cost is to sell them on the open market? Do the resellers charge a percentage of the purchase price?

I have no firsthand knowledge of what they would buy back at, but I do know it is minimal. Resellers will usually get a percentage, and I think it is around 10%. You also need to know the price that is likely to pass ROFR from Disney. Of course, the less you sell it for, the more likely Disney is to excersise ROFR, and then you get your money from them.

There were some reports that Disney bought back some contracts directly and the price was $55-58 a point. Don't know if these were first hand reports or only urban myth.

We've had a few reports here of Disney offering $50-$55 per point for BCV. According to someone who asked about selling back their contract, Disney is only interested in buying back certain resorts, I assume those where they have a waiting list for add-ons and can make a quick sale (buy at $55, sell at $104).

As noted, if they buy it back it's FAR lower than regular resale. As a rule, you'll lose around $20-25 a point (depending on specifics) if you sold resale and bought back retail though you might gain a better home resort and/or longer length of ownership. You might cut those costs somewhat if you sold then bought resale. IMO, the benefits just aren't there to do it for UY or accounting/ease of use reasons. I'd only do it if you were thinking of downsizing a fair amount anyway. And there are benefits to having different UY and the major benefit of having them all in one (accumulated banking %) has been removed with the change in banking rules.

I think it's better to simply take those extra dollars and add on at a destination resort and then rent out the extra points if need be.

I have a 100 pt WLV contract. Out of all of our DVC stays, which has been dozens, we have stayed there once. Only once. It is somewhat meaningless for us as far as being able to book 11 mos in advance. We are very interested in KT points...we have a very young DS and want to take advantage of the great location there. I am a little worried that we may not be able to book KT with WL or other points...meaning, I think we will buy KT when/if it becomes available. In a few years, we will not be able to take DS out of school and it will be spring break or summer for us, period. It worries me that we won't be able to book 7 months out at KT for those peak times.

After the advice here, I am thinking we will just hang onto our WLV contract though. Our 2nd favorite resort is OKW and we have had few worries getting into OKW (even though our other resorts that we own at are BWV). After all, 100 points is 100 points, at this point, free and clear for us, other than dues. We will probably just bite the bullet and add on at KT in addition to what we have...

From what I have heard, KT points will be pretty expensive. VWL is only a boat ride away from the MK. Not worth the extra money for us.

We sold 100 VB points recently after adding on at SSR. One reason was to lower the dues as VB has the highest dues. Plus we picked up addition points to use through the incentives that were being offered and about 15 years or more on the newer end date. Got $69 per point which was more than we paid back in 1999 so it was a win win for us.

We used The TImeshare Store and were very happy with the results.

I'm correct in that we can sell add ons separately? So if we have a small add on and later want to get rid of that, but keep the larger contract that is OK? They are all under the same member number and the add on contracts are spread out between BCV and VWL. I got concerned after I read something on another thread.

Yes you can sell add-ons separately. You can even sell the master and keep the add-ons. They were purchased separately and you can sell them separately.

We were going to buy at AK and wanted to sell a small BCV contact. I asked our guide if they could just take it off our hands. She said they do not normally do that. I left it at that. We did not buy the AK and added another 100 to BCV which we bought resale.

But KT will cost a lot more, and the point structure most likely will be a lot higher than VWL...

Plus, we don't know the dues cost at this point. I guess since "points are points", I'd probably stick with what you have and try to book at 7 months once in awhile. Or maybe buy a small KT add-on should it come to pass.

When AKV went up for sale, I sold off one of my VWL contracts through resale and bought into AKV. Wanted to have an 11 month advantage at a resort that had GV's, plus we loved both of these resorts. I resold the VWL contract for $2 more per point than I had paid for it 2 years previously.
