Selfies at character meet and greets

Anyone else hate selfies!

Maybe not hate, but since the OP is a parent and will almost certainly have a camera, and very likely has at least one hand, I don't understand getting such an almost universally unflattering camera angle and proximity by holding it at arm's length, vs having another human take the picture for you.

If it's the only option, then it's the only option, but obviously in the OP's case it's NOT.

And even when walking around the parks, you are surrounded by people who very likely would be happy to take your picture for you! Just no need for the (again, almost universally unflattering camera angle and proximity) arm's length picture.

Oh yeah, I hear you, I don't know why teens think selfies are so wonderful, but posing for a camera that's not in their hand is not cool for this generation. I just figured she would have fun with it.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied, and I loved the pictures!! Can't wait for the magic to begin for us just 6 months.

For me, I think selfies are funner. Phone cameras are so good nowadays that they can be almost as good quality as a regular camera. And while a "real" pic is nice for when you have a nice background or something like that, sometimes the photographer isn't great about zooming in and capturing what you really want. I have tons of beautiful photos from my wedding, but one of my favorite pics is the random selfie I took with my phone at the reception.

There's a comics author, Kelly Sue Deconnick, who exclusively takes duckface selfies with fans at signings as an icebreaker. She says it's hard to feel awkward when you're both being ridiculous! I heard another person say that the selfie is what the autograph used to be for if you ever met a famous person, and I fotally agree. I'd much rather get a quick selfie together than have them sign something. And whenever I meet new internet friends I always want photographic evidence via selfie!

I have a terrific photo of my dd (21 I might add!!!) taking a selfie of herself and her friend with Gaston!!! I had Memory Maker, I had my own camera...still not sure why they took a selfie.

The vast majority of selfies are not very attractive. No way do I want any of myself out there for the world to see. But, young people seem to feel differently.

I've done it. Stormtrooper Donald requested I take one of him last year, in fact. Of course, I forgot to duckface...what a fail! :crazy2:

(I'm 34 btw, not 11. :rotfl:)

As someone who generally hates the duck face, I support your statement. Duck face would have been awesome!

I am so glad that I am not the only one!! WHY would you take a selfie when there are not just one but TWO available CMs that can happily take the picture for you! SMH... :rolleyes2

In all honesty, I'm not a selfie fan. I don't take them as a general rule, and I've maybe posted 1 to social media ever. And I'm with most adults in saying I would rather the PhotoPass photographer take my character photo. But speaking for my 19 and 16 y/o's, selfies are standard, and selfies with famous people (or characters, in this case) are status symbols. To that age group, it's all about how many "likes" and reposts one can get on social media. So, if snapping their own photos and sharing with their friends enhances their enjoyment of Disney, I'm thrilled that the characters and CMs are so accommodating and enthusiastic. OP, I hope your DD gets every selfie op she wants! Enjoy your vacation!

Give me a break. I'm not a selfie taker, but my dd loves the usie. It is fun and hurts nobody. No reason to be SYH, move along and grab a dole whip or whatever it is that would help you chill out a little. :thumbsup2

I look better in selfies. I have ginormous boobs and they are the focus of EVERY picture I'm in. In selfies my face is the focus.

Exactly. This website amazes me sometimes.

You guys? Selfies are a fun way for the youngins to express themselves! Nothing wrong with a completely different style of picture taking! My teenagers LOVE teaching their grandparents about selfies! It's fun!

You don't need to tell me twice, Jackie, I'm as pro-selfie as they come :smooth:

My sister was a fan of taking selfies with the characters on our trip. No issues with anyone. Daisy Duck was particularly cooperative and in fact insisted my sister take several more than she was anticipating. Goofy was not super cooperative and kept like zooming in to the camera with his nose so all of the selfies taken with him consist of a giant Goofy nose and like a small sliver of my sisters face lol.

EDIT: on the selfie debate, I am neither pro, nor anti-selfie. It's just another way to take a picture. :) I should also add that neither my sister or I are particularly young (we are both 30)

Of course, if people are anti-selfie, that is not an issue for me at all, but sometimes it just helps if we try to be understanding to others who like them. :flower1:

My DD loves taking selfies. She tends to make a face or ham it up more than when mom (or anyone else) is taking a picture. It's less formal and more fun for her.

I don't take selfies very often, but they would offer a different perspective for character photos! I say have fun and go for it!! Especially when the characters are asking you to take 'shellfies' and 'snowfies'!! How can you say no to that? I just love Disney!!!

We took selfies with a big ol' camera back in the day. It was the only way to take pictures when nobody else was around and you wanted a picture of BOTH of you.
Now, it's the cool thing to do. I tell my kids, "You're welcome for the selfie movement. I started that crap."

Oh my gosh, watching my 11 year old teach her 72 year old anti-technology grandmother how to take a selfie was pretty much one of the funniest moments of my life. It was so great.

Selfies are the photo booths of today. Not about the composition, about the moment and the feelings.

My friend got a selfie with her DD, DH, Mickey, and Minnie at Aulani (I know, her DH has freakishly long arms LOL). It's a great pic.

Anyone else hate selfies!

I have to laugh. I am 53 and my goal this year is to let my grand kids (yes, I have two - 17 and 8) know what they didn't have in their lifetimes.

The first thing on the list is how we used to have to take these cameras with attachable lenses, take pictures and then come home and take the film to a store to have it developed and then wait for that film to come back so we could see if the picture was actually something we wanted. If it wasn't, we had to throw it away. Or - worse - it wasn't exposed correctly!

So, while I've never taken a selfie, what's the harm?
