Hi All...
Is it possible to sell a vacation? In other words, we are getting a bit overwhelmed with the economic downturn and we have a vacation basically paid for:

rented points for reservation

Is there a forum where I can advertise this?

Sorry about your situation, but you are in a pickle. The room reservation isn't yours to sell if you rented a reservation from a DVC member. You are now within the 30 day period where these points become holding points for the member. So no cancellations or changes would be possible. Holding means the member can only use them to make reservations 60 days out and they expire at the end of their use year. Only the member can advertise the reservation to resell it. Member Services will not talk to you about the reservation to change names on it.

If your tickets have never been used, you might be able to sell them on ebay.

Contact the member you bought the reservation from and see if they will post it on the Rent/Trade board to see if someone else might buy it. For this short notice, it might have to be sold at a loss, but you wouldn't be out the entire amount.

Hope everything turns out for you.

Yes, but if I was able to "sell" the whole thing, all the member would need to do is change the name on the ressie, correct?

Yes, the DVC owner could change the name.

But remember, the owner is under no obligation to do so. The rental agreement is between you and the owner, not party X and the owner. If the owner will work with you, great. If not, then you are simply out of luck.

I'm sorry you are not financially able to travel right now. I'm sure many others are in the same situation. This is one of the drawbacks of renting points vs a refundable cash reservaton through Disney.

Step one is to contact the member who owns the reservation and see if they will allow you to re-rent it. The member owns the reservation and is responsible for any damage done to the room so they may not be comfortable letting you re-rent the reservation to a third party. Did the member have you sign a contract when you set up the rental? If so, take a look at the contract and see if it says anything about cancellations or re-renting the reservation.

Since only the member can change the name on the reservation, you cannot re-rent it without their prior approval and cooperation. I hope things work out for you.

I don't see why you couldn't sell the vacation. I think finding a family to take it might be difficult because you only have a month to market and sell it.

I think your first step is to contact the person you rented the points from and see if they are willing to substitute the names for you. They might not want to do it and if that is the case I think your going to be in trouble. But it does not hurt to ask. You might give them some money for their trouble.

If your tickets have not been used I don't see why you couldn't sell it as a whole package here on the rent/trade boards. I have rented points before with tickets. In fact, I rented the points and split them with a friend and his family. Those were the good old days when the points came with tickets. I think you have to expect take some deep discounts though.

I am sorry you are going through some tough times! I wish you the best!

As long as the member you rented thru is willing to assist, there should be no problem trying to re-rent the reservation using the DVC Rent/Trade Board here on the DIS. Sometimes the member is willing to offer the reservation for you and in other cases you will need to find your own renter and then have the member make the name change for you.

However, tickets may not be sold anyplace on the DIS. You have not really purchased a package - you have purchased a reservation at a DVC resort and separately purchased tickets to various events. Had you purchased a package (accommodations with admission media) thru Disney directly, you also would not be able to "sell" the package since you would have no means to change the names on the reservation and might not be able to cancel with a refund based on the date of the reservation. Disney Theme Park admission may be kept and used a future date since they will not expire until 14 days after first use (unless the "no-expire" feature has been purchased).

Hopefully, you can find someone to sub-rent the reservation with the assistance of the member who controls the reservation.

Good luck! :)
