Selfie sticks

I'm with you. Us getting one had nothing to do with selfishness and I've not once used it to photograph myself alone. We use it to get photos of all 7 of us together, because otherwise, I won't be in the photo.
If we were in a crowded area, I would refrain from the stick and just ask someone to take our photo, but if we're where there is plenty of space, I'll proudly bring out the "selfie" stick that I'll re-term "family wand" and get a photo of all my people. Hopefully, few people will judge me as self-absorbed for doing so.
Based on this thread it sounds like is a fellow Disney cruiser who sees a selfie stick (even if you're nowhere near them and not in a crowded area) they'll get out the pitch forks or perhaps it's tar and feathers. It baffles me why anyone would care so much how other people choose to take their photos but there ya have it.

I don't care how anyone takes their pictures.

I do care when someone decides to extend a pole across my path that everyone is walking down (either causing injuries or otherwise impeding others who want to walk that way). And waving them about trying for that "perfect angle" can be hazardous (to others), because the "photographer" is only paying attention to their group and/or where they've got the camera positioned.

I, also, will not be bringing out the "pitchforks or tar and feathers" just because someone has done so. But I will most likely be sure that they are aware that their actions have been a problem.

OK ...well neither you or any other anti-selfie stick poster on this thread bothered to differentiate between selfie stick users who are responsible and don't bother anyone and selfie stick users who injure people.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of "people", if one responsible person is allowed, then others who are not so responsible will also do it. So, attitudes tend to address the lowest common denominator, not the ones who think things through.

I don't think it's our responsibility to pat the backs of some in a group in relation to the visible jerks that wave the things around. I can think of a *lot* of things out there that may be used by people without poor intent, but their indirect affiliation with the ones who are a problem means that they are painted with the same brush, like it or not.

Weird...because some of these comments make it seem as though selfie stick are banned when in fact they are not. No one is asking for a pat on the back. It would simply be nice if some people were respectful of other people and be respectful of the rules that do not restrict the use of selfie sticks whether some people agree with DCL and their decision not to ban them. I guess if you don't like DCLs rules or lack of bans on selfie sticks you can always find a cruise line that does ban selfie sticks and cruise with them.

Actually according to DCLs policies...all people are permitted to use selfie sticks

Yes, I know. This thread was started by someone asking if they are banned. Leading to opinions as to whether they should be or not. I was just participating in the conversation.

Slight correction. OP asked if they were allowed and then her thread was hijacked by a number of poster offering their unsolicited opinions on the perceived selfishness of people who use selfie sticks

I could not have said it better.

That's the DIS Boards for you - you asked about bringing a selfie stick and get called selfish; you express disappointment with the changed alcohol policy and you get called an alcoholic....... It can definitely make you think twice about posting your opinion or asking a question.

If you ask a question on a message board responses are not "unsolicited opinions". Otherwise a simple" no they are not banned" or a quick google search would have sufficed and a "thank you" response. I think she has her answer now and how others may feel differently about using them...3 pages later.

Have not read this thread all the way through but get the gist of people hating selfie sticks (which I hate myself). But my Mom saw a cheap one this weekend and picked it up for me since I am going solo on my next cruise. So immediately I search to see if still allowed on DCL since I LOVE the ban in parks. I told her I usually just grab the closest person and ask them to take a picture. which works 99% of the time. But as I thought about it more, I thought of the mornings I get up before the sunrise to see it and the nights I roam the upper decks to see the ship (and sometimes shore) lights. Often I am the only one on deck. So I am glad to have it. But I certainly hope to use it responsibly. But as I work in a tourist industry and see people acting like "tourists" everyday I recognize (usually too late) while I am on vacay I too act like a tourist.

So I will only allow myself to break out the stick between 11pm and 6am. Unless they ban them before my cruise. In which case no worries.

It does help from having people that don't offer the courtesy of waiting when someone is taking a photo. The stick is like a waiting rope, as many don't have consideration for the space between camera and subject. The barrier stops you for only a few seconds. Go around, or stop. I don't want you in the photos, so it's a win win.

No selfie stick user ever thinks they are being irresponsible. :)

Asking others to take a picture of you is so easy and simple. And gives such nice photos.

If I have a camera out while walking outside during the sunrise or sunset, it's not ME that is having its picture taken. Say cheese, nature! Nature doesn't need my face in its pic.

Of all the many people that bumped into me and/or invaded my personal space bubble on my 2 cruises on the Magic this month (including one oblivious man who insisted on moving his sweaty body into my overly warm body's place in the lifeboat drill line - pretty much the only hot sun we got all trip was during that drill!), not one of them was using a selfie stick or even taking a picture. I did not notice one single person using a selfie stick on either cruise. We actually brought ours and forgot to use it at all, which irritated me as I would have liked more pictures of the whole family.

I was walking along the shoreline at Castaway Cay while holding my son's phone, which he had brought to take pictures, and I didn't feel safe leaving on the beach chair, and I walked into the water to go around a guy who had planted his chair right at the water line, and then his kid knocked the phone right out of my hand into the water. (Neither she nor her father apologized.) If you all can think of a way to ban that kind of incident, I'll jump on the bandwagon.

The point is, this kind of stuff happens when you are on a ship with 2000+ people whether or not selfie sticks are involved. No one is suggesting banning huge shoulderbags, awkward children, or other personal bubble invaders - so why pick on selfie sticks which are a fun and useful tool? Beyond general crowd control issues, I just don't see the problem others are complaining about here. Maybe some folks need to charter their own private ship to avoid having other people around at all. It's kind of ironic to call other people selfish in this context!
